NY Times Blames US For Libyan Terrorist

Anyone surprised?

(NY Times) One brother joined the global jihad against the West under the nom de guerre Abu Yahya al-Libi. He rose to become Al Qaeda’s brightest star and second in command, until an American drone strike killed him in Pakistan four months ago.

The other brother, Abdel Wahab Mohamed Qaid, was the first to become an Islamist militant but is now a moderate member of Libya’s new Parliament.

As the United States weighs responses to the Islamist-led assault on its diplomatic mission in Benghazi that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Mr. Qaid says the two brothers’ diverging paths trace a timely lesson: a parable of the dangers of treating the many different strands of political Islam as a single radical threat.

Abu Yahya’s support for Al Qaeda, Mr. Qaid said, began after his years as a prisoner at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan — an account supported by Western analysts who have studied Abu Yahya’s life.

Both brothers had previously shunned Osama Bin Laden and the cause of global jihad as irrelevant to their single-minded focus on ousting the Libyan leader Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi. But then, after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the United States-led invasion of Afghanistan, the Americans began rounding up any Islamist militants they could find, regardless of their specific ideology or agenda; Abu Yahya was captured in Pakistan and imprisoned without trial at Bagram.

When he finally escaped in 2005, picking a prison lock and evading his guards, Abu Yahya, originally known as Mohamed Hassan Qaid, was reborn as the leading theologian, propagandist and battlefield commander of an Islamic holy war against the West that left little room for local concerns like the struggle for Libyan democracy.

See? Abu Yahya turned into a lunatic terrorist because he was imprisoned by the evil United States….what was he doing in Pakistan, anyway? Um, consorting with al Qaeda and the Taliban? Because he started hanging in Afghanistan and studying under Islamic extremists back in the early 1990′s, studying Islam under scholars who hung out with ……. al Qaeda and the Taliban, among other extremist groups.

It is stated that “When he returned two years later” [from his Islamic studies in Mauritania, Africa], “Afghanistan was no longer a battleground for militant Libyans, but rather a haven: the Taliban controlled most of the country. Mr. Libi’s training in warfare was minimal, and his early work as a preacher rarely touched on militant action, according to the Libyan man who said he had met Mr. Libi in Afghanistan, and who spoke on condition of anonymity out of security concerns. “He started to visit training camps and talk about Shariah,” or Islamic law, this man said in a telephone interview, about “morals, etiquette, how to act.

Yeah, that excerpt came from the NY Times.

What the Times is also attempting to do is separate violent extremist Islam from those who are pushing political Islam, with notions such as Sharia law. I guess the Times hates women and gays, who are treated like dog sh*t under hardcore Islam.

Romney To Go After Obama On Libya

This should create a lot of whining and complaining from Team Obama, and force them to either defend or refute their terrible handling of Libya

(Politico) Using his harshest language yet, Mitt Romney will go after President Barack Obama on Monday over the attacks on the U.S. consulate in Libya.

In a tough foreign policy speech at the Virginia Military Institute here, the GOP presidential nominee will link the attacks in Benghazi — including the killing of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens — to a broader critique of Obama’s foreign policy as naïve and weak.

“The attacks on America last month should not be seen as random acts,” Romney plans to say. “They are expressions of a larger struggle that is playing out across the broader Middle East — a region that is now in the midst of the most profound upheaval in a century. And the fault lines of this struggle can be seen clearly in Benghazi itself.”

Besides Virginia’s role as a prized swing state, campaign officials said they chose VMI as the venue because George Marshall — the former Army chief of staff during WWII who became secretary of State and then Defense during the early years of the Cold War — is an alumnus. Romney will open and close his speech with homage to Marshall, quoting Winston Churchill to praise Marshall for always fighting against “defeatism, discouragement and disillusion.”

Romney advisers say Romney will try to position himself as the continuation of a bipartisan foreign policy tradition going back to Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan that emphasizes U.S. strength.

This should be interesting, and a far cry from Obama’s “leading from the golf course/campaign trail, er, behind” approach, as well as his belief that all he has to do is make a quick speech, say “get it done”, and things will just work out. Obama just isn’t willing to put in the hard work necessary to do the job. That’s not something you can ever ascribe to Romney, a guy who, for instance, was spending 70+ hours a week when he took over the Salt Lake Olympics.

What’s The Deal With “FireBigBird”?

Funny stuff

(WRAL) Two University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill business majors are capitalizing on the furor that flew after Mitt Romney suggested defunding the public television stations that air Big Bird.

The Republican presidential nominee mentioned the 8-foot, talking canary who stars in “Sesame Street” by name when discussing cutting taxpayer money for the Public Broadcasting System.

“I like PBS. I love Big Bird,” Romney said. “But I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for it.”

UNC freshmen Andrew Bauer and Taylor Robinette were among those who quickly took to social media to express dismay over Big Bird’s potential demise.

“I just remember Big Bird and how happy he made me feel and other Americans feel,” Bauer said. “When Mitt Romney took a shot a Big Bird, he was taking a shot at all the Americans that cared about their childhood hero.”

And they love Big Bird. Both also state that aren’t for Romney or Obama (sure). So, they went ahead and started FireBigBird.com, selling t-shirts with a caricture of the Obama “Hope” poster. But, they’re not for Obama. And they’ve done pretty well, apparently, having sold out of their t-shirts, getting orders from around the world. It’s been a great learning point for capitalism.

But, they say they aren’t keeping the money

Bauer and Robinette are applying the lessons about sharing that Big Bird taught them. They’re donating 100 percent of the profit from the T-shirt sales to charities, including the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

“Not only did we see a great opportunity to have some social impact and give money to charity, but we also do treasure the Big Bird icon,” Robinette said.

Um, why not send 100% of the money to……PBS? You know, the station which carries Big Bird, and receives taxpayer money for operations, along with…..donations!

Warmist Quote Of The Day

Funny stuff, via Tom Nelson

(UCR Today) “Because higher education provides the intellect and initiative to move this country forward, it is important that we set the standard for society to aspire to and train the intellectual community and the workforce to preserve this planet for future generations … and do battle with the causes of climate change,” said UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White.

Warmists have been “spreading awareness” for 20 years, and, that’s pretty much all they do. I suggest UCR turn all the lights off in order to protect Gaia.

Anyone else have a link or hotty-fest going on? Let me know so I can add you to the list. (BTW, since someone asked, the reason I leave links for the previous week up (or you might see a *) is because they are place holders for later in the day or for next weeks. Easier than rewriting all the time. Also, the listing order has to do with how they are added over time, not how good a post is. I just copy and paste from the previous week, then edit. If you see one of the *’s, go ahead and check out the blog anyhow, see if there is an update. I cannot update with my Android during the day.

The posts do take a long time, so, if you want to send me your links for Rule 5 babeage or links, use ye olde email in the header bar (remove the NOSPAM part). Preferably, create the html link so I can copy and paste how you want it to read.

Good Grief: Washington Post Complains That Romney Should Be Worth More

The media, including opinion writers, spent oodles of time and planet killing paper and energy writing about Haditha, Korans in toilets, soldiers peeing on dead Taliban bodies, loud music and cold temps at Gitmo, but can’t find it in themselves to write about the Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan, al Qaeda growing in Egypt and Libya, Fast and Furious, the Libyan 9/11 attack cover up, why Obama is using official White House resources for campaigning, and a host of other issues. The difference is the letter of Party affiliation. But, they can come out with stuff like this (via Ace)

Mitt Romney is worth $250 million. Why so little?

Mitt Romney is indisputably a very rich man. And if he is elected president on Nov. 6, he will become one of the wealthiest people ever to hold the office.

But exactly how wealthy is Romney? The figure that gets tossed around is $250 million in net worth — meaning the total value of his assets, financial and others, minus any debts.

It’s a big number, but frankly, it seems low. Given the industry in which he made his fortune (private equity), the era when he made it (the 1980s and 1990s) and the wealth of his peers in that business (mostly billionaires), Romney should be worth a good bit more than that.

Why isn’t he?

Then we get all sorts of gobbledygook (interestingly, that word is part of WordPress spellcheck, but spellcheck isn’t) as to why Romney should be richer but isn’t, finally getting to the point that Romney left Bain before the private equity market took off. And then we learn that a guy who gives over 30% of his income every year to charity is stingy

He has also been exceedingly charitable with his wealth, although unlike several of his private-equity peers, he has not signed the Giving Pledge, which would commit him to giving most of his fortune to philanthropic causes.

Facepalm, considering that Democrats are exceedingly stingy with their own money when it comes to charity (as opposed to being forthcoming with Other People’s money)

Does it really matter if Romney is worth $250 million, $1 billion or more? Rich is rich after all, right? I think it does, politically as well as substantively.

Politically, the alternatives are not great. If he were perceived as the first real billionaire to run for president, it would only exacerbate popular doubts about how someone living so removed from the concerns of average Americans — or even just 47 percent of them — could effectively represent them.

And if he is not a billionaire, doesn’t it suggest that he was not a great private-equity investor after all, thus torpedoing his claim to understand how to create jobs and get the economy back on track?

Something to keep in mind on Nov. 6.

Good f*cking grief. Romney’s damned if he does damned if he doesn’t. He took off to pursue saving the Olympics and then elected political positions, but, damnitall, he should have made more money. Or maybe spent his time agitating people and writing books like Obama, who’s done such a wonderful job with the economy and jobs.

Bummer: Electric Cars Bad For Environment

The article does pose the position that electric cars are better in the long run, but, of course, there is no data yet to support that position

(BBC) Electric cars might pollute much more than petrol or diesel-powered cars, according to new research.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology study found greenhouse gas emissions rose dramatically if coal was used to produce the electricity.

Electric car factories also emitted more toxic waste than conventional car factories, their report in the Journal of Industrial Ecology said.

Hmm, that sounds bad

“The production phase of electric vehicles proved substantially more environmentally intensive,” the report said, comparing it to how petrol and diesel cars are made.

“The global warming potential from electric vehicle production is about twice that of conventional vehicles.”

In addition, producing batteries and electric motors requires a lot of toxic minerals such as nickel, copper and aluminium.

Hence, the acidification impact is much greater than that of conventional car production.

“Across the other impacts considered in the analysis including potential for effects related to acid rain, airborne particulate matter, smog, human toxicity, ecosystem toxicity and depletion of fossil fuel and mineral resources, electric vehicles consistently perform worse or on par with modern internal combustion engine vehicles, despite virtually zero direct emissions during operation,” according to Prof Stromman.

So, they pretty much suck.
