    Mistrial may be declared in Bobby Ferguson bid-rigging case

    U.S. District Judge David Lawson indicated in court today that he will declare a mistrial in the Bobby Ferguson bid-rigging case. The jury has not yet signed verdict forms reaching that conclusion, but Lawson gave them the opportunity to do so, meaning they will no longer be deliberating in the case.

    A man accused of stabbing several men in the Flint area two years ago was sentenced Monday to life in prison for one of the murders. Elias Abuelazam was found guilty last month after a three-week jury trial of killing 49-year-old Arnold Minor on Aug. 2, 2010.

    For the second time in five months, Bob Bashara has been accused of trying to hire a hit man. He was first suspected of hiring Joe Gentz to strangle his wife, Jane Bashara, in January. Now, Bob Bashara is accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill Gentz in jail, a source familiar with the investigation told the Free Press. Bashara's attorney said he's bewildered by the accusation.

    Detroit to lay off 164 firefighters, Bing says

    The layoffs could be temporary, as the city hopes to secure a federal grant that would restore the jobs of 108 of those firefighters. Still, there is no guarantee the city will be awarded the grant, Commissioner Don Austin said during budget talks this spring.
