After Ten Years, Sweetness & Light Is Taking ‘A Hiatus’

Where does the time go?

As of Saturday August 15th, S&L will have been laboring in the vineyard that is the internet for a full ten years. So I am taking a little break. Maybe even a big break. I will keep you posted.

I want to thank the extended S&L family for your interest and comments and generous financial support over the years.

Thank you all very much. And the best of wishes to you and our country.

Sketch Of Tom Brady Draws Apology From ‘Court Artist’

In the NYT piece on this, the artist said (paraphrasing) ‘that it’s harder to draw celebrities, because people know what they look like.’

From the New York Daily News:

Ugly courtroom sketch of Tom Brady goes viral and draws an apology from artist Jane Rosenberg

By Stephen Rex Brown, Larry Mcshane | August 12, 2015

Welcome to Deface-gate. A courtroom artist’s hideous depiction of a troll-faced Tom Brady triggered a Wednesday outpouring of internet invective — and an apology from the woman responsible for the sketch. “Tell Tom Brady I’m sorry,” said Jane Rosenberg, a courtroom artist for 35 years. “He’s a very good-looking man. I apologize. If I had more time, I would have made him more handsome.”

Brady, in court for a Deflategate hearing, couldn’t have looked any uglier.

CNN Poll: Trump Best With Issues, Mostly Likely To Win

Apparently Trump represents hope and change — or at least hope for change — to a lot of Republicans.

From a gobsmacked CNN:

CNN / ORC Poll: Trump tops in Iowa as Scott Walker drops

By Jennifer Agiesta | August 12, 2015

Washington (CNN) — Donald Trump has a significant lead in the race to win over likely Iowa caucus-goers, according to the first CNN/ORC poll in the state this cycle. Trump tops the field with 22% and is the candidate seen as best able to handle top issues including the economy, illegal immigration and terrorism. He’s most cited as the one with the best chance of winning the general election, and, by a wide margin, as the candidate most likely to change the way things work in Washington.

WH: Defunding Planned Parenthood ‘Could Break Law’

Notice how quickly the White House has stepped in here to stop the states from defunding of Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, the Obama White House has yet to say one word against PP selling baby parts for profit. Why is that?

From The Hill:

WH warns states: Defunding Planned Parenthood might break law

By Peter Sullivan | August 12, 2015

The Obama administration has warned Louisiana and Alabama that they could be violating federal law by cutting off Planned Parenthood from their states’ Medicaid programs.

Would this be a good time to ask if ‘sanctuary cities’ don’t violate federal law?

The Republican governors in both states this month terminated their state Medicaid contracts with the organization in the wake of controversial undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood officials discussing the price of fetal tissue for medical research.

Fournier: Lack Of Classification Is A Laughable Excuse

Fournier finally points out that it is nonsense for Hillary to claim the classified material wasn’t marked. He also points out that the elites don’t like her, and the low information types don’t like her.

From Breitbart:

Fournier: Clinton ‘Stone Wall Is Crumbling,’ ‘Ridiculous’ To Say She Volunteered Server

By Ian Hanchett | August 12, 2015

National Journal Senior Political Columnist Ron Fournier argued that Hillary Clinton’s “stone wall is crumbling” and that claims that she “voluntarily” turned over her server are “patently, obviously ridiculous” on Wednesday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Special Report.” Fournier said, “this is Groundhog Day.

The parsing that we saw there, the deception we saw there, the victimization we saw there, it goes back to Arkansas. Now, some of those charges over the years haven’t been true.

The Hill: Democrats In Panic Mode Over Hillary Emails

What has taken them so long? Don’t they follow the news?

From The Hill:

Dems near Clinton panic mode

By Niall Stanage and Kevin Cirilli | 08/13/15

Democrats are worried that the furor over Hillary Clinton’s private email server will be prolonged and intensified after her sudden move to hand it to the FBI. The Clinton campaign’s decision to give up the server and a thumb-drive containing back-up copies of emails left Democrats scratching their heads as to why the former secretary of State had resisted turning over the server for months.

Could it be that she was waiting for some sign from the DOJ that they would protect her? (Cf. their walk back of what they originally told the NYT.)

Coupled with new polls that suggest Clinton is vulnerable, Democrats are nearing full-on panic mode.

FBI Has Hillary’s Server (After The Data’s Been Wiped!)

For some odd reason the WP doesn’t get around to mentioning that all of the data has been removed from the server until their ninth paragraph.

From the Washington Post:

Hillary Clinton’s e-mail server turned over to FBI

By Tom Hamburger and Karen Tumulty | August 12, 2015

The e-mail server used by Hillary Rodham Clinton when she served as secretary of state was turned over to the FBI late Wednesday afternoon from a private data center in New Jersey, according to an attorney familiar with the transfer. “It was picked up about 4 p.m.,” said Barbara J. Wells, a Denver lawyer who represents Platte River Networks Inc., a small computer services firm that has managed the Clintons’ private e-mail system since mid-2013.

Does Platte River do degaussing?

Fidel: US Owes Cuba Millions In Reparations For Embargo

No doubt Kerry will offer to give them a down payment on all the money that we owe them, when he visits on Friday.

From the Agence France Press:

Fidel Castro to US: you owe us millions

August 13, 2015

Havana (AFP) – Fidel Castro marked his 89th birthday Thursday by insisting the United States owes Cuba "many millions of dollars" because of the half-century-old American trade embargo. Castro spoke out in an essay published in local media a day before US Secretary of State John Kerry makes a historic visit to Cuba to reopen the US embassy as part of the countries’ restoration of diplomatic relations.

The trade embargo that the United States slapped on communist Cuba in 1962, three years after Castro seized power by ousting a US-backed regime, remains in effect despite the thawing.

Kerry Won’t Invite Dissidents To US Flag Raising In Cuba

Kerry says he can’t invited dissidents because of ‘protocol.’ Of course, the sad truth is Kerry and Obama don’t want the dissidents invited, because they are on the Castro’s side versus the dissidents.

From the Politico:

Protocol keeps dissidents from Havana flag-raising, John Kerry says

In interview with Telemundo, the secretary of state defends decision not to invite Cuban dissidents to official event.

By Eliza Collins | August 12, 2015

… [John] Kerry is scheduled to travel to Havana for the ceremonial flag-raising following formal resumption of diplomatic relations with Cuba last month. After arrests over the weekend of as many as 100 protesters, the secretary of state came under pressure to include dissidents in the events.

Perhaps the Politico is unaware that the Castro Brothers have been arresting and beating around 100 dissidents every Sunday for a least the last six months.

Obama Sides With Palestinians In Terror Restitution Case

In a nutshell, after an 11 year lawsuit, eleven American families won multi-million judgment against the PLO and PA. Now the Obama administration is urging the court to limit the restitution.

From the Washington Free Beacon:

Obama Admin Moves to Block Restitution for U.S. Terror Victims

By Adam Kredo | August 13, 2015

The Obama administration has intervened in a landmark legal case brought by the American victims of Palestinian terrorists, urging the court to limit restitution for the victims out of fear that a sizable payout could collapse the Palestinian government, according to a copy of the court filing.

Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken argued in a filing to a New York City court that a hefty payout to the victims of Palestinian terror crimes could burden the Palestinian Authority (PA) and interfere in Obama administration efforts to foster peace in the region.

WP: Kerry Falsely Claims Bush Offered Iran A Better Deal

Kerry has gone so over the top with his claims about the Iran deal that even one of the administration’s foremost mouthpieces has to call him out.

From the so-called fact-checker at the Washington Post:

Kerry’s claim that Bush offered Iran ‘way beyond’ what Obama negotiated

"Kerry’s claim that Bush offered Iran ‘way beyond’ what Obama negotiated

By Glenn Kessler | August 13, 2015

“Folks, that is way beyond what we offered, way beyond.” – Secretary of State John F. Kerry, interview at Thomson Reuters headquarters, Aug. 11, 2015. — In making the case for the international deal with Iran to restrain its nuclear ambitions, Secretary of State John F. Kerry has pointed to “a proposal” made in a letter on June 17, 2008, by six foreign ministers, including then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as offering the Islamic republic an agreement that exceeded what the administration agreed to in its deal.

WH Opposes Bill That Would Allow Sanctions ‘Snap Back’

What could be more obvious? Obama wants to strip away the only thing way that Iran could possibly be punished for cheating, at least while he is in office.

From an unfazed Politico:

The second dispute with Congress that could derail Obama’s Iran deal

The White House is resisting lawmakers’ plans to renew the Iran Sanctions Act.

By Nahal Toosi | August 12, 2015

Behind the showdown between President Barack Obama and Congress over the Iran nuclear deal is a second dispute that could cost the White House allies it needs to ensure the agreement survives: Whether and when to renew a key law that imposes sanctions on Tehran.

Under the nuclear deal, Obama would suspend the sanctions imposed by Congress, but the statutes can stay on the books as a safeguard in case Iran reneges and the president needs to “snap” the sanctions back.

Latest PP Video: ‘Parents’ Didn’t Know Organs Were Sold

And, as we have previously noted, Planned Parenthood workers have already basically admitted on the tapes that they change the abortion procedure in order to preserve donor tissues and organs. Which is also against federal law, as well as what their donor forms promise.

From Breitbart:

New Planned Parenthood Video: Parents Didn’t Know Baby Organs Were Sold

By John Hayward | 12 Aug 2015

The latest video from the Center for Medical Progress is not an undercover sting operation, but rather an interview with former blood and tissue procurement technician Holly O’Donnell, who worked for a biotech company called StemExpress… In this video, O’Donnell alleges that such harvesting was often undertaken without the knowledge or consent of the pregnant women.

O’Donnell says that the pressure from her employers to procure valuable fetal tissue made her mission to harvest organs not an “option,” but a “demand.” She charges that techs working Planned Parenthood clinics didn’t always take the time to actually make that demand of the abortion mill’s clients: “If there was a higher gestation, and the technicians needed it, there were times when they would just take what they wanted.

California To Pay For Murderer’s Sex Change Operation

What a great leap forward for civil rights and all the oppressed ‘Shiloh Heavenlys’ in the world.

From CNS News:

California First State to Agree to Pay for Murderer’s Sex-Change Operation

By Margaret Knapp | August 11, 2015

(CNSNews.com) — California has become the first state in the nation to agree to pay for a transgender inmate’s sex-reassignment surgery on the basis of “medical necessity,” according to state medical experts.

Rodney James Quine, 56, who since 1980 has been serving a life sentence without parole for murder, kidnapping and robbery, has been diagnosed with “severe gender dysphoria.”

Last Friday, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) conceded in court that sex-reassignment surgery was the only way to treat Quine’s condition.

A condition nobody had even heard of just a few short years ago.

NYT Trump Gets ‘Mixed News’ In Iowa Poll (Still Leads)

From a silver lining seeking New York Times:

Donald Trump Gets Mixed News in New Iowa Poll

By Alan Rappeport | August 11, 2015

Donald J. Trump’s erratic debate performance last week did not undo his standing as the favorite in Iowa, according to a poll released Tuesday from Suffolk University, but it did damage the confidence that potential Republican caucusgoers have in his ability to be president.

The Suffolk survey found that Mr. Trump has the support of 17 percent of Republicans who plan to caucus in Iowa. Gov. Scott Walker trails him with 12 percent and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida and Ben Carson round out the top tier…

Mr. Walker is from the state next door to Iowa. So this is a pretty good result for Mr.
