Certificate PG-13   -   Action | Adventure | Crime | Thriller

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham's finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Bane, one of the most empathy earning villains in comic book lore, is the ideal final opponent for Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy; Tom Hardy's portrayal of the Venom-addicted backbreaker should rank up there with The Joker, Hannibal Lecter, Anton Chigurh ... Comics types should be able to piece together the main parts of the narrative given the connection between Bane and Ra's Al Ghul, though how Catwoman fits in remains a mystery.

Certificate PG   -   Documentary

Metascore: 80/100 (7 reviews)
A documentary that follows a billionaire couple as they begin construction on a mansion inspired by Versailles. During the next two years, their empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters due to the economic crisis.

The Buzz: Controversial even before its Sundance debut (subject David Siegel sued the festival for their use of the phrase "rags to riches to rags" to describe their fortune losses), Lauren Greenfield's documentary captivated the Park City crowd and took home the directing award in its category. Magnolia Pictures has had a few major documentary successes -- Food, Inc., Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, and most recently Jiro Dreams of Sushi -- so this insider look at the 1% should have no trouble reaching its audiences and stirring their respective pots. But the true reason Greenfield has earned accolades for her work here is for her humanism.

On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. Documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: LCD Soundsystem leader James Murphy has always come across like a fantastic man on record and in interviews, so imagine how crush-worthy he is as he reflects on his music career to date as LCDSS's final show approaches. Exuding the kind of cool that comes from humble self-consciousness, Murphy's answers to writer Chuck Klosterman`s guiding questions touch on his love of art and community as he illuminates some of the feelings behind his decision to end LCD at a creative zenith. The footage from the Madison Square Garden show is emotional, and you will probably tear up for the 1,000th time during a live rendition of "All My Friends".

In occupied France, Lebrac leads a play war between two rival kid gangs, but his feelings for Violette, a Jewish girl in danger of being discovered by the Nazis, encourage Lebrac to face the reality of what's happening around him.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Harvey Weinstein said he has no plans to wage an Oscar campaign for the new film The Chorus director Christophe Barratier, who co-wrote the script with The Artist's Thomas Langmann. But the trailer and all attendant promotional materials reference both movies in all caps, reinforcing the war drama's kid-powered sentimentality. If the Best Foreign Language category ever were to reflect popular opinion ...

  -   Drama | Romance

In pre-World War II France, a father is torn between his sense of honor and his deep love for his saintly daughter when she gets in trouble with the wealthy son of a shopkeeper.
Director:

The Buzz: Cuddly French actor Daniel Auteuil makes his directorial debut with an apparently sexless and airy drama that might be a letdown for people who are accustomed to his performances in movies such as La séparation, Caché (Hidden), or Un Coeur en Hiver.

Certificate R Comedy | Sci-Fi

Suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Sight unseen, this emits a vibe that's one part Adam Sandler buddy comedy and one part Paul. Or E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial starring adult males. Also getting a hipster-cheap feeling since the studio installed Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) in the director's chair. Could be another underperforming ensemble comedy for Ben Stiller.

Certificate PG-13 Drama | Music | Romance

Emily arrives in Miami with aspirations to become a professional dancer. She sparks with Sean, the leader of a dance crew whose neighborhood is threatened by Emily's father's development plans.
Director:

The Buzz: As long as overseas audiences keep buying tickets and there are former "So You Think You Can Dance" contestants to poach, we will always be treated to the Step Up movies, which fetishize poverty and feature undeniably rad choreography.

Certificate R Comedy | Fantasy | Romance

A novelist struggling with writer's block finds romance in a most unusual way: by creating a female character he thinks will love him, then willing her into existence.
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: We've seen so many indie-minded filmmaking duos come and (sort-of) go that I was getting a bit neurotic about the absence of Little Miss Sunshine directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton; not to be rude, but look what happened to Jared + Jerusha Hess after Napoleon Dynamite, or Robert Pulcini + Shari Springer Berman after American Splendor. The other thing worth noting here is the presence of Zoe Kazan in front of the camera in the titular role, and behind the scenes as the screenwriter of this romantic comedy that sounds like a classic Fox Searchlight formula, and I mean that in a good way. And lest we forget that Kazan and Paul Dano have been hitched before, albeit in a tenuous way in Meek's Cutoff.

Certificate NC-17   -   Comedy | Crime | Thriller

When a debt puts a young man's life in danger, he turns to putting a hit out on his evil mother in order to collect the insurance.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: Matthew McConaughey, suddenly one of every critic's favorite actors, has earned serious raves for his work in the latest film from William Friedkin, a reportedly bleak and hyperviolent thriller that has earned an NC-17 rating (apparently the end sequence is extreme). We expect the film will open to huge numbers in an limited release -- a la Bernie, McConaughey's recent collaboration with Richard Linklater -- with word-of-mouth and talk of award nominations keeping it in theaters for most of the summer. After several recent indie attempts, Juno Temple, referred to as a "retainer" in the trailer, might finally have a hit on her hands.

Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock 'n' roller, Rodriguez.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: One great thing about the LCD Soundsystem documentary Shut Up and Play the Hits is the presence of essayist and all-culture champion Chuck Klosterman, who gently guides frontman James Murphy through a series of memories and experiences as his next step in life remains unknown. If director Malik Bendjelloul had maintained the same level of intimacy and respect for his childhood musical hero, Sixto Rodriguez, who disappeared from the singer-songwriter scene after releasing a few critically acclaimed records, his documentary would be the equivalent of a platinum record. As it stands, with its invasive approach to an otherwise captivating story of a musician's life and a man's choices, it's gold-certified by us.

Certificate R   -   Documentary

A documentary that chronicles artist and activist Ai Weiwei as he prepares for a series of exhibitions and gets into an increasing number of clashes with the Chinese government.
Director:
Watch Trailer

The Buzz: With the recent announcement that Ai Weiwei would no longer be held under house arrest by the Chinese government, those of us following his case took a slight breath of relief. The artist/activist still cannot leave the country and other fateful decisions have yet to be made, there's a flash of good news as the documentary (shot before his major dust-up with the government) is set for general release. Unfamiliar with his saga? Here's a good background article.

In order to prove his fatherhood potential to his pregnant girlfriend, Frank 'kidnaps' her 12-year-old nephew and tags along on his best friend Casper's debauched weekend canoe trip.
Director:

The Buzz: Drafthouse Films, the movie-distribution offshoot of the treasured Austin, Texas-based cinema chain, is behind this Danish comedy. Their films tend to arrive on a wave of hype (see: Four Lions) though they haven't yet landed a bonafide indie hit. Indie critics have responded enthusiastically to the movie's deadpan comedy and episodic structure, but we'll see if it connects with general audiences.
