Kerry: Many U.S. Military Back Him as Their Commander

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I really, REALLY hope Kerry has some of those troops willing to speak up, or this is going to revive the debate over all those "foreign leaders" who want Kerry to win as well. Now, I think Kerry's right - there are very few foreign leaders who want Bush to win again, I suspect, and even Bob 'Darth Vader' Novak wrote an article recently about how senior military people were on the "anyone but Bush" bandwagon. If Kerry can't point that out, he might get away with this one. Perhaps this is part of some plan I'm not sensing, but it sure sounds like another chance for the Republicans to say "there he goes again." Unless, of course, he's planning on sucker-punching them by holding a press conference with some former military as soon as Bush responds. Read the rest of this post...

Fortune 500 dreads Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
For purely competitive reasons, corporate America increasingly prefers treating same sex partners the same as straight partners.

"In 1998 just 13% of the FORTUNE 500 offered benefits packages for same-sex partners of their employees. Today, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a lesbian and gay advocacy group, that number has increased to 40%. Most of those programs offer domestic partners the same raft of benefits given to heterosexual spouses.

...they are dreading the possible passage of President Bush's proposed Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. It could mean, for instance, that existing benefits plans for same-sex couples could be legally challenged as unconstitutional." - Fortune

Catholic University in Washington, DC has told students it won't let them form an NAACP chapter on campus because the organization supports abortion rights. I can't wait to see the fall out from this. This church is really intent on destroying itself. Read the rest of this post...

DC GOP in turmoil after gay Republican ousted from Repub convention

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Good. The DC republican party is falling apart at the seams after they banned openly-gay delegate David Catania from attending the party's national convention because Catania opposes the president's plan to include anti-gay discrimination in the Constitution. Interesting point the article raises about how Republicans basically overturned a democratic vote in DC that elected Catania as a delegate. But of course, we know that Republicans don't really care about who voters pick as their leaders. Read the rest of this post...

Texas Republican convention bashes gays

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Now the Texas Republican party is debating making gay marriage a felony. I guess they're still pissed the Supreme Court told them to they had to rescind their sodomy law (a law Bush supported).

As an aside, I remember there being more than a few rumors flying around the Web about the Texas governor a few months ago, and now he's bashing gays - how interesting...
Gov. Rick Perry stirred Texas Republican Party fervor Thursday with sharp attacks on gay marriage, abortion and presumptive Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry....

The Texas Republican Party platform committee wants to add a provision in the document urging that it be made a felony for a government official to perform a same-sex wedding -- or issue a same-sex marriage license.

Proposed changes to the state platform will be debated by the full convention later this week.

The current platform opposes same-sex marriage, but the committee adopted a change that says officials who perform same-sex weddings should go to prison.

15th Anniversary of Tiananmen Square protest, dissidents disappear

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
If politicians of both parties could look past the financial contributions of US businesses that operate in China, we might see some progress for democracy in China. Those who still protest in China, including the person being dragged away by the police here, are some pretty brave people in my opinion. The Chinese government counts on our feeble criticism of their behavior and continues to run roughshod over its own population as we in the west (Europe included) continue to pour in money that props up the communists. Let's see if any country criticizes China for rounding up potential dissidents and getting them out of sight. Read the rest of this post...

US dishes out an additional $300M to Egypt for "regional unrest" compensation

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Despite an annual payout of $2 BILLION to Egypt, they need more. Why do we continue to finance these dictatorships that despise us? Sure, I know we are supposed to be buying the peace, but this is crazy. Besides the $2B plus the additional $300M, the US and Egypt are working on another deal to provide $2B worth of loan guarentees. If we're going to be handing out this kind of money, perhaps it is time we take a step back and re-evaluate how well spent money like this really is. Does any of this money really help the general population of Egypt or does it only help out the top leadership? This also doesn't say much about US foreign policy that has to bribe countries in the region to limit government criticism of the Iraqi invasion. Read the rest of this post...

Russia wondering what happened to those WMDs

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Like the rest of the world and Americans who are not drinking the GOP Kool Aid, Russia is raising the question of those pesky weapons again. Uh, oh. Somebody wants to see some proof after Bush's pistol whipping of the world community last year. Since Bush suddenly wants new coalition members that can provide more than a couple hundred troops, he's trying to flog the WWII-unity pitch during his European trip. Europe might be wondering what ever happened to that unity a year ago. Read the rest of this post...
