The Gray Lady Carries A Shiv In Her Purse

NYT: “On Monday afternoon, Romney campaign officials did not respond to a query about whether Mr. Romney believes that the blockade of Gaza or trade restrictions in the West Bank have had any dampening effect on economic activity in those areas.”

Romney Takes ‘You Didn’t Build That’ Global

After building a whole infrastructure to attack President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment, it’s delightfully ironic to see the Romney campaign nudging reporters to write gently about Mitt’s remarks in Israel.

These might sound like two wholly unrelated controversies – one damaging to Obama, one damaging to Romney. But in a real sense they’re outgrowths of the same widely held conservative assumption that financial success is typically a symptom of hard work and a more general virtuosity.

Obama Descended From First Slave?

Ancestry.com is out with a press release and a study this morning claiming that President Obama is descended from what they call the first ‘slave’ in America. “President Barack Obama,” says the press release, “is the 11th great-grandson of John Punch, the first documented African enslaved for life in American history.” And the kicker is, at least as far as this study goes, that it’s through his white mother.

Just Wow

I wrote on Friday that ahead of his visit to Israel, Mitt Romney seemed set to offend Palestinian and wider Arab sensibilities on the delicate issue of Jerusalem, by referring to the city as the country’s capital.

The Olympic Ideal

Flipping through the photos of the 1948 London Olympics, two things stand out. The first is how diverse the U.S. team was for that time. Sure, Jesse Owens was dominating the Berlin Olympics the previous decade. But I didn’t know about Asian-American divers like Vicki Draves and Sammy Lee. I’d forgotten Alice Coachman, the first African-American woman to win gold. Which raises the second point: The women athletes across the board were total badasses.

Okay, yes, that photo of Vicki Draves has a “Mad Men” vibe to it; and the woman who was perhaps the biggest star of the Olympics was nicknamed ”The Flying Housewife.” But check out Fanny Blankers-Koen, “The Flying Housewife,” in action. The nickname seems even more demeaning, no? The Dutch Blankers-Koen won a total of four gold medals in track in the ‘48 Games. And Hungary’s Olga Gyarmati looks vaguely like Lucille Ball, if you gave Lucy ripped quads and sent her soaring over the long jump pit. Check ‘em all out.

The new Digg staff will choose the stories and the order in which they are presented on the page, based on algorithms that take into account… Read More →

Romney Keeps ABC Waiting For Promised Tax Information

Romney Keeps ABC Waiting For Promised Tax Information Despite telling ABC News over the weekend he’d be “happy” to hand over more information on his past tax returns, Mitt Romney has yet to follow up on their request. Romney has steadfastly refused to release any tax returns from earlier than last year despite pressure from both Democrats and Republicans alike to shed more light on his finances. However, he said in an interview on Sunday he’d at least check whether he ever paid a lower rate than the 13.9% from 2010. “I haven’t… Read More →

The move comes after months of pressure from Democratic lawmakers, party officials and outside groups. The movement got a boost in May when President Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage. Read More →

House Dems To Force Vote On Middle-Income Bush Tax Cuts

House Dems To Force Vote On Middle-Income Bush Tax Cuts House Democrats will put Republicans on record this week voting down an extension of the middle-income Bush tax cuts unless the tax cuts that benefit the wealthiest Americans are also extended. On Monday, Ways and Means Committee ranking member Sander Levin (D-MI) will introduce legislation mirroring a bill Senate Democrats passed last week to extend the Bush tax cuts up to a family’s first $250,000 in income. Jonah Lehrer Resigns From The New Yorker After Fabricated Quotes Found In His Book Celebrated science writer Jonah Lehrer has resigned his staff writing position at The New Yorker after quotes in his latest book, “Imagine: How Creativity Works,” were found to be fabricated. The quotes in question were raised by Michael C. Moynihan in an article for Tablet Magazine titled “Jonah Lehrer’s Deceptions.” In the first chapter of “Imagine,” Lehrer quotes Bob Dylan on the creative process: “It’s a hard thing to describe. It’s just this sense that you got something to say.”… Read More →

Public Television Firings In Alabama Met With Protest

Public Television Firings In Alabama Met With Protest The recent firings of two Alabama Public Television executives, ousted over their purported unwillingness to air Christianist historical documentaries, has generated a swelling backlash within the state. Mass resignations from APT’s attendant committees followed the firings of former Executive Director Allan Pizzato and Deputy Director Pauline Howland, and last week a pair of petitions carrying approximately 114,000 signatures were delivered to the APT headquarters to protest the… Read More →

Romney: Socialized Health Care Good For Israel, Not For U.S.

Romney: Socialized Health Care Good For Israel, Not For U.S. During a trip to Israel, Mitt Romney hailed the nation’s health care system for holding down costs and broadening coverage more effectively than the U.S. The irony: Israel contains costs by adopting a very centralized, government-run health care system – anathema to Romney’s Republican Party. “Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? Eight percent. You spend eight percent of GDP on health care. You’re a pretty healthy nation,” he said Monday… Read More →

NBC Explains Not Airing Opening Ceremony Segment Honoring London Terror Attack Victims NBC is on defense after opting not to air a segment of the Olympic opening ceremony that was seen as a tribute to victims of the 2005 bombing attacks in London. NBC, which has exclusive American broadcasting rights to the games, aired a pre-taped version of the opening ceremony during primetime in the U.S. on Friday. Instead of airing the segment which featured singer Emeli Sande performing “Abide With Me” along with a dance performance, NBC broadcast an interview with American… Read More →

Netanyahu Identified Palestinian Economic Growth As Key To Peace

Netanyahu Identified Palestinian Economic Growth As Key To Peace Mitt Romney touted Israel’s higher GDP as compared to the Palestinian territories’ as evidence of the US ally’s cultural superiority (and perhaps a little divine providence), but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pretty explicit about linking Palestinian economic woes to the occupation. In a speech to the United States Congress in May 2011, Netanyahu devoted a significant passage towards what he called the “booming” Palestinian economy, a development he attributed… Read More →

Mourdock: Obama’s Chrysler Bankruptcy Deal ‘Same Tyrannical Principle’ As 1858

Mourdock: Obama's Chrysler Bankruptcy Deal 'Same Tyrannical Principle' As 1858 Indiana GOP Senate nominee Richard Mourdock fired up a Tea Party crowd last week, by comparing the perhaps dry subject of his lawsuit against the Obama administration over the Chrysler bankruptcy to an older, more emotional struggle: Abraham Lincoln’s orations against slavery. Mourdock spoke to a FreedomWorks PAC event in Dallas, Texas, on Thursday. He narrated the tale of Abraham Lincoln’s debates with Sen. Stephen Douglas in 1858, in which Lincoln connected the debates on slavery… Read More →
