MSNBC Host Apologizes After ‘N-Word’ Controversy

MSNBC “The Cycle” co-host Touré apologized on today’s program for using the “n-word” during a segment yesterday. Specifically, Touré said Mitt Romney‘s campaign was sending coded racial messages by using certain words and phrases in campaign speeches.

“I know it’s a heavy thing, I don’t say it lightly, but this is ‘niggerization,’ You are not one of us, you are like the scary black man who we’ve been trained to fear.”

Today, the host seemed to stand by his comments, but walked back his language.

“I muddied the discussion by using the ‘n-word,’ I could’ve made the same point without that word,” he said. “I shouldn’t have used it and for that I’m sorry.”

The Ticker: Greta/Ryan, ABC/Univision, C-SPAN/Conventions

  • Wisconsin native and Fox News anchor Greta Van Susteren will anchor a special edition of “On the Record” tonight focusing on the life and career of Rep. Paul Ryan, the presumptive GOP VP nominee. The special features interviews with Ryan’s friends, family and neighbors in Janesville, Wisc.
  • NPR highlights the upcoming ABC News/Univision cable news channel. “Officials at the two networks say the formula, still evolving, will incorporate lifestyle programming as well, focusing on entertainment, food, health, music and pop culture.”
  • C-SPAN political editor Steve Scully outlines the cable channel’s RNC and DNC coverage plans, and how to watch:

Jorge Ramos On English Language TV’s Coverage Of Latino Issues: ‘I don’t think they get it’

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos is interviewed by Forbes about the network’s proposed Presidential debate on Latino issues. Along the way, he also puts on his media criticism cap:

How do you think the English-language networks are doing in terms of their coverage issues that affect the Hispanic community?

I don’t think they get it yet, and that’s a problem. The perfect example was yesterday. It was the most important day when it comes to immigration news in 26 years, since President Ronald Reagan gave an amnesty in 1986. What happened yesterday was of supreme importance. About 1.7 million undocumented students had a chance to apply for deferred action, not to be deported. Nothing as big has happened in the last 26 years, and we were the only network who started the newscast with that. I find that incredible.

When was the last time you saw an undocumented student talking on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN or Fox News? It’s very hard to find their voices, so I don’t think they get it yet.

Update: The knives are out from Ramos’ comment. See below.

Willie Geist Could Use Some Sleep

MSNBC anchor Willie Geist–who just completed two weeks of live Olympics coverage from London–could probably use a little rest. Yesterday Geist anchored his 5:30 am show “Way Too Early,” followed by “Morning Joe” where he interviewed Obama adviser David Axelrod. In the 10 AM hour he walked over to the “Today” studio for a segment with Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.

I assume he crawled under a desk somewhere to get some sleep, because 12 hours later, during the 10PM hour, he had a segment on “Rock Center,” which included a live studio segment with Brian Williams. Just a few hours later this morning he was filling in for Matt Lauer on “Today,” before making one more trip to the show’s fourth hour to talk to Kotb and Gifford.

That is appearances or anchor duties on six different shows in just over 24 hours. Not too shabby.

Pew: Media Credibility Tumbles Across The Board

A new study from Pew suggests that the public finds news organizations–including the broadcast and cable news channels–far less believable than they have in recent years. 10 years ago in 2002, approximately 71% of respondents found news organizations to be believable, with around 30% saying otherwise. Now that has shrunk to 56% of respondents finding the news believable, with 44% saying it isn’t.

Every news organization cited, from CNN to USA Today, lost credibility with respondents.

The two most believable news outlets are “local TV news” followed by the CBS newsmagazine “60 Minutes,” which for some reason was broken out from CBS News generally. It was the only individual program to do so. USA Today, MSNBC, The New York Times and Fox News were all towards the bottom of the list.

Charlie Rose Pulling Double Duty For Bloomberg TV Convention Coverage

Bloomberg TV is the latest network to slate 2012 convention coverage. Not surprisingly, its coverage will focus on economic issues, and will originate from the “Bloomberg Link” event space being set up in both Tampa and Charlotte.

Trish Regan will be the channel’s lead anchor for the conventions, while Charlie Rose will host his eponymous PBS and Bloomberg TV program nightly, in addition to his duties on “CBS This Morning.” Regan will anchor “Street Smart” every weekday from 3-5 PM, with nightly specials running from 9-10 PM each night, except the last night of each convention when it will run from 8-11 PM. The channel will also livestream its coverage online as well as events being held at the Bloomberg Link.

Bloomberg Washington editor Al Hunt, Bloomberg TV political analyst Matthew Dowd, Bloomberg View columnist Margaret Carlson, White House correspondents Hans Nichols and Julianna Goldman, along with chief Washington correspondent Peter Cook and Washington correspondent Meghan Hughes will all contribute to the channel’s coverage.

ABC News Slates 30+ Hours Of Live-Streaming Coverage Of DNC and RNC

ABC News has announced its coverage plans for the 2012 Republican and Democratic conventions. At the moment, the news division is getting one hour a night in primetime from 10-11PM to broadcast cover the events, though the network stresses that those are the only confirmed times, and that more hours may be added. Diane Saywer and George Stephanopoulos will lead the network’s coverage.

In addition, ABC is planning more than 30 hours of live-streaming coverage for ABC News digital and Yahoo! from the conventions, and every show, from “GMA” and ‘ABC World News” to “Nightline” will originate from Tampa and Charlotte.

Live-streaming coverage will run from 7:00 PM-11:30 PM, and will be anchored by ABC News political chief Amy Walter and Yahoo!’s DC bureau chief David Chalian, joined by ABC News anchors and correspondents.

Expanding on the previously announced joint events with Univision, Univision anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will contribute to ABC’s coverage as well.
