Unfortunately he didn’t have anything worthwhile to say, he just mumbled a bit.

Another Libertarian Cult Compound in the Making

This one comes not from Glenn Beck, but from a group of “patriots” who are nothing more than glorified Doomsday Preppers.

via TPM

A group of self-appointed “patriots” are moving forward with an idea for a planned community of several thousand families of “patriotic Americans” in Idaho, a project named The Citadel, envisioned as a “martial endeavor designed to protect Residents in times of peril (natural or man-made).”

“The Citadel is not profit-driven. The Citadel is Liberty-driven: specifically Thomas Jefferson’s Rightful Liberty,” the group organizing the project says on its website. “Marxists, Socialists, Liberals and Establishment Republicans will likely find that life in our community is incompatible with their existing ideology and preferred lifestyles.

Their language is slightly different in some ways and very similar in others, but I view these new “liberty” retreats that are popping up in the same way that we may view the militia movement of the 1990s or even the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas.

From my perspective it’s what you get when you mix the hysterical rhetoric of the NRA and the conservative entertainment complex with the psychosis of so-called sovereign citizens, and I would not be shocked if they suffer a similar fate after they drink their own Kool-aid and begin living under the assumption that they are exempt from the law.

A major difference between the 1990s and today is that today they have a lot more money, a lot more guns, and a lot more exposure in mainstream politics thanks to the likes of Fox News and Glenn Beck who are making millions of dollars by legitimizing this alternate lifestyle and view of the world. And because of this quasi-legitimization, their ranks are swelling.

From the Southern Poverty Law Center’s latest report on the “Patriot movement.”

The antigovernment “Patriot” movement has experienced a resurgence, growing quickly since 2008, when President Obama was elected to office. Factors fueling the antigovernment movement in recent years include changing demographics driven by immigration, the struggling economy and the election of the first African-American president. In 2012, the Southern Poverty Law Center identified 1,274 anti-government “Patriot” groups that were active the prior year. Of these groups, 334 were militias and the remainder includes “common-law” courts, publishers, ministries and citizens’ groups.

Generally, Patriot groups define themselves as opposed to the “New World Order,” engage in groundless conspiracy theorizing, or advocate or adhere to extreme antigovernment doctrines. Antigovernment groups do not necessarily advocate or engage in violence or other criminal activities, though some have. Many warn of impending government violence or the need to prepare for a coming revolution.

If there is a group of Americans that anyone should be afraid of, it’s these people. People who consider Alex Jones to be a heroic figure.

I would caution liberals who dabble in libertarianism to take a good, hard look at what exactly that kind of ideology enables.

NRA Blames Video Games, Releases Their Own Video Game

This is a screenshot taken by ThinkProgress of the NRA’s mobile app called “NRA: Practice Range.”

The app bills itself as a “network of news, laws, facts, knowledge, safety tips, educational materials and online resource.” The NRA reports that it “[i]nstills safe and responsible ownership through fun challenges and realistic simulations.”

But it isn’t all about hunting. It allows players practice shooting at targets — coffin-shaped targets, with red bullseyes at head- and heart-level

What’s really amusing is that the app includes micro-transactions that allow users to pay a small fee to upgrade their virtual weapon to something more powerful.

And that, in itself, encapsulates the NRA’s reason for being: to make more money selling ever-larger penis extensions to fearful people.

The NRA is a representative of the gun industry far more than it is a representative of gun users. And they’re very good at it. All they have to say is jump and gun enthusiasts will ask how many guns they should buy.

Government Shutdown Fever

We may be headed for a government shutdown in the near future unless Republicans blink at the last second, and a shutdown would would harm a lot of people in a variety of ways, but we may need to go down that road so childish, selfish, shitkickers in congress can “get it out of their system.”

GOP officials said more than half of their members are prepared to allow default unless Obama agrees to dramatic cuts he has repeatedly said he opposes. Many more members, including some party leaders, are prepared to shut down the government to make their point. House Speaker John Boehner “may need a shutdown just to get it out of their system,” said a top GOP leadership adviser. “We might need to do that for member-management purposes — so they have an endgame and can show their constituents they’re fighting.”

Yeah. We may need to screw the whole world economy to get it out of their system, because they have an itch, and the only cure is a government shutdown.

Sorry, college students. Sorry, small businesses. Sorry, veterans. Sorry, troops currently serving overseas. They need to get it out of their system. Like a flu bug, except you’ll be the ones who are suffering through it.

New York Will Enact New Gun Control Measures

Good news — according to the Associated Press, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature have seemingly come to agreement on a set of new gun control measures.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo and legislative leaders have a tentative deal to enact the nation’s first gun control measure following last month’s Connecticut school shooting, according to people familiar with the negotiations, further tightening gun laws in a state that already has among the nation’s strictest.

The tentative agreement would further restrict New York’s ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than the current 10. Other elements, pushed by Republicans, would refine a mental health law to make it easier to confine people determined to be a threat to themselves or others.

Senate Republicans also have included a further crackdown on illegal gun trafficking into New York, the people said. Most New York City gun crimes involve weapons illegally brought into the state, state and city officials say.

The latter part of the proposed set of new laws is more important than it may seem, because in the shooting capital of Chicago, for example, the majority of guns used in violent crimes do not come from within the state. The majority of guns used in violence crimes in Illinois are exported from the neighboring state of Indiana, while Illinois also serves as the largest export market for the state of Mississippi according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.

Similarly, an overwhelming majority, 66.5 percent, of guns used in violent crimes in the state of New York come from other states including, but not limited to, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.

The question now is whether this is any indication of what gun control measures that make it through congress will look like.

I hesitate to guess or hope knowing how irrational and irresponsible Republicans in congress have become.

Explainer in Chief

During his press conference this morning, President Obama took the opportunity to explain how the debt ceiling works since so many people both in and outside of politics seem to be unaware.

The issue here is whether or not America pays its bills. We are not a deadbeat nation. And…. there’s a very simple solution to this: congress authorizes us to pay our bills.

If the House and the Senate want to give me the authority so that they don’t have to take these tough votes, if they want to put the responsibility on me to raise the debt ceiling I’m happy to take it.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, had a proposal like that last year, and I’m happy to accept it, but if they want to keep this responsibility then they need to go ahead and get it done.

And there are no magic tricks here. There are no loopholes. There are no easy outs. This is a matter of congress authorizes spending. They order me to spend. They tell me you need to fund our defense department at such an such a level. You need to send out social security checks. You need to make sure that you’re paying to care for our veterans. They lay all this out for me, because they have the spending power. And so I am required by law to go ahead and pay these bills. Separately, they also have to authorize a raising of the debt ceiling in order to make sure those bills are paid.

So what congress can’t do is tell me to spend X and then say we’re not going to give you the authority to go ahead and pay the bills.

He also made it very clear, once again, that he will not play games over the debt ceiling and said that Republicans “will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy.”

If Congressional Republicans refused to pay America’s bills on time, Social Security checks and veterans’ benefits will be delayed. We might not be able to pay our troops or honor our contracts with small business owners. Food inspectors, air traffic controllers, specialists who track down loose nuclear materials wouldn’t get their paychecks.

Investors around the world will ask if the United States of America is in fact a safe bet. Markets could go haywire. Interests rates would spike for anybody who borrows money. Every homeonwer with a mortgage, every student with a college loan, every small business owner who wants to grow and hire.

It would be a self-inflicted wound on he economy. It would slow down our growth, might tip us into recession and, ironically, would probably increase our deficit.

So to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the United States of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd. As the Speaker said two years ago, it would be — I’m quoting Speaker Boehner now — a financial disaster not only for us but for the world wide economy.

So we’ve got to pay our bills. And Republicans in congress have two choices here: they can act responsibly and pay America’s bills, or they can act irresponsibly and put America through another economic crisis. But they will not collect a ransom in exchange for not crashing the American economy. The financial well-being of the American people is not leverage to be used. The full faith and credit of the United States of America is not a bargaining chip.

The president drives a pretty hard bargain, and if you are someone who incessantly calls for the president to use the “bully pulpit,” you should be elated, because this is as close to doing that as you can get.

The White House press corps, in all their professional glory, also asked the president today why he doesn’t socialize with people who hate him more. And considering that derptastic question, you can see why he felt the need to explain how basic governance works.

Bobby Jindal Proposed a Really, Really Stupid Idea

What a terrible idea:

Gov. Bobby Jindal is proposing to eliminate Louisiana’s income and corporate taxes and pay for those cuts with increased sales taxes, the governor’s office confirmed Thursday. The governor’s office has not yet provided the details of the plan. [...]

Jindal said the plan would be revenue-neutral and that the goal would be to keep sales taxes “as low and flat as possible.”

Of course this would disproportionately hurt poorer Louisianans and help wealthier Louisianans. Why? Poor people spend as much if not more than what they earn. Rich people spend only a small fraction of what they earn. Bottom line: this is nothing more than a Poor Tax.

An Update on the Worst Court Ruling Ever

Ashby posted about this a few days ago, but in case you missed it:

A California appeals court, relying on an outdated statute that prohibits someone from pretending to be someone’s husband but not their boyfriend in order to obtain sex, overturned a man’s conviction for rape because the woman he had sex with was unmarried.

But there’s some good news on the horizon. Fortunately, a pair of bipartisan lawmakers in California have proposed legislation to close this ridiculous loophole. Very serious question: what the hell is going on?! Why has the past year been ‘The Year In Which We Make Excuses For Rape?’ The only statement about rape that makes any sense is this one: DON’T RAPE! Short of that, it’s all bad.

Is NBC Really This Tone Deaf?

As you’re probably aware, there’s something called the ‘gun show loophole’ and makes it possible for people to buy firearms without waiting periods or background checks at trade shows. Basically, under-the-table gun sales to any yokel who wants them. Keep that in mind when you read this:

Next week, thousands of gun dealers, traders, and enthusiasts will gather in Las Vegas for the annual Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, which touts itself as the largest trade show of its kind in the world. When it does, NBC Sports will be a lead sponsor.

Shame on NBC for this. And by the way, anyone who claims that NBC is all about promoting liberalism is clearly full of crap. NBC is all about promoting NBC, even if it means paying gun manufacturers to advertise at their loophole-ripe gun trade show.

Welcome to Glenn Beck’s Grifter Theme Park

My Monday column begins like so:

This is what happens when one very delusional, very opportunistic grifter makes more money than he knows what to do with thanks to easily-tricked disciples who willingly endorse his madness. Yes, Glenn Beck is building an amusement park called — what else? — Independence Park.

But he’s pitching it to be much more than a roadside tourist trap with a tilt-a-whirl, concessions and skeeball. Beck and his ridiculous imagineers want their herd of followers to believe it’s a real city — their own version of Ayn Rand’s “Galt’s Gulch,” a place that’s entirely divorced from the rules of American society, yet it ironically claims to be a facility for elevating the Beck version of American values and teaching it to suckers who pay the price of admission.

Realistically, it’s a monument to the conservative entertainment complex. [continue reading]

Florida Governor Rick Scott Is Beloved By Satanists

The Satanic Temple of Florida appreciates Governor Rick Scott and his idea of religious freedom so much so that they are gathering with fellow Satanists on the steps of the Governor’s office this January 25th– presumably for an upside down cross vigil in support of Governor Rick Scott and his inspiring defense of “religious liberty,” especially for Satan.

In a statement released by the Satan People, they explain their support,

via Raw Story:

“The Satanic Temple embraces the free expression of religion, and Satanists are happy to show their support of Rick Scott who–particularly with [Senate Bill] 98–has reaffirmed our American freedom to practice our faith openly, allowing our Satanic children the freedom to pray in school.

This all comes from SB 98– a bill Governor Scott signed into law in July of 2012– a bill that “allows for inspirational messages by students at non-compulsory school events,” and the Florida Satanist Temple believes this will directly benefit their numbers and overriding message of hope and Satan. About 1.2 percent of Americans are religious and do not identify as Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or Hindu. According to the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life,

“approximately 1.2 percent of Americans are religious and do not identify as Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim or Hindu. The majority of this  group is identified as “Unitarians and other liberal faiths.

They’ve got hearts and minds to recruit!

When he signed the bill, Governor Scott tweeted:

“Please share” and  ”Praise God.”

No word on whether or not Rick Scott will show up to the rally, but I’m told his thoughts and prayers go out to Satan.

Colin Powell On GOP: “Dark Vein Of Intolerance”

On this Sunday’s Meet The Press, Colin Powell was asked by David Gregory about his views on today’s Republican party. Colin Powell spoke candidly about the state of the party as he sees it.

Via Think Progress:

POWELL: There’s also a dark — a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party. What do I mean by that? I mean by that that they still sort of look down on minorities. How can I evidence that?

When I see a former governor say that the President is “shuckin’ and jivin’,” that’s racial era slave term. When I see another former governor after the president’s first debate where he didn’t do very well, says that the president was lazy. He didn’t say he was slow. He was tired. He didn’t do well. He said he was lazy. Now, it may not mean anything to most Americans, but to those of us who are African Americans, the second word is shiftless and then there’s a third word that goes along with that. The birther, the whole birther movement. Why do senior Republican leaders tolerate this kind of discussion within the party?

It’s becoming old news hearing Colin Powell try to talk sense to his party, and it’s a testament to the Republican party to disappoint a guy who worked side by side with George W. Bush, but I found it particularly poignant that Powell went on to say,

“everybody wants to talk about who is going to be the candidate– you better think first about what’s the party actually going to represent.”

That’s why the Republican party deserves no pity. Whom, or what, do they actually represent? The demographics are not on their side, and they refuse to change, or soften in their collective rigidity. They’re still trying to pass Sanctity Of Life acts, giving full legal rights to zygotes and amend the constitution to make abortion a capital crime. At this very minute they’re threatening to crash the global economy again and again until the American people and the world over recognize the power and divine righteousness of right wing conservatism!

Unfortunately for America and Colin Powell’s sobering advice, the Republican party is not listening, and instead of doing all any of that– because it’s humanly and scientifically impossible– they’re working frantically to restructure the way they communicate their already carefully-worded crazy, not to communicate new ideas, mind you, but to better protect an insidiously anti-social platform.

Because everyone knows it is better to look good, than to feel. Anything.

Gun Groups Planning “Gun Appreciation Day”

In what is being advertised as “a National Day Of Gun Appreciation” to take place on January 19th, the same weekend that the country will be observing Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the inauguration of President Barack Obama, gun nuts have set aside their own day of reflection and national observance– with their guns– possibly over a romantic weekend getaway in a motel with a heart shaped bed and a whole roll of quarters:

An invitation soliciting the Tea Party and “Chic-fil-A style” activism?

Larry Ward, Chairman of the National Gun Appreciation Day advocates, was on CNN recently explaining how he was actually following in the footsteps of Martin Luther King Jr. by celebrating a day of guns, saying:

“I think Martin Luther King, Jr. would agree with me if he were alive today that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bear arms from day one of the country’s founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history.”

Oh, sure. Martin Luther King Jr. would certainly agree with Larry Ward– had he not been assassinated by a fellow gun enthusiast with a rifle.

So far, the NRA has avoided endorsing the big day, but their silence should not be taken as disapproval, and with backers like Redstate. com, and Ron Paul’s Revolution PAC, Gun Appreciation Day should be a huge win for tone deaf imbeciles everywhere.

The country has been observing gun appreciation days for years, via Mother Jones:

Oh, we appreciate guns in this country.

Every mass shooting in America is never the work of just one mentally ill person. It’s the work of a whole network of mentally ill people.

Crazy People

Speaking of gun control — Wyoming state legislators are experimenting with nullification.

In a bill sponsored by eight representatives and two state senators, the lawmakers stipulate that “any federal law which attempts to ban a semi-automatic firearm or to limit the size of a magazine of a firearm or other limitation on firearms in this state shall be unenforceable in Wyoming.” These two measures have been among Biden’s proposals. The Wyoming bill also makes it a felony to enforce federal gun laws.

I’m old enough to remember when conservative states threatened to nullify Obamacare, but they never followed through. Probably because doing so would be blatantly unconstitutional.
