Delta Airlines employee says Delta routinely violates FAA anti-terrorism regulations

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I have a bone to pick with Delta Airlines. Call me crazy, but when the FAA promulgates rules to stop terrorists from taking over American airplanes and ramming them into the Pentagon with me on board, I take those rules seriously. How Delta takes those rules, well, let me tell you.

First, let me remind folks what the Dept of Justice recently said about the 30-minute-rule:
"The 30 minute rule on flights into and out of Reagan National Airport exists to help protect the critical infrastructure of our Nation's Capitol from a terrorist attack," U.S. Attorney O'Connor stated. "The need to comply with in-flight restrictions never has been more important. We have a zero-tolerance policy toward anyone who acts inappropriately during a flight, particularly for those who disregard the commands of flight attendants or a federal air marshal."
We're around 25 minutes out of DC (certainly less than 30 minutes out as the captain already said we were 30 minutes out) and someone gets up and walks the length of the plane and enters the bathroom in back. A few minutes later, that person comes out, and at 22 minutes out of DC another guy gets up and goes to the bathroom. He's there for 2 minutes, then goes back to his seat at around 20 minutes out of DC.

I find this odd, as the FAA regs say that all passengers to DC's National Airport have to remain seated 30 minutes out of DC until landing, or else folks are going to think you're the next Mohammad Atta trying to take over the plane. Let me make clear, NO ONE from the flight crew talks to any of these people or even vaguely challenges them - they didn't get permission to get up, they just got up, unchallenged and went on their way. Of course, right after take-off from JFK, as we were still climbing and had literally just gotten off the ground, a man gets out of his seat and heads for the bathroom, and the flight attendants don't bat an eye.

So, what does Delta do about several people getting out of their seats in apparent violation of FAA anti-terror regs? (As an aside, the passengers who got up weren't exactly innocent-looking grandma-types either.) What does Delta do? Nothing.

Finally, the flight attendant walked by at about 15 minutes out of DC and I asked him "aren't the 30 minute rules still in place for flying in to DC?" and he says "yes." I said, well, then why are passengers walking around? And the Delta employee proceeds to tell me that it's hard to tell the passengers to stay in their seats, a lot of them don't speak English (they're coming from foreign flights), and "there's no perfect solution" to the problem of these passengers apparently violating FAA anti-terrorism regulations.

I told the flight attendant that, uh, these were anti-terror regulations meant to stop terrorists from blowing up the plane and what did he mean "there's no perfect solution"? He said, what am I supposed to do, force them back in to their seats? The flight attendant then told me that they fly this route all the time and I have to understand that this is the way it works. Oh, so you routinely blow off the safety rules? Well now I feel better.

After a rather heated discussion with the flight attendant where I literally, quite really did mention the plane blowing up, did he then challenge the next woman who literally got out of her seat in front of us, so the guy didn't have a choice but to send her back.

So a Delta Airlines representative told me tonight that Delta routinely ignores the FAA's anti-terrorism regulations. And the reason they violate it is that a lot of their passengers are foreigners. Oh, well THAT explains it. I mean, we wouldn't want a FOREIGNER to have to comply with our anti-terrorism regulations, I mean, who would want to do something crazy like that.

I will say that, after I told the flight attendant I was a journalist and not happy about what was going on, he came back and talked to me a number of times and was very nice. But still, he made clear that the airline routinely violates this regulation, and that scares me.

I have only once since September 11 been on a flight that broke this rule and did nothing about it. And the passenger next to me said she'd never seen anything like it, nor did the guy in front of me and to the right who turned around and said he lived in DC and had never seen anything like this on a flight before.

So, the question for Delta is: Has someone at the FAA given you the nod to violate the anti-terror regs, are you just routinely violating them on your own, or are your flight attendants simply lying about this apparent routine violation of the rules (though, again, it clearly wasn't a big deal to them on this flight - again, NO ONE even spoke to these passengers, so spare us the excuses about there being exceptions to every rule - no one made an exception because no one cared to begin with).

It's bad enough the crappy quality of service you offer on your international flights (we're talking Air France gave us foie gras and an incredible meal on the way over, and on the way back Delta gave us salami and bad American bread (how do you GET bad American bread in Paris anyway - I mean you really have to try to pull that one off), but when it comes to safety, there's a reason I choose Air France over any American carrier, and today only reinforced that reason.

Oh, and one more thing. I was practically the last passenger off the plane as I was sitting in back, and as I stepped out of the plane on to the walkway the flight attendant pulled me aside to again explain. 5 feet away at the door of the plane stood this enormous hulk of a man in civilian clothes just watching us - he had to be an air marshall. If he was, where the hell was he while this was happening? Read the rest of this post...

And do I have a few choice words for Delta and their lax policies on terrorism. But first a bit of unpacking :-) Thanks so much to Joe for doing such a great job on the blog while I was gone - I think we have him pretty much addicted at this point. Consider this an open thread.

Steven L. Kreseski, why is your boss, Bob Ehrlich, bashing Gays?

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Just talked to John from JFK airport. He's finally back in the U.S. Told him about the Ehrlich veto of the gay rights bill and he was wild.

His question is why would Steven Kreseski, Ehrlich's openly gay chief of staff, stand for this? Let's ask him: (410) 974-3591

Hospital visits too much for Ehrlich?

Come on Steven....what's this about? How can you work for someone who thinks so little of gays? Ehrlich chose the radical right wingers over you and all the other gay staffers....and there are plenty of them in Annapolis.

Begs the question why any self-respecting gay or lesbian can work for a gay-basher. I guess self-respecting is the operative term. Read the rest of this post...

Cornyn -- who justified violence against judges -- takes the lead in filibuster debate

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Okay, this is rich. The guy who thinks violence against judges may be justified has taken the lead in the Senate on the nuclear option debate. Yep, Texas Republican John Cornyn, who just a couple weeks ago said:
SENATOR JOHN CORNYN: "I don't know if there is a cause-and-effect connection but we have seen some recent episodes of courthouse violence in this country. Certainly nothing new, but we seem to have run through a spate of courthouse violence recently that's been on the news and I wonder whether there may be some connection between the perception in some quarters on some occasions where judges are making political decisions yet are unaccountable to the public, that it builds up and builds up and builds up to the point where some people engage in - engage in violence." [Senate Floor, 4/4/05]
Now, Cornyn's filling in for the little puppet doctor on the Senate floor -- pushing the debate to the brink according to the Washington Post:
Cornyn rejected the idea that proceeding with a de facto rule change to end filibusters against judicial nominees would lead to a "constitutional crisis." He added, "This is a controversy, a disagreement, not a crisis." Once the matter is resolved by a majority vote, he said, "we should get back to work."

But Democrats have vowed to use other Senate rules, such as the need for unanimous consent to hold committee hearings, to tie up the chamber and prevent other business from going ahead.

In a floor speech preceding the cloture motion, Cornyn was critical of the bipartisan group of more than a dozen senators who have been trying to craft a compromise that would ensure votes on most of the contested nominees in return for preservation of the filibuster for use in "extraordinary circumstances."

The Texas senator said a resolution of the dispute should not be based on "some bogus suggestion, some deal cut by a handful of senators," that would "throw some nominees overboard" while leaving the main issue unresolved: the potential use of the filibuster to block a future Supreme Court nominee.

"Now is the time to resolve this issue once and for all," Cornyn said.
Resolve this issue once and for all, Senator Cornyn? Just exactly what do you mean by that. Does Cornyn have some kind of final solution in mind, we wonder. You know, if judges making political decisions incites violence...what does it mean when elected officials make political decisions....does Cornyn reach the same conclusion?

It just shows that the GOP acts with impunity. If they're not comparing Democrats to Hitler, they are justifying violence against judges.

We really are in a bizarro world. Read the rest of this post...

Breaking: Maryland's Governor to Veto Gay Rights Bill

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
If anyone ever asks you if elections matter, remember this day. Today, Maryland's Governor Bob Ehrlich is vetoing the state's gay rights bill according to the Washington Post:
Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has decided to veto emotionally charged legislation that would grant unmarried couples, including gay partners, certain rights if they register with the state.

Ehrlich (R) will detail his reasoning in a veto message to be released later this afternoon, spokesman Henry Fawell said.
Ehrlich has tried to present himself as a moderate. He isn't. His action today is hateful and spiteful. Today, he is officially a leading gay-basher. This is how the Post explains the legislation:
Modeled on laws in California, Hawaii and other states, the legislation would have granted nearly a dozen medical and funeral-related rights to unmarried partners who register with the state. Among the rights: to be treated as an immediate family member during hospital visits, to make health care decisions for incapacitated partners and to make private visits in nursing homes.
Which brings us to a question: Why is Bob Ehrlich so freaked out by gay people? I mean, c'mon...what is it about gays that gets under his skin.

Anyway, this is a setback in a state where gays shouldn't have setbacks. So, Ehrlich should know how people feel about this...and if you want to tell him, here's the link to his contact info:

Bush Will Veto Stem Cell Bill

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Bush said today he'll veto the Castle/DeGette Stem Cell bill, Reuters reports:
President Bush said on Friday he would veto legislation that would loosen restrictions on embryonic stem cell research and expressed concern about human cloning research in South Korea.

In the House of Representatives, supporters of embryonic research sponsored by Republican Rep. Mike Castle of Delaware and Democratic Rep. Diane DeGette of Colorado hope for a vote next week and believe it will be close.

Bush said the bill would violate his principles.

"I've made it very clear to the Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money, to promote science which destroys life in order to save life -- I'm against that. And therefore if the bill does that, I will veto it," Bush told reporters during a picture-taking session with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Actually, Bush could have said, "I've made it very clear to the Congress that I'm against science" because that's what his administration is all about. He'd probably just like to veto science. Read the rest of this post...

Another day, Another blistering article about the Ohio GOP rare coin scandal

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
The Toledo Blade is good. Today, they have yet another development in the still unfolding Coin-gate....a scandal which reaches through the entire Ohio GOP hierarchy:
A Colorado coin dealer used insider information to skim profits from Tom Noe’s $50 million state-funded coin venture, recently released records from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation show.

An October, 2004, memo states that early last year Mr. Noe “became aware of possible fraudulent activities” by Michael Storeim, the former manager of Numismatic Professionals, the Colorado-based subsidiary set up by Mr. Noe to buy and sell rare coins for the state.
So, now add profit skimming to the list of shenanigans. Makes you wonder what else is going on in Ohio -- and makes you really wonder to what lengths the powers in the OH GOP that be will try to cover up their messes -- and how much they are willing to spend to do it.

This story just keeps giving and giving. Read the rest of this post...

Santorum "meant no offense" with Hitler remark

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
Uh huh. Usually when people refer to Hitler, it's in a positive way and of course it's never, ever offensive. Where the hell does this guy get off with these remarks?

Meanwhile you have the wingnuts and their pal Howie Kurtz jumping all over Howard Dean about his Delay comment. Funny how it's OK for the wingnuts to make Hitler remarks, to call people un-American for being against the war and to rip people like Galloway without proof but someone talking about Delay going to prison is over the line. A new report from Bagram

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
And who would have guessed that there are more stories about torture and even death of prisoners being held by the US. So does this mean that the US won't be able to join the Human Rights commission in the new GOP-UN? Maybe before the White House and the Republicans jump on the "bash Newsweek" bandwagon and accuse them of being responsible for deaths they can think about Bagram not to mention what has happened at Abu Ghraib and Gitmo.

The hypocrisy within the White House and radical right/GOP is incredible. Unlike the anti-Newsweek hysteria, there is a direct connection to people being killed in this report. Read the rest of this post...

Prayer Breakfasts for Hypocrites West and Bush

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
According to the Spokane Spokesman-Review, one of the first events on the mayoral calender of Anti-gay, but not gay in his mind, Jim West, was a prayer breakfast:
Feist said the mayor is expected to attend this morning’s Greater Spokane Leadership Prayer Breakfast, previously called the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, which is expected to attract 800 people to the Spokane Convention Center.
And, Chimpy was at a big prayer breakfast today in DC. This one was for the Catholics. His remarks were released by the White House. First, what a dope:
I am sorry that Laura is not here. You probably think she's preparing a couple of new one-liners.
Yeah, I'm sure a bunch of uber Catholics would appreciate her jokes about jerking off horses and Chippendales. But then he got in to the pandering over Pope John Paul II. You know, they shared a commitment to the culture of life:
The best way to honor this great champion of human freedom is to continue to build a culture of life where the strong protect the weak. (Applause.) So, today, I ask the prayers of all Catholics for America's continued trust in God's purpose, for the wisdom to do what's right, and for the strength and the conviction that so long as America remains faithful to its founding truths, America will always be free.
Oh, I am sure the crowd went crazy for that one....here's a thought for any of those Catholics in the room, there are many culture of life issues....read what Pope John Paul said about the war...and the death penalty...feeding the poor....the list goes on and on...could you once, just once, challenge Bush on something instead of kissing his ass because he is a gay-basher who opposes a woman's right to choose.

The only thing that would have been more fitting would to have had Mayor West at the Catholic meeting. They could figure out a strategy to protect him like they protected the pedophile priests for so many years. Read the rest of this post...

Red Cross had warned US about Quran mishandling

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
The Red Cross said they would not have raised the issue if it was a minor problem or had it not been credible. And the big surprise? The problem was reported in Afghanistan, Irag and Gitmo so that darned Lyndie England really must have been getting around, being that she was the ringleader of that global problem as we know by reading the MSM. Either that or it was Newsweek jumping around the globe planting these stories.

So is the White House telling us without a doubt that these problems never happened? Can we get a clear, concise answer on this? When is McClellan going to say that he is 100% sure, without a doubt that this never happened? Let him go on record so when the reports say otherwise he can do the honorable thing and resign. The old south lives in the Big Easy

The mayor's office in New Orleans ran an undercover study recently after receiving complaints that blacks were overcharged and mistreated along Bourbon Street and the results seem to back up the complaints leaving mayor Ray Nagin to wonder aloud "it's as if New Orleans was stuck in the 1950s and 1960s, in terms of race relations."

I can only imagine what the Mayor would think if he came to Europe where few non-whites manage to get into the top schools, hold political positions or have senior management jobs. Looks plenty of people around the world need to catch up with the times. Read the rest of this post...

GOP drafting a bill for UN reform

View Comments | Reddit | Tumblr | Digg | FARK
I have many issues with the UN and think they can blow money as well as any organisation out there but the GOP wants to selectively decide which projects will receive their money because of waste and criticism of US policy. So is this going to mean that Americans who think that the war is rubbish can tell the US government that they are not going to give tax money for programs that they don't believe in? Heck, we've all seen a lot of waste in Iraq not to mention the energy bill which is going to shower the petroleum industry with taxpayer corporate welfare so maybe we can all just say no to that as well.

And the proposal to remove countries from the Human Rights commission who are human rights abusers? I guess this means the US is going to get thrown off the the list with recent events at Gitmo, Afghanistan, Iraq not to mention turning over prisoners to "friendly" nations who use torture. What brillant people thought up this stuff? Galloway may be flakey but how right he was when he told Coleman that his ideas are not quite so popular outside of Washington.

One of these days the wingnuts are also going to figure out how to add up a few numbers as well and understand that the EU member states contribute more money to the UN than the US so quit flogging that stupid pitch about the US being the largest contributor. The EU is about 5% more of the budget. Read the rest of this post...
