Working as a CPO in the UK requires you to legally hold a licence issued by the SIA to show you are a competent enough operative to protect a principal and members of the public, the licence can be acquired by attending a close protection course and getting a level three award from one of the awarding bodies-

  • Buckinghamshire New Universityclose protection operative
  • City & Guilds

  • HABC
  • IQ

Once you have completed training and passed the required tests you will be able to receive your qualification from one of the above sources and then you can apply to the SIA to receive your licence and begin employment as a close protection operative.

Close protection Training

In the UK there are many close protection training providers to choose from but not all are of the same price and quality so it is important to do some research before paying any fees so you don’t end up making the wrong decision and lose a deposit if you change your mind.

Different training providers cover different aspects of close protection but all generally cover the basics to enable you to pass the required test. One aspect that a lot of training companies miss out is interview and employment skills and training, these are important skills to learn as it would be frustrating to pass and be qualified for service but struggle to find a job because you can’t do well in your interviews.

Close Protection Qualifications

Once you have your qualifications it will be wise to try to gain more skills and refresh yourself at regular times during your career, although it is not a requirement of the SIA it is a great idea and it shows to employers that you want to get ahead and be the best operative you can possibly be.

Close Protection Operative Profile

While there is no one shoe fits all when it comes to a close protection operative but it is important to fit a certain profile and have some skills before you train, as an example if you didn’t like confrontation you won’t do well as a CPO.

Some traits you should have are

  • Above Standard fitness- Being physically fit is a must for CPO’s as there will be times when you will need to push yourself to the limit
  • Staying focused under stress- If you can’t keep your focus under pressure then you will struggle to perform well
  • Above average hearing and vision- being able to see and hear well is very important as you will use these the most
  • Ability to work as part of a team – Most jobs will involve a team of operatives working together instead of just a lone operative
  • Top communication Skills- Being able to communicate affectively is a must to keep control within a team or with the principal.
  • Being Inconspicuous- Some jobs require you to blend in with the crowd and allow the principal to feel a bit more normal
  • Being Conspicuous- As the opposite to above some jobs require you to stand out from a crowd and put people off from acting out
