EXPECT BIKES

 Kingston, New York

Not clear what is to be expected of them. Something to do with a bike lane on a one way street?

BLM Protests in Southbury

 Southbury, Connecticut

The text of the sign the woman in front is holding reads, "EQUAL RIGHTS FOR OTHERS DOES NOT MEAN LESS RIGHTS FOR YOU. IT'S NOT PIE. BLACK LIVES MATTER.

The fallacy of the zero sum game deserves protest. Lest anyone think there were only five folks here, there were more nearly a hundred, to be seen in more pictures later. It's a large intersection at the center of a 15,000 population bedroom community (formerly farm country) and people were trying to socially distance around the corner a couple hundred feet each way. They told me it's the 13th Sunday in a row that they've gathered for this.

Save the Post Office Saturday

Bethlehem, Connecticut

Nearly 700 protest rallies were planned for today, in support of the USPS. About fifteen people turned up with signs in the tiny town of Bethlehem, CT. I noticed that nearly everyone in passing cars either honked or waved in support.

It's also "Street Photography Day," in honor of Henri Cartier-Bresson's birthday. I think this counts as Street.

Looters and Arsonists

New York, New York

Apparently there was some trouble at 29th and Park Avenue. I noticed this last Sunday taking a walk around the block before my workshop session at the Penumbra Foundation.

More damage a little farther down the block. I didn't see anything else like it in the area.

POLICE TAKE NOTICE

Naugatuck, Connecticut

The building is occupied and busy, looks like some sort of machine shop. They're just a little behind the weeds growth.

Wall, Fence, Reflection

Madison, Georgia, 2012

More rummaging around in the archive of "Off Topic" pictures made on my Giant Drive-in Theater Road Trip in 2012. Look closely enough and you can see the old style hand painted advertising from long ago on the brick wall. Window reflections always fascinate me. I couldn't figure out what the little white plastic chain fence was for.

Painted Rocks

Ansonia, Connecticut

These painted rocks are near the sidewalk on Pershing Drive, on the west bank of the Naugatuck River. It's a desolate spot—the other side of the street has empty fields surrounded by cyclone fencing. No one ever seems to walk through here. My first thought was that this might be a school project, something serving as an outdoor activity, maybe in compensation for cancelled or virtual graduation ceremonies. It's that time of year, and the rocks weren't painted the last time I walked through here, not more than a month ago. The last rock seems to have a military theme though, so my first thought might be wrong.

I searched on "Ansonia painted rocks," and got two hits for Facebook pages which returned error messages, likely indicating pages for closed or invitation-only groups. So it's still a mystery.

As always if you click on the pictures you'll get a bigger and better view.

I was heading north to home with a big hurricane forecast to arrive in a few days. Morning skies were already dark and stormy.

Signs of the Times—Four

Torrington, Connecticut

The little Main Street storefront of Cafe 38 has an idea along with lots of hearts. Order one of their dessert or fruit platters to be delivered to essential workers. A more concrete expression of appreciation than paper hearts, and it could help keep a little downtown business going, all with social distancing.

Bank Street businesses weren't doing all that well before the economic effects of the pandemic.
