Ang Lee's 3-D 'Life of Pi' will Open NYFF

36 minutes ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Ang Lee's "The Life of Pi" will open the upcoming 50th New York Film Festival (September 28 – October 14), the first 3-D film to do so. (Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" played as a 3-D work-in-progress last year.) Lee also screened Cannes entry "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" 12 years ago to close the fest, and opened it with "The Ice Storm" in 1997. Thus Lee joins master auteurs Robert Altman, Pedro Almodóvar and François Truffaut as the only directors to have opened the fest more than once. Lee wowed exhibitors with footage from the film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April, as distributor Twentieth Century Fox made it clear that they had high holiday and awards expectations for the film. Lee also participated in a rousing conversation with Martin Scorsese about how to shoot in 3-D. In 2009, the Film Society of Lincoln Center conducted a complete retrospective of Lee's work at the Walter Reade. »

The Spice Girls Crush at the Closing Ceremonies

5 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Musically, there was plenty to puzzle over at last night's closing ceremonies, which were billed as a "Symphony of British Music" and executed as a who's who of the artists that U.K. record executives refuse to give up on. (Still somehow looking at you, Jessie J.) But the night's most anticipated event — unless you somehow knew about the Fatboy Slim neon octopus — went off without a hitch, because real talk: The Spice Girls nailed their reunion segment. They looked fantastic! They sounded as good as they even did twelve years ago — and they managed it while speeding around the arena on giant taxis. They actually had energy, unlike certain Gallagher brothers who sang very dour renditions of "Wonderwall" as the karaoke enthusiasts of the world looked on, horrified. We have no idea whether they can sustain this level of performance for longer than five minutes, but for »

The Danger of Genre Creep: Six Films That Hollywood Might Want to Rethink

52 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

As a general, Colin Powell often warned his bosses in Washington against “mission creep” — the dangerous expansion of a project beyond its original goal, often after initial success. Here in Hollywood, we have “genre creep,” and recently, we saw yet again just how dangerous it can be with the failure to launch of yet another studio remake, Total Recall. We’re not talking about mere profligacy; certainly there are plenty of films on which spending ever more cash (Titanic comes to mind) yielded an even bigger payoff. Rather, we’re talking about a pernicious and wrong-headed notion that by pouring cash over a mere genre film, something magical will happen. That instead of an un-recoupable, overly expensive lowest-common denominator picture, a magical, Timothy Green–like organism known as “the event movie” will spring from the ground, with dollar bills instead of leaves poking out of its sweat socks. In fact, »
