    Cookala's In Just Under the Wire

    and against her better judgment. Not feeling it this year. *sigh* but here I am.

    April 1

    Fire Dance

    Come February the waterfall flames;
    her orange horsetail cascades
    and drops to the basin below
    all a glow in the setting sun,
    leaving one drunk with quiet awe.

    El Capitan sparkles as he cradles her
    close against his shoulder, their afterglow
    reflects hot hues of color that dance
    upon a blanket of fresh fallen snow,
    as they gently fade to black
    beneath a speckled sky.

    Great to see you back!

    Lovely beginning. I went there once and I'd love to go again, and during a different season like the winter you describe. It sounds pretty magical.

    Oh so glad I went at you...how gorgeous, the picture, and the one the poem paints, dances, the rhymes subtle. Yay!

    don't expect a lot from me this year - just sayin'

    April 2

    Crocus

    They look forlorn after a late winter’s snow;
    droopy, faded, choked
    by bleached weeds beneath a post-storm sky.
    They wait, cups closed, until the slant of sun
    beams through the breaks and coaxes them
    to open to the warmth of rays.
    Soon they’ll dissolve, but their spears
    will hide in the greening lawn, gathering
    enough strength for a year-long sleep.
    So simple is their mindless life:
    wake, bloom, die
    with little else in between;
    how I envy their ease.

    Hey Cookie, great that you're in! And what a start! (Fab picture too.)

    Edit: hit "post" and then saw your second. I'm a sucker for slanting sunlight, nice work!

    personal crocus yarn: My dad is very protective of our crocuses. He worries that the postman will cut through the yard and trample them. So he puts garden gates jaggedly all over the front yard to protect them for their short season. "wake,bloom, die" - lovely. -d
