    Congress votes to stop student loan interest rates from doubling

    Congress had to act by Sunday to keep the interest rates on any new federal-subsidized Stafford loans granted after July 1 from doubling from 3.4% to 6.8%. Projections were that the average student would have had to pay $1,000 more a year.

    Police: Bob Bashara paid man $2,000 to find hit man for Joseph Gentz

    Bob Bashara was growing increasingly anxious, prosecutors say. The key witness against him had a court date looming and, at some point, could possibly testify that Bashara hired him to kill his wife in January. So the Grosse Pointe Park businessman went looking for a new hit man, prosecutors allege.

    Bob Bashara arraigned on charge of solicitation to murder

    During about a two-week period this month, Bob Bashara solicited someone and paid this person to have Gentz, who has been charged in Jane Bashara's death, killed in the jail before a July court hearing, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced today. Bashara's bond was set at $15 million cash or surety. His preliminary examination is set for July 24.

    For the second time in five months, Bob Bashara has been accused of trying to hire a hit man. He was first suspected of hiring Joe Gentz to strangle his wife, Jane Bashara, in January. Now, Bob Bashara is accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill Gentz in jail, a source familiar with the investigation told the Free Press. Bashara's attorney said he's bewildered by the accusation.

    For years, the inside of the log cabin in Detroit's Palmer Park was seen only by raccoons and other critters that invaded the home dating back more than 125 years. Those tenants were evicted, and the doors of the cabin were opened for a rare showing Sunday, marking the first time since 2001 that the public has been allowed in, officials said.

    Wayne County's troubled pension plan got more bad news Thursday when an audit analysis showed it lost an additional $113 million last year.
