Madarosis is the absence or loss of the eyelashes (and sometimes the eyebrows), either as a congenital condition or as a result of an infection.E.g. Leprosy,alopecia totalis etc.
Madarosis is the absence of eyelashes and in severe cases eyebrows. It can be caused by infection or malignant neoplasms.
Causes of madarosis:
Local causes: 1)chronic disease of the frontal eyelid lips 2)infiltrating tumors 3)burns 4)radiotherapy of cryotherapy of local tumors
Skin conditions: 1)generalised alopecia 2)psoriasis
Systemic Causes 1)myxoedema 2)Systemic Lupus Erythematus 3)Syphilis 4)Leprosy
Other 1)Iatrogenic (e.g. after excision) 2)Trichotilomania
