Doctor Who: 10 More Actresses Who Could Play The 12th Doctor

Now, I don’t actually think having the Doctor regenerate into a woman makes a lot of sense. He’s a man. Why would his body heal itself by turning into a woman? But I still do think there are many, extremely talented women out there who have what it takes to play the iconic role so this list celebrates the possibilities of that alternate timeline where The Doctor is a woman.

In order to add a bit of structure to this list I introduced a couple of constraints to the choices that I could make. For example the actresses had to be from the United Kingdom as every actor to have played the Doctor has been – we need to keep some level of believability, we’re already casting him as a woman, lets not go crazy! Also, they have to be alive. But apart for those limitations the picks could be anyone.

In addition to casting ten women in the role of the Doctor I’ve also picked who will play their version of The Master as well as picking out one companion for each of them. Mainly the companions are male because if you have a female lead you also need a male lead. It’s just tradition. So without further bluster take a look at 10 more actresses who could play the 12th Doctor.

5. Emilia Clarke

Her Companion: Iain Glen
Ser Jorah returns to the BBC. This might be an interesting partnership if Glenn’s Doctor Who character, Father Octavian is brought back. I always liked him for some reason (it was probably his voice) and seeing his aggressive lifestyle clash with the Doctor would be some interesting drama.

Her Master: Harry Lloyd
Harry Lloyd should be in everything. He should be the Doctor and the Master but we already have a Doctor so his part can be delegated to that of The Doctor’s great nemesis. After three or four episodes playing a sort of dark version of Clarke’s character Daenerys in Game of Thrones he’s already off to a great head start in delivering yet another spine-chilling performance.

Her Doctor
From khalessi to Time Lord, I see it. A woman with enough natural authority to command a hoard of angry horse-lords has enough authority to be our favorite Saturday night hero. Whilst her Game of Thrones character can be fairly whiny I think it is more down to the writing than personal choices made by Clarke herself. Scenes where we see the political, scheming side of Daenerys demonstrate the intelligence that she could bring to the Doctor role

4. Natalie Dormer

Her Companion: Finn Jones
Brother to her Game of Thrones character Margaery, Finn Jones also plays the grandson of third Doctor companion Jo Grant so this could be a fairly interesting relationship. In Game of Thrones the brother and sister are closer than any other like Jo once was to the third Doctor.

Her Master: Lena Headey
Yes, I am right. Lena Heady as the Master would be awesome. She had the uncanny ability to seep evil from every pour of her body and still put in a brilliant performance. The two actresses bat horns most weeks in Game of Thrones and it seems that neither can quite get the upper hand. A very Master/ Doctor-like relationship.

Her Doctor:
Power struggles are central to the characters that have made Natalie Dormer famous. Just watch her play the Game of Thrones, in Westeross or in the Court of King Henry VIII. You might be able to identify a surprising similarity between her and the Second Doctor. Each put on a false persona to manipulate those around them into doing what they want. She would make a very devious Doctor indeed…

3. Tamsin Greig

Her Companion: Bill Bailey
I chose Bill Bailey because of the ‘Black Books Connection’ of course but also I think the man could easily play the companion to a woman. He is very humble, funny and endearing, he possesses all of the traits needed to make a good companion. How has no one seen it before!?

Her Master: Gina Bellman
I think it is tragic that Gina Bellman has fallen to the edge of familiarity in the eyes of the public. She proved her comedy chops in Coupling and went on to reaffirm her brilliance in Jekyll. It is through her performance in Jekyll where we get to see a simple housewife pushed to the very edge of morality. Gina Bellman does ‘dark’ very well, dark and desperate. Two traits perfect for the Master

Her Doctor
Something of a comedy legend, Tamin Greig appears in some of the finest and most successful comedies that have come out in the past twenty years. In keeping with the ‘Petwee Principle’ she would make a good Doctor assuming her encompassing talent for dry humor and endless supply of confidence remain in tact.

2. Maisie Williams

Her Companion: Joe Dempsie
The relationship between Gendry (Dempsy) and Arya (Williams) in ‘Thrones is a legendary one in certain back-alleys of the internet where the age-of-consent laws don’t apply so it’s clear they work well together. Besides it would be really nice to get Dempsie back on British television. He’s missed.

Her Master: Chloe Grace Moretz
Kind of breaking the ‘British rule’ but then the Master has been played by American Eric Robert so she wouldn’t be the first. Chloe Moretz kind of is Williams’ real life parallel. They both acted in uber-violent hyper-real properties. They both stand out in those properties as the best characters (Peter Dinklage withstanding). It would be illogical not to make them face off.

Gods, I make it sound like a dog-fighting ring.

Her Doctor
Yeah, I just went there! And yeah, this is happening. I went through about every British actress out there, Kira Knightly, Kate Winslett, Emily Blunt and none of them have half the charisma, authority or charm of this one 16 year old (13 pictured). Williams is the most bad-ass character in a show about bad-ass characters. In a world where women are constantly downtrodden and seen as nothing more than pretty little bargaining chips Williams’ Arya is the night and day opposite of that.

The Doctor’s regenerations seem to be getting younger so why not go the whole way? Williams has more than enough talent to pull it off.

1. Emma Thompson

Her Companion: Hugh Laurie
Hugh Laurie could be the Doctor but he could also be the companion. He’s that good. Hugh Laurie has so well recognized in the eyes of the public that I barely feel he needs an introduction. As an old uni-friend of Thompson’s I feel he would fit right in to the vibe any show whose cast she lead.

Her Master: Jennifer Saunders
Same age, same hair colour, same comedy-based past. Who would dream of faulting my in-depth analysis? Jennifer Saunders was detestable as the Fairy Godmother in Shrek, if she could bring the same energy to the Master then Britain would love to loath her for it.

Her Doctor
Emma Thompson is a complete legend. Actor, Comedienne, Writer, Oscar, BAfTA and Critic’s Choice award winner If there’s a job in TV or film Emma Thompson can do it better than you. If Emma Thompson had turned around in the final scene of ‘The Name of the Doctor’ it would have been just as awesome a twist. Emma Thompson brings class to even the most mind-numbingly awful properties (Junior starring Arnold Schwarzenegger anyone?) and would do just as much for the already wonderful Doctor Who.

Thompson has proven herself to be massively versatile from portraying another Time-Lord Nanny McPhee to one of the most definitive Elanor Dashwoods on screen, Thompson could effortlessly turn her hand to the greatest part in British Drama.

people watch what they want, it might not be your thing but it's theirs, it's not that hard to get
fantaesticbaby 1st-Jun-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
I think for a lot of people (in the UK at least) it's a show you watched with your parents when you were younger, so it's associated with fond childhood memories.

I don't watch it anymore but that might be because I don't live with my parents anymore and it used to be a thing for us to watch it as a family.
tragickingdomxo 1st-Jun-2013 10:22 pm (UTC)
Me neither, plus add the fandom aspects and it's a total DNW.
hippie_chick 1st-Jun-2013 10:23 pm (UTC)
Me either and not for lack of trying. I have friends who are way into it and that's their thing, but I just can't get with it. LOL

I loved watching re-runs of the 80s and 70s versions but when it came back in 2005 I thought it was gonna be slated for how cheesy it was..but people spun it like it was part of its charm. Didnt see it that way tbh
forcestrong 1st-Jun-2013 10:36 pm (UTC)
Ditto. It's been hilarious to watch the stans whine about plot holes and writing that ducks the scientific impossibilities... as if the didn't always have plot holes and bad writing.

I watched several seasons with my husband, for his sake, and he finally let me off the hook and now watches w/out me.

mte....kind of. Like, I understand people being into it for the campiness and fun, but those who whinge about the plot holes and the ~deep messages~ of it...dude it's a 50-year old show about an alien played by a weird-looking british dude traveling the world in a police box fucking up space-time continuum as a daily activity, shit ain't that serious

fauxkaren 1st-Jun-2013 10:09 pm (UTC)
lol A female Doctor would be SUCH a disaster. NO TY.

First of all, given the current show runner and his track record with writing women, if the Doctor regenerated into a woman, I am sure that we'd be treated to some ~hilarious~ "omg! I have boobs now!" jokes or other unfunny sexist "jokes".

But really, I think it brings up trans* issues and issues of gender fluidity that I have zero faith would be handled well. I mean, there's an idea much debated in fandom (mostly because the show itself is kinda iffy on which is true) as to whether when the Doctor regenerates if he remains the same person but with a new face or if he becomes a different person. If he remains the same person, then even if he regenerates into a female body, he'd still be a man because wouldn't you say that gender is tied to identity and who you are as a person and NOT what sexual characteristics you have? But if you have the Doctor regenerate into a female body and suddenly start identifying as a woman, then.... does the Doctor actually become a different person when he regenerates? Or is the show saying that just because he has a female body, he is now a woman? Or does it mean that Time Lords are gender fluid?
torontok 1st-Jun-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
IA with all your points. It would be great if they could have a female doctor but at this rate it;s going to be a mess
mrs_dalliard 1st-Jun-2013 10:11 pm (UTC)
i don't even want to imaging how moffat would fuck up a female doctor storyline. no ty.
mistress_f 1st-Jun-2013 10:14 pm (UTC)
this
crystalzelda 1st-Jun-2013 10:17 pm (UTC)
I want it to be done, but not with Moffat.
fauxkaren 1st-Jun-2013 10:18 pm (UTC)
If the show does it, should the show a) have the Doctor be a trans man b) say that Time Lords are gender fluid or c) establish that the Doctor does indeed become a different person with each regeneration?

Because idk. Those seem like the 3 options to do when casting a woman to play the Doctor.
hateistoodark 1st-Jun-2013 10:22 pm (UTC)
yeah i would rather not deal with that shit
they need to start writing better companions first
zoaster_toaster 1st-Jun-2013 10:26 pm (UTC)
Those are legitimate reasons to not cast a woman as the Doctor, especially with its current showrunner.
randommakings 1st-Jun-2013 10:34 pm (UTC)
While I agree with all your points I have to disagree with the idea that a female doctor couldn't be done.

I think it could be but Moffat CERTAINLY isn't the one to do it.
hollymarchosias 1st-Jun-2013 10:52 pm (UTC)
There's a theory about how Time Lords can change gender through suicide, but IIRC it's not canon--only an idea expressed through an officially licensed AU.

But yeah, a female Doctor at this rate would be a concept that few people can wrap their heads around--and I could start with the opening line of this post.
melissa_ivory 2nd-Jun-2013 05:18 am (UTC)
Everything you said I have seen brought up with Moffat's first foray into writing Doctor Who when he did the Comic Relief special Curse of the Fatal Death, although the Trans* issues are a more recent argument.
grapefruitzzz 2nd-Jun-2013 12:45 pm (UTC)
That's very thoughtful. They could write some interesting proper-SF about how gender identity could change or not with a sudden body change.

It also makes me wonder if he has particularly associated as male before or just 'alien'? I think Moffat has gendered him quite a lot (I just remembered a horrible moment at 11's regeneration where he touched his collar-length hair and said "I'm a girl?!?". Like it's 1950)

I still think it could be done with some careful writing, but obv never never with Moffat. In fact, I'd rather he didn't write any female companions either and just have the Sherlock In Space he clearly wants. Then I could stop watching.

melissa_ivory Re: The rest of the list:2nd-Jun-2013 05:19 am (UTC)
If Suranne took over, it would pretty much be like the Doctor wanting to physically emulate the humanoid body the TARDIS was put in, which I would be okay with.

I would love it to be Emma

I just envisioned the whole first scene in my head - and it was pretty awesome. Although it did involve her looking at her tits and saying 'well that's new'.
manita_bestija 1st-Jun-2013 10:56 pm (UTC)
that would be like an episode of Q.I.
ticklemepink127 2nd-Jun-2013 12:57 am (UTC)
which would result in the best season of QI on the Tardis ever
melissa_ivory 2nd-Jun-2013 05:20 am (UTC)
Why does everyone assume the Master will return? His body wasn't stable and he's pretty much the lock on the Time War now, so yeah.
onanemptyshore 1st-Jun-2013 10:10 pm (UTC)
I don't watch this show (my friends do, I have to hear about it), but I think it could be someone from Game of Thrones. The name alone would get some interest state side

it's like wishing for a pony when you were a kid for Christmas. You know you're not getting that fucking pony but you're still kinda hoping it'll materialize under the tree on the 25th.
