Friday orchid blogging

An assortment of paphiopedilums...



These aren't mine, yet. They're at the orchid exhibit at the National History Museum here in DC. These are bulldog paphs, in particular, and I like them - am planning on getting one or two in a few weeks. There's a big orchid talk going on, specifically about this particular kind of orchid (paphs) in a few weeks. A bit geeky, but fun. And they're selling plants. These guys, the bulldogs, are not always cheap - can run from 25 bucks to thousands. The kinds I'm looking at could easily run 75 bucks and up. As for growing them, some paphs are easy, some aren't. The green and the red ones I posted a few months ago are easy, these bulldogs are a bit harder to bloom, I believe.

If our enviro groups don't take this issue and make mincemeat out of Bush, then we ought to stop funding them. I swear, it's time to slap the progressive groups silly until they start fighting HARD. This issue is BEGINNING for a national blow-up, and when's the first you hear about it, in today's Wash Post. Where's the national campaign that's so successful it's in all the papers?

I don't mean to beat the crap out of the left all the time, but actually, I do. I do this kind of blowing-things-up for a living, and I'm pretty damn good about it. Religious right sympathizer tries to force sex talk on young kids

Perv. Why do conservative Christians and their collaborators feel the need to sexualize our children? Can you imaginze the discussion that would have happened with those kids if this "ex"-gay actually came to talk to a high school class?

- So, what do you mean you were gay, did you actually fuck men?
- How many men did you fuck, and when's the first time you fucked a guy?
- When did you know you were first gay, did you every have sex with guys in high school?
- Does giving a guy a blowjob make you guy? How about receiving one?
- You say the gay lifestyle is outrageous, can you give me some details?
- Almost all the "ex"-gay literature says that being gay isn't a choice. But my parents and my church say being gay IS a choice? Are you telling me my religion is wrong?
- Most "ex"-gays say the only way to be "cured" from being gay is to "find Jesus." Are you preaching to me in a public school that I need to find Jesus? But I'm Jewish. But I'm Muslim. But my parents are atheists. Are you telling me, right here in my public school, that I need to be born again?

White House caught creating enemies lists for Bush's events

An "overzealous volunteer" created a list of 42 people to bar from attending President Bush's speech in Fargo, White House and state party officials said Thursday.

"It was the result of an overzealous volunteer," said White House spokesman Jim Morrell of the list. "We weren't aware of it here at the White House."

Republican Party officials and Morrell said they do not know the identity of the volunteer.

"I don't know if we'd ever be able to find out what overzealous volunteer it is or anything like that," said Jason Stverak, executive director of the North Dakota Republican Party. "We'll talk to people and stuff, but it will be impossible."

Morrell said do-not-admit lists are not standard practice for the White House.

New Enron audio tapes emerge

This newly released tape is about the Enron plans to create a bogus problem at an energy facility in Washington so they could take the plant offline and yes, charge higher prices because of the "emergency." I'm just glad that our legal system has worked so well that years after the fact they're still screwing around with this crap. Fortunately we have moral, ethical politicians who are also working hard to push this case.

Can you imagine what a world of trouble we will be in when Wall Street controls our retirement plans and they have "emergencies" that they need to address? We will be lucky to get anything back after they pick those programs to the bone.
