Guest commentary: Get beyond check-box confusion and be sure to vote

Confusion best describes the situation Michigan voters face in the November general election. Not so much over the candidates or issues on the ballot, but by the confusing question of declaring U.S. citizenship, now caught up in the ethical and legal questions raised by both elections officials and critics who have recently filed a federal lawsuit opposing the action.

Two days ago, Status Creative’s “Pure Michigan Singalong” was taken off of YouTube due to a copyright technicality stemming from use of the song “Good Time.” And while negotiations are still ongoing to get the video back up, Michiganders might be interested to know that the video is indeed still viewable, and what’s more, in one of the most unlikely of places: China.

Opposing points of view: A simple check box on citizenship protects the integrity of every vote

For the past three elections, our office has used a check box on ballot request forms that reminds voters they must be a U.S. citizen to vote. Why? Michigan could have thousands of noncitizens on its voter rolls, with at least an estimated 4,000 according to new data.

  12. Mitt Romney: I'll deliver recovery, not dependency

Since our founding, America has promoted personal responsibility, the dignity of work and the value of education. Those values made our nation the hope of the earth and our economy the envy of the world. Efforts that promote hard work and personal responsibility over government dependency make America strong. When the economy is growing and Americans are working, everyone involved has a shared sense of achievement, not to mention the basic sense of pride that comes with the paycheck they earn.

I was not aware of a film insulting to Islam until American embassies were attacked in Libya and Egypt. Thus, Muslim extremists managed, through the expedient of riot and rampage, to bring attention to the very thing they loathe, a thing which, but for their help, would have been little noticed. The irony of that likely goes over their heads like a jet plane.
