Rock of Ages (2012)
A small town girl and a city boy meet on the Sunset Strip, while pursuing their Hollywood dreams.
Director:Adam Shankman |

The Buzz: Given the undying affinity for 80s pop metal, the film adaptation of the hit Broadway play should have no trouble courting all ages crowds worldwide, resulting in Adam Shankman's biggest hit to date and perhaps kicking off a musical renaissance greater than last decade's run from Chicago to Nine. (Note: Tom Hooper follows up The King's Speech with his take on Les Misérables this December.) My only question: Will Tom Cruise allow Stacee Jaxx to have such a disgraceful exit as he has in the play? Shankman's openness and wit makes for a great read and has leeched away our early cynicism for the project. That fact that Russell Brand looks like Joan Jett in the marketing materials has also helped.
That's My Boy (2012)
While in his teens, Donny fathered a son, Todd, and raised him as a single parent up until Todd's 18th birthday. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Todd's world comes crashing down when Donny resurfaces just before Todd's wedding.

The Buzz: Adam Sandler enters his third decade of making movies and his audience loves him in Dad mode, so his only on-screen appearance of 2012 should be a hit, even without his go-to director Dennis Dugan behind the camera (Hot Tub Time Machine duo Sean Anders and John Morris were called up to handle this father-son yelling match). Even if Leighton Meester would never be with a guy like Andy Samberg in real life, if she's unleashed, wouldn't she deliver the best one-liners here?
The Woman in the Fifth (2011)
A college lecturer flees to Paris after a scandal costs him his job. In the City of Lights, he meets a widow who might be involved in a series of murders.
Director:Pawel Pawlikowski |

The Buzz: For most of its run time, The Woman in the Fifth positions itself as a top-tier thriller with serious potential beyond the art house. Resolutely oddball and a definite head-scratcher, if you don't need your mysteries to add up at the end, you should be pleased. And Ethan Hawke's performance is quite good.
Your Sister's Sister (2011) - [limited]
Iris invites her friend Jack to stay at her family's island getaway after the death of his brother. At their remote cabin, Jack's drunken encounter with Hannah, Iris' sister, kicks off a revealing stretch of days.
Director:Lynn Shelton |

The Buzz: Lynn Shelton eases away from Mumblecore trappings with her follow-up to Humpday, which shapes the subgenre's hallmarks -- collaborative character development, improvisation, scaled-back crews -- into a story that doesn't feel so teeny, tiny, whisper, quiet. I love Emily Blunt in non-studio mode, and Rosemarie DeWitt won my attention with Rachel Getting Married. On the guy side, Mark Duplass doesn't look like a typical male lead, and the wicked funny Mike Birbiglia turns in a great supporting role early on.
Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap (2012) - [limited]
A documentary on rap music and its rise to global prominence.

The Buzz: At Sundance earlier this year, I went into Ice-T's documentary on a nostalgia high from seeing Beats Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest back in 2011. Something from Nothing is macro in comparison, tackling the entirety of hip-hop music and pulling up short as a result of its ambition. Also, the interviews are pretty much for fans only. Still, with Afrika Bambaataa, Melle Mel, and other luminaries on the big-screen, there's no reason to slight Ice-T or his nearly exhaustive chronicle.
