'Spartacus' Liam McIntyre talks marathon and meets Kirk Douglas

7 June 2012 11:12 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

On Thursday, May 31, Australian newcomer Liam McIntyre -- who took over the title role of the rebellious gladiator from the late Andy Whitfield in Starz' sword-and-sandal epic series "Spartacus," in the most recent season, subtitled "Vengeance" -- got to meet the man who truly originated the role ... Kirk Douglas.

"It was the thrill of my life," McIntyre tells Zap2it, calling in on his way to the airport to fly back to work in New Zealand. "Probably in a week or two, I'll realize I had a conversation with Kirk Douglas, like, we knew each other. It's amazing."

McIntyre is currently working on the third season of the show -- fourth, if you count the prequel series, "Gods of the Arena" -- called "Spartacus: War of the Damned," which has also been announced as its last.

Due to premiere in January 2013, it concludes the story of Spartacus' war on Imperial Rome. »

'Spartacus: War of the Damned' -- Season 3 teasers from Steven DeKnight

4 June 2012 12:12 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

On Monday, June 4, Starz announced that their hit show "Spartacus" wouldn't go beyond Season 3. Though fans will be disappointed to hear the news, it sounds like this season is going to be even more intense than the last. Zap2it spoke to executive producer Steven DeKnight, who gave us some information about what we're going to see in the final season "Spartacus: War of the Damned."

He tells us a bit more about the new character Crassus, played by Simon Merrels. "We have mentioned that Crassus is kind of the "Elite Roman Boogie Man".  Everybody whispers about Crassus. You don't want to cross Crassus.  We really knew that we were gonna introduce Crassus, but we wanted to lay in that feeling that this is a guy that not only the rebels fear, but also other Romans fear. Merrells, who we brought in, has been doing a fantastic job."

Spartacus Kirk Douglas (in the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film), and showcased  the release of his (tenth!) book, I Am Spartacus! Making a Film, Breaking the Blacklist (which comes out on June 12th).

In them you may notice that the current star of Starz Spartacus series, one Liam McIntyre is in the house and showing proper respect to the legendary actor, while appearing to promote the upcoming  third season off Spartacus.  At the event, McIntyre presented Douglas with a special sword that had inscribed: ”For Kirk, the original hero. "Spartacus: Vengeance" star Liam McIntyre, and creator/producer Steven DeKnight, hit the red carpet on Thursday evening in Los Angeles, as they joined Starz to help celebrate the legendary 1960 "Spartacus" star Kirk Douglas and the Thracian legend.

Liam said he was grateful to Kirk for the iconic character the 95-year-old created on screen, one made even more epic by McCarthy-era blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (who first wrote the project under a pen name).

"The idea of what Spartacus is, was created... it's a few lines in some old, old texts from Greeks and Romans, and hundreds of ...

The Grey's hero, dead? Perish the thought

31 May 2012 1:53 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Grey is out on DVD this week, so at last we can talk about the end … which clearly isn't

Things don't look so great for Liam Neeson at the end of The Grey. He's the last remaining survivor of an aeroplane crash in the frozen tundra, and he's hemmed in by a pack of gigantic, man-eating wolves, who aren't all that well disposed toward him because he's polished off a fair few of their mates in the previous couple of days. As the film draws to its thrilling conclusion, the seething leader of the wolf pack faces off against Neeson, and the two get set to engage in a vicious, mano a mano, winner-takes-all duel to the death. Meanwhile, the rest of the wolves move a side and give the boys room to operate. No two ways about it, Neeson's backed himself into a tight corner this time!

Timothy Bottoms: The Hollywood Interview

Timothy Bottoms Gets His Pound Of Flesh

By

Alex Simon

Timothy Bottoms became an overnight sensation at the height of the so-called “Easy Riders and Raging Bulls” era, after landing the leading role in The Last Picture Show (1971), Peter Bogdanovich’s film about the social and sexual rites of small town Texans in the early 1950s. Internationally acclaimed for his portrait of Sonny, a sensitive kid struggling to find his way in the harsh landscape of post-war America, the then-twenty year-old Bottoms suddenly found himself not only in-demand as a rising young star, but a major celebrity, as well, with younger brothers Sam (who co-starred in The Last Picture Show), Joseph and Ben following in their older brother’s footsteps, making names for themselves on stage and screen. Bottoms reprised the role of Sonny for Picture Show's 1990 sequel, Texasville.

100 Facts on Universal Pictures' 100th Birthday

30 April 2012 11:28 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Today marks the 100th birthday of Universal Pictures and to celebrate the studio has released a list of 100 facts based on its first 100 years in existence. I have placed in bold some of the ones I found interesting as well as offered a selection of photo and video accompaniments here and there. 1. Universal Film Manufacturing Company was officially incorporated in New York on April 30, 1912. Company legend says Carl Laemmle was inspired to name his company Universal after seeing "Universal Pipe Fittings" written on a passing delivery wagon. 2. The only physical damage made during the filming of National Lampoon's Animal House was when John Belushi made a hole in the wall with a guitar. The actual Sigma Nu fraternity house (which subbed for the fictitious Delta House) never repaired it, and instead framed the hole in honor of the film. 3. The working title for Et: The Extra Terrestrial was "A Boy's Life. »

10 Of Saul Bass' Greatest Title Sequences

25 April 2012 9:22 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The art of movie titles is becoming an increasingly lost one: aside from a few films (the Bond movies) and directors (Steven Spielberg, David Fincher and Jason Reitman always pay particular attention to their credit sequences), it feels like relatively little care is taken over such things, with many movies dumping them altogether. And it's hard not to put that down to the fact that we don't have guys like Saul Bass around anymore.

Bass was a graphic designer from the Bronx who went out West in the 1940s and started working on film ads. After being noticed by Otto Preminger, who would become his collaborator for the next twenty years starting with "Carmen Jones" in 1954, Bass went on to design some of cinema's most iconic title sequences and posters for world-class filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese, often in an instantly recognizable style that remains influential »

I figured for the first episode I would ease it in and just slowly titillate and tease your senses of what you can expect from the series…. it was either this or a Japanese girl being taken by a dog with a strapon…. yeah…. Anyways!

First Look: 'Django Unchained' Teaser Poster

12 April 2012 9:40 AM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

The minimalist teaser poster for Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx, has just been released.

Why Leo Missed the 'Titanic' 3D premiere

Showing a broken chain over the silhouette of two gun-toting men – one who sports broken chains – and simply stating "The New Film by Quentin Tarantino – Christmas," the poster channels the style of the late great Saul Bass (whose memorable black-on-red movie poster imagery elevated such titles as Vertigo, West Side Story and Spartacus).

Tarantino's follow-up to Inglourious Basterds follows a former slave-turned-bounty hunter who sets out to rescue his wife from a ruthless plantation owner with the help of his mentor.

Samuel L. Jackson Channels 'Pulp Fiction' for NBA

Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Don Johnson and Kurt Russell also star in the period Western, which Tarantino is calling a "Southern."

Stanley Kubrick: Master of Contradictions

9 April 2012 11:53 AM, PDT | The Moving Arts Journal | See recent The Moving Arts Journal news »

Who are the great American film directors? More to the point, who do we think are the great American film directors? Well, there’s Ford, of course, the Zeus of the American pantheon, by turns comic, epic, maudlin and humane. Then there’s Welles, the ill-fated genius, abused by producers but beloved of critics. Spielberg, even in his seventh decade, is still the boy wonder; Scorsese the mad scientist. Griffith is the wise forefather, deeply flawed but idolized nonetheless, while Hawks is ageless, just as sly and self-assured as he was at the time of “The Big Sleep” (1946).

Kubrick, however, beats them all.

Is there anyone more respected or, with the possible exception of Hitchcock, recognizable? Turn on any Stanley Kubrick movie and you should know instantly, whether you’ve seen it before or not, who the film’s director is. The peerless, pristine images; the long, empty corridors; the upturned, »

Hail Caesar! What's Good & Bad About the New Sword & Sandal Movies

4 April 2012 7:02 AM, PDT | Moviefone | See recent Moviefone news »

I come to praise Sword & Sandal movies -- not to bury them. But with Wrath of the Titans and the Sword & Sandal/sci-fi mash-up John Carter not exactly setting the world on fire -- along with recent disappointments like Immortals and Conan -- it's getting more difficult by the day to believe that the Sword & Sandal movie can survive the recent fumbling of this otherwise great genre. And that's a shame, because the Sword & Sandal movie -- known for its gladiatorial games, pagan orgies, depraved emperors, and the occasional snarling cyclops -- may represent the most colorful and enduring movie genre of all time. So for the uninitiated, what exactly is a Sword & Sandal movie? Like its cousin the Biblical epic, a Sword & Sandal movie -- or 'peplum,' named after a type of ancient Greek garment -- is typically set in the ancient Mediterranean world, and dramatizes the fight for freedom. »
