It Actually Matters

Two good pieces on what’s at stake in Chuck Hagel’s possible (non?) nomination to run the Pentagon. In short, Hagel would likely lean toward putting some pressure on Israel on the peace-making front (a good thing) and would likely resist a move to war with Iran (also a good thing). Washington neoconservatives don’t want either; ditto for AIPAC and the Israel lobby. And now it seems they’re going to win this one. Which is really unfortunate.

A couple pieces to read on this. One by Peter Beinart, another by Andrew Sullivan. I’ll be posting others.

Teddy Jr Opts Out

Ted Kennedy, Jr., son of the late senator, says he will not run for John Kerry’s seat in the Senate.

I must say that I still have a bad feeling about how this is going to work out.

The Ban on Studying Gun Violence

You’ve probably noticed this. But a big part of the gun violence/regulation debate is the lack of good scientific studies on the subject. And a big reason for that the CDC and NIH have been banned from funding any such studies. Here’s a good run-down on the topic.

“My final offer is this: nothing”

I don’t know whether this is accurate. If anything it doesn’t square with my read on what happened or President Obama’s negotiating style. But it makes for entertaining reading.

Wow

I’m still amazed, angry, shocked that Wayne LaPierre actually tossed a ‘have you no decency’ at like 80% of the country today.

Onion Invading Real Life

The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that a dentist was within his rights firing an assistant who he found attractive simply because he and his wife thought she was a threat to their marriage. That seems a bit iffy to me. But perhaps he could be held culpable simply for saying the following. And I don’t just mean for harassment – that seems kind of like a given in this case, just for being maybe the weirdest dentist ever, in addition to being a harasser.

Called “Google Glass: Explorer Edition,” the version of the hi-tech specs Google has promised to ship each cost a whopping $1,500 per pair, orders of which were restricted to those lucky… Read More →

Did The NRA Faceplant After Newtown?

Did The NRA Faceplant After Newtown? In the immediate aftermath of the Newtown, Conn. shootings, some pro-gun politicians (mostly Democrats) begged the National Rifle Association to be part of a fresh conversation about gun violence, focused on many aspects of society including the availability of semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines. A week after the elementary school tragedy, the NRA has given its answer: No. At a press conference Friday and a closely-watched appearance Sunday on Meet The Press, NRA… Read More →

Wayne LaPierre: If It’s Crazy To Put More Guns In Schools, Then Call Me Crazy

Wayne LaPierre: If It's Crazy To Put More Guns In Schools, Then Call Me Crazy In his first media appearance since the Friday press conference that drew outrage from gun control advocates, National Rifle Association vice president Wayne LaPierre once again made it clear Sunday on Meet The Press that the NRA is not going to change its hardline stance on gun regulations after the Newtown, Conn. shooting. Not only did LaPeirre say there was no chance new gun control will pass in Congress, he made it clear he’s unfazed by the critics who attacked his press conference. Read More →

Facebook Reboots ‘Poke’ As An iPhone App With Timed Messages

Facebook Reboots 'Poke' As An iPhone App With Timed Messages Facebook’s “Poke” feature, a relic from the social network’s earliest days when it first launched in 2004, was reborn on Friday as an app for the iPhone and iPad. But the new free “Poke” for iOS comes with a major twist: Instead of its predecessor’s generic “you’ve been poked by” message, the app allows users to send timed text messages, photos, even video, to multiple recipients, and the messages disappear after a preset time – either 1, 3, 5, or 10 seconds. Meet The Man Leading The NRA’s Push For Guns In Schools

Meet The Man Leading The NRA's Push For Guns In Schools At the National Rifle Association’s press conference on Friday, the group’s Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called on Congress to “immediately” put armed police officers in every school, and rejected any suggestion that the nation’s gun laws needed to change in the wake of last Friday’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. At the end of his defiant remarks, LaPierre also announced the NRA’s plan to develop a National School Shield Emergency Response Program, a “multifaceted”… Read More →

Pelosi: No Concessions To Help Boehner In Fiscal Cliff Talks

Pelosi: No Concessions To Help Boehner In Fiscal Cliff Talks In the wake of House Speaker John Boehner’s Plan B debacle, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is calling on him to consider bringing President Obama’s most recent fiscal cliff offer – which includes $1.2 trillion in new tax revenue, and hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to safety net programs – to the House floor. But though she evinced little appetite for moving the framework to the left, and expressed willingness to “iron out” differences with Republicans, she made clear… Read More →

There’s One Thing The NRA And Democrats Agree On: Speed

There's One Thing The NRA And Democrats Agree On: Speed The one surprising thing at the National Rifle Association’s press conference Friday was that the nation’s largest gun lobby didn’t call for more time to reflect on the Newtown, Conn. shootings. Time has usually been on the NRA’s side – the longer between a mass shooting and a political response to it, the better for folks who want to see gun control off the table. But the NRA wants to act now, with group vice president Wayne LaPierre calling on Congress to put armed guards in… Read More →

NRA CEO Claims Media Circus Following Shootings Inspires More Violence

NRA CEO Claims Media Circus Following Shootings Inspires More Violence Responding to the shooting last week at Sandy Hook Elementary School, National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre accused the media of “rewarding” mass killers with “wall-to-wall” coverage and called news organizations “silent enablers, if not co-conspirators” in the violence. “How many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame, from a national media machine that rewards them with the wall-to-wall attention and sense of identity that they crave, while provoking … Read More →

Lautenberg Takes A Shot At Booker Over NRA Presser If there’s going to be a Democratic Senate primary in New Jersey, it’s going to be a nasty one. A day after an adviser to Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) told TPM Booker will run for Senate regardless of whether incumbent Sen. Angry NRA Chief Blames Anything But Guns For Massacre

Angry NRA Chief Blames Anything But Guns For Massacre The central message from Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, was a simple one on Friday, as he spoke out on the Newtown, Conn. school shootings for the first time: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” Neither he nor the other NRA officials who spoke at the highly-anticipated news conference in Washington, D.C. took any questions from the media. But LaPierre did offer the journalists assembled plenty of… Read More →
