The Shapeshifters of Bullshitistan

I. Foreward

I thought I would continue the phrase I coined during the Bush II Administration ("Bulshitistan"), however, I though it should be placed in a series rather than in random places in comments and the like.

The language spoken in Bullshitistan is designated as BS-01.5572, but in scientific circles it is called "double-speak," a language which has been studied incessantly (Propaganda Is A "Toxic Asset", quoting Professor Lutz).

II. Swamped

It is in honor of the quickest draw in the swamp:
It took former President George W. Bush 1,205 days to reach a majority disapproval rating. Former President Barack Obama crossed that threshold in 936 days.

And President Donald Trump did it in just over a week.

The Republican, who was sworn in on Jan. 20 as the least popular president in at least 40 years, hit majority disapproval in a record eight days, a new
"Dood, that was an awesome EO !"
Gallup poll of 1,500 Americans finds. As of Saturday, 51 percent of Americans disapproved of Trump.

Trump’s majority disapproval rating comes after a tumultuous first week in office that was capped off with his widely protested executive order banning immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries. After the president’s first day in office, millions of women and men protested his agenda in the Women’s March on Washington and sister marches around the world.

III. The High Priestess

The high-priestess of BS-01.5572, The ConWay, wrestles with her tongue in cheek to cross the eyes and dot the teeth of her victims:
With doublespeak, banks don't have "bad loans" or "bad debts"; they have
The Tommy
"nonperforming assets" or "nonperforming credits" which are "rolled over" or "rescheduled."

Corporations never lose money; they just experience "negative cash flow," "deficit enhancement," "net profit revenue deficiencies," or "negative contributions to profits."
(ibid). The ConWay graduated from The Donald University with the highest honor, "Silver Tongued Devil", and is a close ideological descendant of The Patron Saint of The Plutocracy (Ayn Rand: Patron Saint of The Plutocracy, 2, 3, 4).

Currently,  The ConWay is casting aspersion spells on those who are making fun of her for running off the rails to temporarily make things up in violation of the fundamental rule (BS-01.5572.Rule.001): "only things that the base will believe can be made up out of whole cloth" (Bowling Green massacre? Kellyanne Conway has taken alt facts up a notch).

IV. So Called

The Shapeshifters of Bullshitistan (SOB) are constantly at war with the  So-Called Realm, (SCR, a place where facts and law matter).

SOB has recently given SCR a "take that" motion, which backfired (U.S. appeals court denies request to restore Trump's immigration ban).

One thing to note is that the Federal Court of Appeals is not paranoid about lies (It Takes A Culture To Raise A Compulsive Liar), so SOB will take that into consideration (according to the SOB rule-book, generally, the next step is to threaten SCR with an invasion).

The Donald University vs. The Lord GOP University

Why is duct tape & platic on sale?
I have to give V.P. Biden credit for, from his political perspective, answering the question "what do you think of the Republican primary?" with the answer "It is a gift from the lord."

I also have to give credit to a commentor who made a comment on my criticism of the GOP heavyweights for not allowing their people to vote for the GOP candidate of their choice (Doomer Tuesday).

That commenter wrote "Look for the GOP voting school to evolve" (comment by Randy).

Today, First Professor of The GOP University, Gov. Mitt Romney, delivered his first lecture on "How To Vote Properly and please the Lord GOP."

I can't say that I disagreed with the obvious things he indicated in that lecture, but I saw through it for what it was.

They are trying to save their majority in the Senate.

The Donald can stop that along with losing the presidential race for them.

Who the democratic nominee will be is equally clouded with intrigue.

Will Hill be indicted like the war hero General Betray Us Petraeus was?

Or Will Hill's speeches extolling the virtues of Wall Street be kept secret?

That is our homework assignment.

This collapse of the minds of Americans is only beginning, as I have indicated for a while:
... it is possible that we are beginning to see the national manifestations of our massive practice of deceit in our nation, because deceit removes reality from the target to be deceived, and not being aware of reality is otherwise known as dementia.

In essence then, when governments, businesses, and those behind them decide to deceive the people "for their own good", they are actually injecting dementia into the populace.

With the massive technologies we have for spreading deceit "through the air waves", we can even say that the disease has become airborne, which usually strikes terror into the hearts of the Center For Disease Control, because that brings on pandemics of the untreatable kind.

But there are obviously times when entire nations "go crazy", and do strange things. Things like attacking other nations for no sound reason, or becoming inexplicably belligerent, or the like.

There is a large amount of data indicating that the amygdala, a particular structure in the brain, is strongly involved during the learning of "conditioned" fear ... distinct neuronal circuits within the central nucleus of the amygdala ... are specifically involved in acquisition and control of behavioural fear responses ... researchers have recently discovered that ... prolonged activation of this defense system may lead to emotional disorders.

We don't need no education
We don't need no thought control
No dark sarcasm in the classroom
Teachers leave them kids alone
Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!

We have noted that the primary thrust of this series is a focus on the dementia of cultures, societies, or civilizations, rather than a focus on the essence of individual forms of dementia, except of course, where those forms are indistinguishable in some significant way.

For a spark of clarity, let me first say that one example of "social dementia" would be a well known social dynamic called "social darwinism", which is touched upon from another angle in the Dredd Blog post "Ayn Rand: Patron Saint of The Plutocracy."

So then, don't these factors beg the question, "why don't the people know about this?", which leads to the answer: epic propaganda programs designed to deceive the people.

The damage in the form of dementia has been done, and still is being done to the U.S. citizenry.

“There will be, in the next generation or so, a pharmacological method of making people love their servitude, and producing dictatorship without tears, so to speak, producing a kind of painless concentration camp for entire societies, so that people will in fact have their liberties taken away from them, but will rather enjoy it, because they will be distracted from any desire to rebel by propaganda or brainwashing, or brainwashing enhanced by pharmacological methods. And this seems to be the final revolution.”

"It is critical for people with dementia and their families to receive information, care, and support as early as possible. To help family members and health care professionals recognize warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has developed this checklist of common symptoms."

Some observers see this dementia originating in the early 20th century when government or those behind government perceived a need to control the people, but realized that they could not do it by physical means.

Thus they took to propaganda in an effort to control the minds rather than use physical control.

Eventually this led to a mega-industry of businesses whose function was to deceive the people into believing something other than the truth of events occurring around them.

This series is about the paranoia that begins with the official propaganda of fear, then spreads through the entire society.

With damaging results.

Today we take a look at the impact of paranoia on our national government.

The case we look at is one where the minds of officials become so warped and blinded they act as if they were carelessly firing into a crowd of innocent people.

Evidence also seems to indicate that the leaders of a superpower, when not countered by another major power, when lacking an arms race to run or territory and influence to contest, may be particularly susceptible to the growth of delusional thinking, and in particular to fantasies of omnipotence.

Just as still water is a breeding ground for mosquitos, so single-superpowerdom seems to be a breeding ground for delusion. This is a phenomenon about which we have to be cautious, since we know little enough about it and are, of course, in its midst. But so far, there seem to have been three stages to the development of whatever delusional process is underway.

... no one can look at Planet Earth today and not see that the single superpower, while capable of creating instability and chaos, is limited indeed in its ability to control developments.  Its president can't even form a "coalition of the willing" to launch a limited series of missile attacks on the military facilities of the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.  From Latin America to the Greater Middle East, the American system is visibly weakening, while at home, inequality and poverty are on the rise, infrastructure crumbles, and national politics is in a state of permanent “gridlock.”

Such a world should be fantastical enough for the wildest sort of dystopian fiction, for perhaps a novel titled 2014. What, after all, are we to make of a planet with a single superpower that lacks genuine enemies of any significance and that, to all appearances, has nonetheless been fighting a permanent global war with ... well, itself -- and appears to be losing?

This series has been about the government and business miscalculating the detrimental impact that their propaganda has on the public.

They evidently do not think that using misinformation, lies, and other forms of propaganda to control and manipulate the public has an adverse impact on the public.

Let's hope that is the case, instead of the alternative, which would be that they deliberately damage the minds of the populace with falsehood.

And with regard to any therapeutic application of our knowledge, what would be the use of the most acute analysis of social neuroses, since no one possesses power to compel the community to adopt the therapy? In spite of all these difficulties, we may expect that one day someone will venture upon this research into the pathology of civilized communities.

The GOP has been driving their people crazy for a long time, now they turn on a dime and want them to become sane all of a sudden.

This when it is seemingly too late.

What would it matter anyway?

Is it the Iraq or Libya murderous frenzies that they have done in our sight driving us over the edge?

Clue: they have been this way "forever," and will only get worse (S.Ct Eugenics).

There is a spot-on methaphor which applies (Iraqi Dam danger).

The bottom line is that civilization is, like Greenland and Antarctica, melting from deep down rather than all at the surface.

And like America, is also melting from "the everywhere."

It is exactly because the epigovernment that rules us, has it exactly wrong:
THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society.

Our invisible governors are, in many cases, unaware of the identity of their fellow members in the inner cabinet.

They govern us by their qualities of natural leadership, their ability to supply needed ideas and by their key position in the social structure. Whatever attitude one chooses to take toward this condition, it remains a fact that in almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons — a trifling fraction of our hundred and twenty [now 320] million — who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind, who harness old social forces and contrive new ways to bind and guide the world.

The Harm Oil-Qaeda Has Done

Regular readers know that for years Dredd Blog has tracked down and followed the trail of Oil-Qaeda (The Authoritarianism of Climate Change, Oil-Qaeda: The Deadliest Parasite Of Civilization, 2; Oil-Qaeda: The Indictment, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Oil-Qaeda: The Weakening?; Terrarists; The Peak of the Oil Lies, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

The purpose was to expose its conspiracy to commit depraved heart murder (DHM) against civilization (Oil-Qaeda & MOMCOM Conspire To Commit Depraved-Heart Murder, 2, 3; MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact, 2, 3, 4, 5).

There is no meaningful distinction between DHM and extinction, other than the fact that there is a statute of limitations on extinction (The Extinction of Charleston, ... Philadelphia, ... Washington, D.C., ... Robust Sea Ports, ... Boston, ... Miami, ... Manzanillo, ... Houston, ... Providence, ... Chesapeake Bay Islands).

Oil-Qaeda is the largest psychopathic-meme-complex in history, exhibiting all of the maladjusted behavioural characteristics of individual psychopaths, but doing so in concert as a group:
In 1977, [Oil-Qaeda] scientists began to discuss the threat of disruptive climate change as a direct result of the burning of fossil fuels. The [private empire] launched cutting-edge research into the effects that carbon dioxide emissions would have on the climate. Based on that research, [Oil-Qaeda] scientists warned [Oil-Qaeda] leadership that carbon dioxide emissions would warm the planet, with potentially catastrophic repercussions.

Rather than accept what their own scientists were saying, top executives at [Oil-Qaeda] started a massive campaign of disinformation. By 1997, the chief executive of [Oil-Qaeda], Lee Raymond, was publicly claiming that the connection between human activities and climate change was inconclusive and uncertain. Forbes magazine wrote that Raymond “used his executive chair as a platform for espousing his disbelief in global warming.”

[Oil-Qaeda] created advertisements that contradicted its own research on global warming. The [private empire] funded the Global Climate Coalition, an organization of [criminally conspiring] companies dedicated to derailing government efforts to slash emissions from fossil fuels.

[Oil-Qaeda] also spent millions of dollars in the form of political campaign donations, lobbying fees and public relations strategies to discredit climate science and disrupt any forceful state or federal action to cut carbon dioxide emissions. The [private empire] also supported think tanks that attempted to discredit climate science and scientists.

In 2001, [Oil-Qaeda] lobbyists helped convince President George W. Bush to pull out of the Kyoto Protocol. By 2006, the [private empire] was funneling tens of millions of dollars to at least 43 organizations dedicated to discrediting climate science. [Oil-Qaeda] opposed historic climate and energy legislation such as the American Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the Waxman-Markey Bill. The measure died in the Senate in 2009.
(The Harm Exxon Mobil Has Done, emphasis added). It does not matter which way we look at it, the bottom line is that Oil-Qaeda, through its deception, is the force of cognition that has led civilization to the brink (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

Regular readers know that Oil-Qaeda likes to remind us that it is "not an American company" (MOMCOM: The Private Parts, 2, 3, 4, 5).

I like to remind Oil-Qaeda that where it makes its bed does not matter, what matters is the will or lack thereof of officials charged with prosecuting crimes against the United States (Follow The Immunity, 2, 3).

The corruption of officials has been the mainstay of Oil-Qaeda, and still is to this very day.

Until that changes, extinction gets closer each day.

The Authoritarianism of Climate Change

I. Introduction

Today we will explore the impact of Authoritarianism on global warming induced climate change.

Specifically, I want to talk about how toxins of power impair and then impel officials to conduct their official business in a way that is suicidal to themselves, while at the same time being murderous toward their constituencies.

In its modern form, within our technological Petroleum Civilization, the principles are the same as with the many societies down through history that did the same thing ad nauseum:
"In other words, a society does not ever die 'from natural causes', but always dies from suicide or murder --- and nearly always from the former, as this chapter has shown."
(A Study of History,  by Arnold J. Toynbee, emphasis added). But, there is a difference between long gone historical civilizations and our civilization.

One difference that is germane to today's post is that with all of the power of weapons of mass destruction (e.g. oil derrick), and their power to destroy The Global Climate System, modern Petroleum Civilization has the capacity to utterly destroy itself along with the human species itself:
If the evolution of civilization has such a far reaching similarity with the development of an individual, and if the same methods are employed in both, would not the diagnosis be justified that many systems of civilization——or epochs of it——possibly even the whole of humanity——have become neurotic under the pressure of the civilizing trends? To analytic dissection of these neuroses, therapeutic recommendations might follow which could claim a great practical interest. I would not say that such an attempt to apply psychoanalysis to civilized society would be fanciful or doomed to fruitlessness. But it behooves us to be very careful, not to forget that after all we are dealing only with analogies, and that it is dangerous, not only with men but also with concepts, to drag them out of the region where they originated and have matured. The diagnosis of collective neuroses, moreover, will be confronted by a special difficulty. In the neurosis of an individual we can use as a starting point the contrast presented to us between the patient and his environment which we assume to be normal. No such background as this would be available for any society similarly affected; it would have to be supplied in some other way. And with regard to any therapeutic application of our knowledge, what would be the use of the most acute analysis of social neuroses, since no one possesses power to compel the community to adopt the therapy? In spite of all these difficulties, we may expect that one day someone will venture upon this research into the pathology of civilized communities. [p. 39]

Thus, a statement by Friedrich Nietzsche has come to fruition: “Insanity in individuals is something rare – but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.”

II. Some Reference Material

To analyze this situation (in terms of how could a civilization, which is considered by itself to be the most advanced in human history, allow such an eventuality), I will reference some helpful and easy-to-obtain material.

One book I will use for reference is The Authoritarians, PDF, by Bob Altemeyer of the University of Manitoba.

Another primary source, an article that sheds light on the subject is: Love and Stockholm Syndrome: The Mystery of Loving an Abuser.

III. The Stage

Scientists have been warning officials for over a century about the dangers inherent in damaging the global climate system  (The Exceptional American Denial).

Their warnings have been, and still are, about how the use of fossil fuels, products of the international oil industry, have been causing, and will continue to cause, the Earth to warm then heat up to the point of catastrophe.

Officials have consistently ignored those warnings to the point that catastrophic events are quite frequent now (Civilization Is Now On Suicide Watch, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8).

IV. The Task at Hand For This Post

The task for today's post is to grab hold of, and then take a look at, the dynamics influencing and controlling officials, and the dynamics influencing and controlling the citizenry.

That will entail three events: 1) separating the bad from the good, 2) weighing the good and the bad, and 3) noting the difference in "Stockholm Syndrome" sufferers as being only a matter of degree, that distinguishes them from general "authoritarian followers."

V. The Personalities and Players

The following descriptions come from the book "The Authoritarians", and are identified by a page number following the description.

But first, note this information about the degree to which each personality type has been studied:
"We know an awful lot about authoritarian followers. In one way or another, hundreds of social scientists have studied them since World War II. We have a pretty good idea of who they are, where they come from, and what makes them tick. By comparison, we know little about authoritarian leaders because we only recently started studying them. That may seem strange, but how hard is it to figure out why someone would like to have massive amounts of power? The psychological mystery has always been, why would someone prefer a dictatorship to freedom? So social scientists have focused on the followers, who are seen as the main, underlying problem."
(p. 2, emphasis added). You can see that knowing more about the least powerful, while knowing less about the most powerful, is problematic (About Toxins Of Power).

A. Authoritarian Followers

The authoritarian followers are not necessarily average working class or middle class citizens.

More likely, they are officials who just want to get their pay check and avoid any and all trouble:
"Authoritarian followers usually support the established authorities in their society, such as government officials and traditional religious leaders. Such people have historically been the “proper” authorities in life, the time-honored, entitled, customary leaders, and that means a lot to most authoritarians.
...
Psychologically these followers have personalities featuring:
1) a high degree of submission to the established, legitimate authorities in their society;

2) high levels of aggression in the name of their authorities; and

3) a high level of conventionalism.
... he’s someone who readily submits to the established authorities in society, attacks others in their name, and is highly conventional. It’s an aspect of his personality, not a description of his politics."
 (p. 9). The key for understanding authoritarian followers is that they have a strong desire not to "rock the boat" in whatever social situation they inhabit.

B. Authoritarian Leaders

You can't have a follower until you first have a leader to follow.

Thus, if we want to get to the core problem with authoritarianism, we must go to and deal with the authoritarian leaders: 
"The “soundness” of their [authoritarian leaders] thinking hardly means you can believe them, however. They are quite capable of saying whatever will get them ahead. After all, they hold that there’s no such thing as “right” and “wrong.” It all boils down to what you can get away with. And one of the most useful skills a person should develop, they say, is how to look someone straight in the eye and lie convincingly."
(p. 170, emphasis added). In Eastern thought, where Daoism / Taoism variants are more abundant, the same holds true in yin/yang subgroups:
"In Daoist metaphysics, distinctions between good and bad, along with other dichotomous moral judgments, are perceptual, not real; so, the duality of yin and yang is an indivisible whole." (Yin and Yang)
...
"Shame and guilt are illusions" (Taoism and Guilt or Shame)
Thus, we see that the two work as a sort of self-reinforcing whole, which can make them more difficult to distinguish.

C. Both

I want the authoritarianism phenomenon to be envisioned, in the context of this post, by using the concept of "epigovernment" as authoritarian leader and the concept of "government" as authoritarian follower (Epigovernment: The New Model - 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

So, we can see how this dynamic works hand and glove, and in the tradition of [Toxins of Power] blog, that dynamic would have been engendered by some power toxin that operates within the confines of power to cause some initial corruption that eventually grew like a cancer.

It is important to remember that authoritarianism is also a mutual dynamic, built of both parts like yin and yang, leader and follower:
"Authoritarianism is something authoritarian followers and authoritarian leaders cook up between themselves. It happens when the followers submit too much to the leaders, trust them too much, and give them too much leeway to do whatever they want -- which often is something undemocratic, tyrannical and brutal."
(p. 2, emphasis added). That takes place at an early stage of the evolution of the tyranny, but it eventually evolves into "if I want your opinion I will beat it out of you."

Whatever the power toxin is, which causes that evolutionary leap of lapse in judgment, the antidote available all along the way is well known.

That antidote is essential to democracy all along the way, and is called "accountability" (When Accountability Is A Plague, 2, 3).

D. Stockholm Syndrome Sufferers

The Stockholm Syndrome is next, which in my mind at this time is just an extreme degree of the authoritarian follower described earlier:
"On August 23rd, 1973 two machine-gun carrying criminals entered a bank in Stockholm, Sweden. Blasting their guns, one prison escapee named Jan-Erik Olsson announced to the terrified bank employees “The party has just begun!” The two bank robbers held four hostages, three women and one man, for the next 131 hours. The hostages were strapped with dynamite and held in a bank vault until finally rescued on August 28th.

After their rescue, the hostages exhibited a shocking attitude considering they were threatened, abused, and feared for their lives for over five days. In their media interviews, it was clear that they supported their captors and actually feared law enforcement personnel who came to their rescue. The hostages had begun to feel the captors were actually protecting them from the police. One woman later became engaged to one of the criminals and another developed a legal defense fund to aid in their criminal defense fees. Clearly, the hostages had “bonded” emotionally with their captors.

While the psychological condition in hostage situations became known as “Stockholm Syndrome” due to the publicity, the emotional “bonding” with captors was a familiar story in psychology. It had been recognized many years before and was found in studies of other hostage, prisoner, or abusive situations such as:
  • Abused Children
  • Battered/Abused Women
  • Prisoners of War
  • Cult Members
  • Incest Victims
  • Criminal Hostage Situations
  • Concentration Camp Prisoners
  • Controlling/Intimidating Relationships
In the final analysis, emotionally bonding with an abuser is actually a strategy for survival for victims of abuse and intimidation. The “Stockholm Syndrome” reaction in hostage and/or abuse situations is so well recognized at this time that police hostage negotiators no longer view it as unusual. In fact, it is often encouraged in crime situations as it improves the chances for survival of the hostages."
(Love and Stockholm Syndrome: The Mystery of Loving an Abuser). Those authoritarian followers, who merely lick the boots of authoritarian leaders, go all "Stockholm Syndrome on steroids" on us at times.

Note that Stockholm Syndrome does not work as a survival mechanism in the context of climate change.

In fact, it works toward the opposite result, the absence of survival (a.k.a. extinction).

VI. The Creator of Climate Change: Oil-Qaeda

A. The Precursor to Oil-Qaeda

For the context of this post, one of the notable dynamics of culture, which the industrial revolution (that began circa 1750) fostered, was a resurgent and growing trust of business on the part of government officials.

Whiz-bang gadgetry and industrial prowess promised many a commodity which were carte blanche perceived of as bricks with which to build a better lifestyle.

This unfortunately broke down some social barriers that certainly should not have been taken down, accountability being one of them.

The old adage of governance "the king can do no wrong" had been rejected in the revolution whereby the United States came into being (Sovereign Immunity Source: Toxins of Power?).

Independence, and the resistance to the wrongs of the king, was the result of rejecting "the king can do no wrong" (The Unanimous Declaration, Independence From What, 2).

Independence was also a rejection of authoritarianism, especially the configuration that works within the mold of feudalism (American Feudalism, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11).

B. The Flip Flop

A new philosophy eventually developed during the new industrial revolution, a philosophy that was "secretly" growing, but it was a philosophy that was the opposite direction from the aforementioned sentiments of the revolution.

The American political revolution had rejected the notion that "the king can do no wrong", replacing it with "the people can do no wrong."

Nevertheless, the industrial revolution began to engender sentiments that would replace "the king" with a neo-feudal type of neo-plutocracy (Plutocracy).

It manifested as a "collective king" which was composed of "those who know best."

It was well hidden "in plain site" in some senses, but was also unabashedly proclaimed publicly in a 1928 American book:
THE conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society.
Edward L. Bernays

Our invisible governors are, in many cases, unaware of the identity of their fellow members in the inner cabinet.

They govern us by their qualities of natural leadership, their ability to supply needed ideas and by their key position in the social structure. Whatever attitude one chooses to take toward this condition, it remains a fact that in almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons — a trifling fraction of our hundred and twenty [now 320] million — who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind, who harness old social forces and contrive new ways to bind and guide the world.

It is the purpose of this book to explain the structure of the mechanism which controls the public mind, and to tell how it is manipulated by the special pleader who seeks to create public acceptance for a particular idea or commodity. It will attempt at the same time to find the due place in the modern democratic scheme for this new propaganda and to suggest its gradually evolving code of ethics and practice.

Eventually, the propaganda industry (public relations,  PR "spin") became the mouthpiece of authoritarian leaders and followers.

That propaganda industry was the way to interface with the growing consumer society, the public.

That new PR business was great for both the authoritarian leaders and the authoritarian followers, and it is still a vast and wealthy business today (The Deceit Business).

C. Oil-Qaeda Forever To The Rescue

By the time of WW II, Oil-Qaeda had inexorably risen to become a new offspring swaddled in the arms of the state:
John D. Rockefeller, in his 1909 Random Reminiscences of Men and Events, recalled, "One of our greatest helpers has been the State Department. Our ambassadors and ministers and consuls have aided to push our way into new markets in the utmost corners of the world." But he left out a key explanation for the government's interest. Standard Oil was the biggest U.S. company, putting a hundred ships to sea, buying and selling oil in Latin America, Germany, and the Far East. It also operated a global intelligence system. "By 1885," according to one historian, "seventy percent of the Standard's business was overseas and it had its own network of agents through the world, and its own espionage service, to forestall the initiatives of rival companies or governments."
(American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of ..., emphasis added). By way of its mouthpieces in the propaganda industry, Oil-Qaeda eventually firmly implanted itself into the soul of western culture and civilization.

It was religiously done in a way we can clearly still see working today:
"The enemy aggressor is always pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism. We are always moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate our victims, while incidentally capturing their markets; to civilise savage and senile and paranoid peoples, while blundering accidentally into their oil wells or metal mines."
(As We Go Marching, by John T. Flynn, 1944, p. 222, emphasis added). Yes, we are still "always moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate" that mid-eastern "enemy aggressor [that] is always pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism," and we still blunder "accidentally into their oil wells."

The scene of all that barbarism, which our mission regenerates, is in the middle east where most of "our oil" was considered to be in those days: 
"Long before politicians mewled helplessly about the power of “Big Oil”, carbon-based fuels were shaping our very political, legal, intellectual, and physical structures.
...
For instance, the invasion of Iraq in 2003 was a pivotal moment in America’s strategic outlook. America, a global hegemon whose empire was weakening, seized the second largest oil deposits in the world as a way of preventing its economic and political decline.
...
The last declining global hegemon, Great Britain, also engaged in a brutal and highly controversial British occupation of Iraq, in the 1920s, pressed aggressively by the well-known British conservative, Winston Churchill." - (Book Review of "Carbon Democracy", emphasis added)

"From the moment he arrived at the Admiralty, a young man of destiny, Churchill started to prepare the fleet for the Battle of Armageddon he believed was inevitable." - (John McCain's Book About Churchill, emphasis added)

"Then, in 1911, the German Kaiser provoked the Agadir crisis ... Churchill went to the Admiralty and his outlook transformed. He was immediately confronted with the decisive question: to convert the navy from coal to oil ... the "fateful plunge" was made ... in April 1912 ... five oil-burning battleships were approved.
...
Britain was well supplied with coal [but not oil]. It was the Royal Navy which was the impetus for the development of the oil industry in Britain. The problem was supply and the security of that supply. Initially, the British government purchased shares in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, subsequently, British Petroleum [BP]." - (Winston S. Churchill, by Eugene L. Rasor, p. 157-58)

"Then, to prevent further disruptions, Britain enmeshed itself ever more deeply in the Middle East, working to install new shahs in Iran and carve Iraq out of the collapsing Ottoman Empire.

Churchill fired the starting gun, but all of the Western powers joined the race to control Middle Eastern oil." (What If We Never Run Out of Oil, emphasis added)
The middle east right now, in the gulf between Iran on one shore, Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the other shore, has armies, navies, and air forces marshalled.

Those marshalled military entities have enough fire-power to destroy human civilization several times over.

In other words, more than at any other time in history:
The 5th Fleet together with troops are in the Middle East where there is lots of oil.

The 4th Fleet has been reactivated after 58 years of being moth balled, and has been sent to Central / South America where there is also lots of oil.

A website of the federal government tells us:
"Oil is the lifeblood of America’s economy."
(Department of Energy [they removed it, so here is The Wayback Machine copy of that page: Department of Energy]). Which is the same thing as saying you are economically dead without your blood, your oil.

The struggle for economic life then, would be the struggle for oil would it not?
(The Fleets and Terrorism Follow The Oil). The Private Empire (a.k.a. Oil-Qaeda) has surgically inserted itself into American cultural DNA, like the HIV virus does to an individual's DNA.

After inserting itself with skilful nano-surgery, the enemy virus is seen as part of its victim (MOMCOM: The Private Parts, 2, 3, 4, 5).

D. The Addiction That Oil-Qaeda Masterminded

Our culture is now a war-for-oil culture (a Wartocracy), busy at work in over a thousand military bases around the world (MOMCOM: A Mean Welfare Queen).

Whereby they are converting "the enemy aggressor" that is always "pursuing a course of larceny, murder, rapine and barbarism", so that our culture can always be "moving forward with high mission, a destiny imposed by the Deity to regenerate our victims, while incidentally capturing their markets; to civilise savage and senile and paranoid peoples, while blundering accidentally into their oil wells or metal mines" (ibid, from the book "As We Go Marching").

Consequently, a recent president, firmly implanted within Oil-Qaeda, unabashedly proclaimed that "we" are addicted to oil (Glorious Addictions - War & Oil, 2).

VII. How Do You Feel About Oil-Qaeda?

Are you an authoritarian leader, authoritarian follower, Stockholm syndrome sufferer, or a healthy citizen who wants Oil-Qaeda brought to justice?

There are movements around the world that see the need for justice, the need for accountability, to be applied to Oil-Qaeda:
Top lawyers put fossil fuel bosses on trial in the UK's supreme court in a mock case to explore the crime of ecocide - environmental destruction - which is being considered by the UN ... It's a grim list: genocide, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression (such as unprovoked invasions) and war crimes. All are recognised by the UN as crimes against peace and prosecuted through the international criminal court.

But should the bosses of polluting companies and the leaders of environmentally-unfriendly states join those responsible for mass murder in the dock. They could if a fifth crime against peace - ecocide - joined that list of human evils? The United Nations is now considering the proposal and the first test of how a prosecution for ecocide would work takes place on Friday, with fossil fuel bosses in the dock at the UK supreme court in London. It is a mock trial of course, but with real top-flight lawyers and judges and a jury made up of members of the public. The corporate CEOs will be played by actors briefed by their legal teams.
(Is 'Insanity' A Valid Defense To Ecocide?, emphasis addedl cf. 2, 3). Should we not do that but rather follow the beliefs of Oil-Qaeda and Yin Yang, and believe that both "shame and guilt are illusions"?

VIII. Conclusion

Global warming induced climate change is not a victimless dynamic.

All of human civilization and non-human species are endangered (MOMCOM's Mass Suicide & Murder Pact - 5, 4, 3, 2, 1).

Endangered by what Oil-Qaeda has deliberately done, and then lied about it over the past century or so:
Internal fossil fuel industry memos reveal decades of disinformation — a deliberate campaign to deceive the public that continues even today.

For nearly three decades, many of the world's largest fossil fuel companies have knowingly worked to deceive the public about the realities and risks of climate change.

Their deceptive tactics are now highlighted in this set of seven "deception dossiers"—collections of internal company and trade association documents that have either been leaked to the public, come to light through lawsuits, or been disclosed through Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests.

Each collection provides an illuminating inside look at this coordinated campaign of deception, an effort underwritten by ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, BP, Shell, Peabody Energy, and other members of the fossil fuel industry.
(Union of Concerned Scientists: The climate deception dossiers). The first sentence in that quote contains the statement "a deliberate campaign to deceive the public that continues even today."

That statement is bolstered by very recent evaluations of some of the pseudo-science which they fund (Learning from mistakes in climate research, PDF).

Another Spring of Whores of War

On this date in 2009 the poppies for making heroin were standing tall in Afghanistan once again.

Prior to that the Taliban had eradicated the poppy / heroin trade, which must have angered traffickers in the CIA.

AIG was trafficking in many things in Afghanistan and Iraq, including bail-out money.

An official of the Bush II administration was sent to prison for Iraq money laundering.

Republicans were messing with elections and being criminally prosecuted for it.

War was in every Pentagon official's blood then, so look over the posts at Dredd Blog on this date in 2009, then compare them to what is in every Pentagon official's blood today on the first day of spring:
“Russia has increased its [defence] budget but let me remind you that you have an ally [U.S.eh?] that has a [war] budget ten times larger than the next ten nations in the world,” said Mr Biden.
(Economist, cf. The Blaze). He ended with "may God protect our troops" (Whitehouse Press Office).

They are still singing that God on our Side thingy.

First Day of Spring 2009

Spring means different things to different people.

The winter of poppy cultivation had come to Afghanistan shortly before 2001.

On October 7, 2001, military strikes against Afghanistan were launched by the United States and an international coalition that included Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Germany and France.

The poppy cultivation had been almost completely removed from Afghan culture by the time that the invasion took place.

It did not take long for Afghan poppy cultivation to spring up again. By 2002 the spring of poppy cultivation was returning strong.

By 2006 Afghanistan was leading the world in poppy cultivation once again:
U.N. figures to be released in September are expected to show that Afghanistan's poppy production has risen up to 15 percent since 2006 and that the country now accounts for 95 percent of the world's crop, 3 percentage points more than last year, officials familiar with preliminary statistics told The Associated Press.
(Washington Post). An increase in heroin addiction and drug wars was the inevitable result.

AIG Liquidity Corporation & Family

We have been doing a series on the AIG family of corporations. The Banque, the international, and the one in the spotlight.

According to SEC filings, AIG Liquidity Corp. was created in 1992 as a Delaware corporation. It was a subsidiary to AIG.

That SEC filing says all capital stock is initially owned by AIG which was shown as a money making business ("AIG and its consolidated subsidiaries"), an average of 3.53 pct. "ratio of earnings to fixed charges" from 1998 to June 30, 2003.

A later SEC Filing in 2004 repeats those figures, and sets forth PricewaterhouseCooper as experts on that issue. Other online sources show the optimism continued through 2006.

After Greenberg was ousted from the company in 2007 and J.J. Cassano was put in the lead of the financial products division, things began to change.

Cassano, among other things, discontinued the hedging that Greenberg had kept in place. That means that a major shield of protection was removed.

Perhaps Cassano really did believe his own smoke that the shield was not needed:
"It is hard for us, without being flippant, to even see a scenario within any kind of [rhyme] or reason that would see us losing one dollar in any of those transactions," he told investors.
(Out on the False Front, Daily News link). But it was not too very long before reality burned through the smoke and Moody was downgrading AIG:
New York, September 15, 2008 -- Moody's Investors Service has downgraded the senior unsecured debt rating of American Internation Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) to A2 from Aa3 in light of the continuing deterioration in the US housing market and the consequent impact on the group's liquidity and capital position due to its related investment and derivitive exposures. The company's long-term and Prime-1 short-term ratings were placed on review for possible further downgrade.
(Moody's Notice, pdf). This shows the danger inherent in business propaganda. Those who practice it are eventually caught in its web and they can't get out.

Election Officials' Lack of Integrity

In Clay County, Kentucky, the election officials were evidently corrupted by the toxins within power.

A federal grand jury has indicted them for election crimes. A spokesman for the Kentucky state government stated:
“The allegations as detailed in the U.S. Attorney’s indictments, if found to be true, represent a great injustice to the citizens of Clay County. Our office appreciates the U.S. Attorney taking these allegations seriously and working with us to rid our state of election fraud. Our office cooperated with authorities on this matter, including referring voting irregularities from the 2006 primary elections to law enforcement officials. We hope that the judicial system will work expeditiously on this matter so that the dark cloud of suspicion hanging over these elections will not affect future elections.”

AIG Iraq

From previous articles it is clear that AIG is a company that is not afraid to try new things.

Look at AIG Global Marine @ Iraq for example. Or other AIG endeavors in Iraq.

AIG has advertised that it has extensive capacity to handle many Iraq reconstruction and other financial endeavours.

It is interesting that this information is found on Iraq Coalition Org website:
AIG member companies have the capacity and expertise to handle the insurance needs of contractors and companies doing business in Iraq. There will be a variety of unique coverages needed in this effort. Listed below are some of the core coverages AIG member companies can provide. A more extensive list of products and services can be provided as individually required.
(Iraq Coalition, PDF). It must have worried AIG to know that that area of Iraqi "business endeavours" landed some Bush II officials in prison for a long time:
Bob Stein, the comptroller of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, received the longest sentence of any Bush official (as of yet) - nine years in prison for money laundering, conspiracy and bribery ... some of the money ... was cash in suitcases ...
(BBC, Wikipedia). And they must have been especially concerned to find that their bonus payments of $165 million, which drove the USA crazy, is dwarfed by Iraq reconstruction fraud that would shame even Bernie Madoff:
In what could turn out to be the greatest fraud in US history, American authorities have started to investigate the alleged role of senior military officers in the misuse of $125bn (£88bn) in a US -directed effort to reconstruct Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The exact sum missing may never be clear, but a report by the US Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) suggests it may exceed $50bn, making it an even bigger theft than Bernard Madoff's notorious Ponzi scheme.
(British Independent). Yes, to be associated with large scale business endeavors in such a fraud rich environment, especially since they have banks in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Switzerland, was surely something they avoided like the plague.

That may not be the case, however, if the investigation of AIG's charges to taxpayers for federal contractors in Iraq, including KBR of Haliburton / Cheney "fame".

The Freedom Is Back In FOIA

President Obama and AG Holder have made it clear that the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is once again for real.

In a memorandum sent to all administrative agencies AG Holder said:
A Presumption of Openness

As President Obama instructed in his January 21 FOIA Memorandum, "The Freedom of Information Act should be administered with a clear presumption: In the face of doubt, openness prevails." This presumption has two important implications.

First, an agency should not withhold information simply because it may do so legally. I strongly encourage agencies to make discretionary disclosures of information. An agency should not withhold records merely because it can demonstrate, as a technical matter, that the records fall within the scope of a FOIA exemption.

Second, whenever an agency determines that it cannot make full disclosure of a requested record, it must consider whether it can make partial disclosure. Agencies should always be mindful that the FOIA requires them to take reasonable steps to segregate and release nonexempt information. Even if some parts of a record must be withheld, other parts either may not be covered by a statutory exemption, or may be covered only in a technical sense unrelated to the actual impact of disclosure.

It is almost sickening to look back at lies and whoredom done in the name of the good people of America, especially when those sick foreign policies are still being implemented by the follow-up Obama Administration.

A Tale of Coup Cities - 8

A writer at the Emptywheel Blog points out that the U.S. statutes and laws, which the military NSA cites to as its authority for spying on all Americans, does not apply to the military NSA.

Instead, those statutes and laws apply only to the civilian FBI.

Those who do not understand that the NSA is a military outfit, and that the FBI is a civilian outfit, may not comprehend the import of this observation --at first.

More of that later, but first let's set the stage for analyzing this astute observation of the blogger emptywheel, by first noticing and discussing the purpose for keeping the military separate from the civilian authorities, in terms of setting both domestic and foreign policy.

And more importantly, keeping the military in subjection to the civilian authorities, an issue that even the emptywheel blogger didn't address.

The emptywheel blogger quotes the FISA statutory language in Section 215:
[T]he Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation or a designee of the Director (whose rank shall be no lower than Assistant Special Agent in Charge) may make an application for an order requiring the production of any tangible things ...
(Empty Wheel, "Wrong Agency ...", cf. The Tell). The argument which emptywheel then makes is that the text of the statute allows only one agency of the federal government to make applications to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC).

Further, that one authorized agency is the civilian FBI, not the military NSA.

Now, why that is important to the point of "what if there was a coup and no one noticed" is the overarching issue in this "A Tale of Coup Cities" Dredd Blog series.

Here at Dredd Blog, as regular readers know, we have isolated and then pointed out writings and declarations by our greatest statesmen who have for hundreds of years warned us about the grave dangers of overindulgence in military thinking.

When that thinking reaches the point of mixing civilian policy with military power and doctrine, the once-free nations that do it tend to cease to exist as free nations (see e.g. The Greatest Source Of Power Toxins?, Beware of The Military Oil Complex).

In the current series, we have pointed out that a coup has taken place over time to the point that our greatest power is no longer civilian democracy bringing common prosperity to the middle class, poor, and wealthy alike.

Rather, we are degenerating into a feudal society guided by a plutocracy of the few (American Feudalism, The Homeland: Big Brother Plutonomy).

First, let's emphasize that the NSA is a military outfit:
In accordance with Department of Defense Directive 5100.20, dated December 23, 1971, the Director of the NSA must always be a commissioned officer of the military services. Because the assignment is currently part of a tri-hatted position, the Director of the NSA is appointed to the grade of a four-star general or admiral during the period of his incumbency. The Deputy Director is always a technically experienced civilian.

The current director is General Keith B. Alexander, USA.

A. Subject to the provisions of NSCID No. 6, and the National Security Act of 1947, as amended, and pursuant to the authorities vested in the Secretary of Defense, the National Security Agency is a separately organized agency within the Department of Defense under the direction, supervision, funding, maintenance and operation of the Secretary of Defense.
...
F. The Director and Deputy Director of the National Security Agency shall be designated by the Secretary of Defense, subject to the approval of the President. The Director shall be a commissioned officer of the military Services, on active or reactivated status, and shall enjoy not less than three star rank during the period of his incumbency.

G. The Director, National Security Agency/ Chief, Central Security Service shall report to the Secretary of Defense.
(On The Origin of Security - 2, quoting "DoDD 5100.20"). The military Department of Defense, the military Pentagon, where the military NSA is located and commanded, is not directed by, commanded by, or overseen by the civilian FBI.

Thus, the military NSA has no authority to ask the FISC for permission to spy on all Americans, or any Americans, under Section 215 of the FISA laws quoted near the top of this post.

Only the civilian FBI is given that statutory authority.

Now, let's discuss why a coup is more often than not a result of mixing military ideology with our civilian constitutional democracy in a manner that skews balance:
Military influence increases when officers assume positions of authority in non-military organizations. Finally, the influence of the officer corps obviously increases when the public possesses a favorable opinion of the military.
(Civilian-Military Relations, p. 35, PDF). Dredd Blog has pointed out that the public possess the most favorable opinion of the military, over any other American institution:
In the first post of this series, we pointed out that most Americans polled in an annual Gallup Poll think that the military is the most competent institution in America.

In that post we perused Gallup Poll figures from 2009, as shown on the graphic to the left (red lines added).

Today in 2011, the military is still seen as the most competent American institution, according to this year's Gallup Poll, even though the wars they are prosecuting are not at all popular.

Let's take a look for reasons and realities as to how it is that the military, once considered the lackey for the tyranny of the tyrants, has come full circle to invade and occupy the hearts of a once freedom loving people.
(Stockholm Syndrome on Steroids? - 2). The second prong of that formula, military officers assuming positions in civilian organizations, for example the appointment of active military officers over the CIA (e.g. Gen. Hayden).

There is also the revolving door between the military Pentagon and war profiteering corporations such as General Electric, Lockheed, Boeing, and on and on.

Today, we considered one military science article "Civilian-Military Relations" which is quoted from and linked to above.

In the next post of this series we will look at traditional military-civilian relationships as depicted in historical books such as "The Soldier and the State", by Samuel P. Huntington, depicted in the graphic at the top-left of this post.

That will be done in order to compare "then" with "now" so as to see if and/or how things have changed, a technique discussed in A Tale of Coup Cities - 4.
