This All-Star thing is supposed to be fun for everybody, right? Well, commissioner Bud Selig and union head Michael Weiner weren't thrilled at the way the good people of Kansas City booed designated villain Robinson Cano at Monday's All-Star Home Run Derby. And they booed him again Tuesday during the pregame player introductions.
The National League jumped on Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander for five first-inning runs and romped for its third straight win. Pablo Sandoval's two-out, three-run triple was the big blow in the first.
Justin Verlander, who dreams of hitting a home run, achieved an unprecedented grand slam Tuesday night. The Tigers right-hander became the first man to do all four of these things: win the Rookie of the Year Award, win the Cy Young Award, win the MVP and start the All-Star Game.
Welcome to our two-minute drill, which will give you a snapshot of what's going on with the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Spartans and Wolverines each day.
The San Francisco Giants were well represented in the starting lineup of Tuesday's All-Star Game, which didn't sit right with some baseball fans. At the very least, after leading the National League to an 8-0 rout of the American League, the four San Francisco starters dissolved much of the argument.
Freshmen Justin Alleman (Holt) and Cam Gibson (Grosse Pointe South), who were selected in the Major League Baseball draft in June, have elected to enroll at Michigan State.
Some special teenage athletes who aren't wasting youth on the young this summer:
A year after skipping the All-Star Game, Derek Jeter returned to his midsummer classic form Tuesday. After going 1-for-2, Jeter moved into fourth all-time with a .458 average among players with a minimum of 12 plate appearances. Jeter passed Joe Carter, Al Simmons and David Wright in continuing to hit some of baseball's best pitchers.
Verlander, 29, who will be the starting pitcher for the American League at tonight’s Major League All Star Game, and Upton, 20, who was born in St. Joseph but spent the majority of her childhood in Florida, haven’t commented publicly on the topic.
Tigers ace Justin Verlander was torched for five runs in the first inning as the National League beat the American League, 8-0, in the All-Star Game tonight in Kansas City.
Good thing it wasn't a Tigers game. Justin Verlander gave up four hits and five runs in the first inning. Pablo Sandoval's bases-loaded triple was the big blow. The NL won the game, 8-0.
American League starting pitcher Justin Verlander got extra All-Star Game face time Monday night. He was one of the players who delivered David Letterman's Top 10 list of "Fun Facts About the All-Star Game" on CBS. Verlander gave No. 10: "This year, they've added an extra base." Hey, don't give Bud Selig any bright ideas.
Prince Fielder swings like a man who hates baseballs. He clubs them, really, and watching him in Monday's Home Run Derby created a chorus of oooohs as people waited to see in what faraway spot one of his blasts would land.
Look everyone, it's half-naked athletes! Check that, it's fully-naked athletes tastefully shot and strategically covered.
The cards are from an extremely rare series issued around 1910. The few known to exist are in so-so condition at best, with faded images and worn edges. But the ones from the attic in the Ohio town of Defiance are nearly pristine, untouched for more than a century.
Players’ union head Michael Weiner said today that, in most instances, the rivalry games will be cut from six to either four or three. The new format was caused by next year’s move of the Houston Astros to the American League.
Welcome to our two-minute drill, which will give you a snapshot of what's going on with the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Spartans and Wolverines each day.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Dickey's profound autobiography, “Wherever I Wind Up,” deals almost entirely with his own experiences: learning the knuckleball, making peace with his demons, finally establishing himself in the majors with the Mets. He offers little comment on the many tremendous players he has seen in his long career. But deep in the final chapter, Dickey makes an exception....
Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander has shown that he can overwhelm hitters who have faced him dozens of times. What about hitters who have never batted against him? What are they in for -- even if each is an All-Star?
Miguel Cabrera has started every Tigers game this season, but he's not starting the All-Star Game tonight because he lost in the fan voting to Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre.
Dan Uggla faced Justin Verlander in spring training, which is kind of like saying you debated Barack Obama in high school. It's a story, sure, but it's nothing like the real deal. Uggla, Atlanta's All-Star second baseman, acknowledges as much. Still, he can't help himself.
Texas Rangers catcher Mike Napoli's first meeting with Justin Verlander was memorable. He hopes his next one -- catching him in tonight's All-Star Game -- will be educational.
To land a financially manageable position player like Upton, another dynamic bat who could easily be one of the best players in baseball, giving up top prospects is a necessary evil the Tigers shouldn’t have a problem accepting.
Here's how the Tigers stand at the All-Star break now and how they fared before and after it last season:
What else is there to watch? The All-Star Game, if only to see if the Tigers are going to get home field advantage in the World Series. (Remember, it paid off for the St. Louis Cardinals last year.) Oh, and the Tigers' Big Three are participating: Justin Verlander and Prince Fielder are starting, and Miguel Cabrera is a reserve. 8 p.m., Fox (broadcast starts at 7:30).
American League manager Ron Washington just released his starting lineup for Tuesday night's MLB All-Star Game.
"I get to watch him a ton," Cain said. "I’m just amazed at how he pitches and the way he goes about his business. He can start off a game from 90 to 93 (m.p.h.) and work his way around a lineup. Then when he gets in a big jam or needs to, he gears back and starts dialing it up to 95 or 98."
Five wins in a row. Now, this is getting interesting for the Tigers. The big boys are smashing home runs. The pitchers are getting healthy and throwing strikes. The role players are rolling. And best of all, nobody got hurt. "This is more what we are supposed to be like," manager Jim Leyland said Sunday after the Tigers beat Kansas City.
Delmon Young is hitting strikes. This is a good thing because it's easier than hitting balls. This helps explain the designated hitter's recent power surge -- his solo home run Sunday against Kansas City gave Young four consecutive games with a homer. This also helps explain Young's .271 batting average -- the highest it has been since early April.
Detroit Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder won his second MLB All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday night in Kansas City, swatting 12 home runs in the finals to beat Toronto’s Jose Bautista.
Max Scherzer struck out seven Sunday in a 7-1 win over Kansas City. That gave Scherzer and Justin Verlander a combined 249 strikeouts for the season, the most by two Tigers pitchers before the All-Star break since Joe Coleman and Mickey Lolich had 295 in 1972.
Jim Leyland flew home to Pittsburgh after the game Sunday, and he was relieved that the Tigers won. Because his wife won't be busting his chops about losing. "My wife won't be gripping at me too bad when I get home," Leyland said. "That's one good thing. She won't be on my fanny about losing."
Is it a good thing to win tonight? Here's how the last five Home Run Derby champs fared in season's second half: 2011 -- Robinson Cano Hit .309 with 13 homers and 61 RBIs as the Yankee won the AL Silver Slugger for second base. 2010 -- David Ortiz
Welcome to our two-minute drill, which will give you a snapshot of what's going on with the Lions, Tigers, Red Wings, Pistons, Spartans and Wolverines each day.
The Tigers kept their recent offensive surge going with three homers and 12 hits to win their season-high fifth straight game Sunday.
Miguel Cabrera doesn't care how many home runs Prince Fielder hits in the Home Run Derby tonight in Kansas City, Mo. Cabrera cares more about what Fielder does in the second half of the season. "I think he's gonna hit 20 home runs," Cabrera said.
Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy was selected Sunday to replace Los Angeles Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson on the American League roster for Tuesday night's All-Star Game.
