Thoughts go out tonight for longtime E Street saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who suffered a stroke in Florida on Sunday. Get well soon Big Man.

Note from Dave: This news is very sad; I really grew up listening to the E Street Band. Here's hoping The Big Man can make a full recovery.

The Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle is one of my first three island-desert albums. For my money, I'll place "Kitty's Back" as some of the finest sax work ever committed to vinyl -- or performed onstage. Here's a live version from 1975:

Get well soon Clarence. It seems like yesterday that I first saw you with Bruce and the rest of the E Streeters in Cincinnati, way back in 1976. You've brought a lot of people a lot of joy. May you recover to bring us all much more.

Shark:

I don't know about you but I'd be cool if Clarence never played again as long as he can enjoy life. As you rightly said, he's brought a lot of joy to others. He deserves his share of joy. I'm sure he'll play if he can - musicians do that.

I wasn't really into Springsteen until I heard Kitty's Back. I got to see the band twice in 1978 and got some of the Big Man's sweat on me when I worked my way to the front of the stage. Clarence is the real deal, and I sure hope he comes out of this okay.

The live video concert from which the youtube clip came is available on the Born to Run Anniversary album. For those "late-comers" to the music of Springsteen this is the perfect example of why his early fans were so fanatical about him long before he hit it big. My first show was in mid October of '73 at a small coffeehouse/club, the Main Point in Bryn Mawr. The version of Thunder Road, which opens the show at Hammersmith is the best version of the song I know. Springsteen never simply did a "concert," it was always a "show."

Healing energy to you.
