    15) Time

    15) Time

    Time is a metaphor
    for an effect, a phenomenon,
    for events that occur.
    Finite amounts of energy,
    (not quanta, but those too,)
    migrate, radiate, convect, and conduct
from one body to another, and, therefore,
    from one location to another.

If a body occupies the same space as another body
they must be the same body.

It is the displacement in space that we identify
as a characteristic of the event,
and we call that displacement, time,
but that too is just a metaphor.

Time This is lucid. And of the world of physics, delivered through metaphor. I like it very much.

Thank you Louise, for reading and commenting.
    Glad you liked it.
I too enjoy the marriage of science and art.
If only Neil de Grasse Tyson wrote poetry,
now that would be a revelation!

    16) After-five Mêlée

    16) After-five Mêlée

The hubbub of voices masks the cymbal crash
    of cultural-faux pas colliding;
sharkskin suits and expensive footwear mash,
    the regional manager presiding.

Not a milieu for the faint of heart
who faint at the merest slight,
Tis an ever-fixed snark whose worth's unknown,
though its snipe ne'er misses its mark.

Gossip full of rumor and innuendo
    are the weapons employed here,
heaped on absent clients and colleagues
who, bare of hope, dare not enter here.

    Business roadkill,
    vulnerable to sundry intrigues,
litter the floor of the arena.
"They say that Doris used to come,
    although I've never seen her."

    Gone now are the combatants,
    who've answered the dinner bell,
they've left a wasteland of empties,
    and reputations sent to Hell.

Lark Song ─ From my childhood I recall a Dear Old Lady telling my parents about the intended marriage of some gent they all knew, to which datum she addly darkly, "There's a lot of sex in it." You can see why your sparrow reminds me, and I can see where the Lark part of his name comes from.

Rear Window ─ First up, 10 out of 10 for "muntin" ─ haven't heard it in decades. Second, thanks for conjuring Jimmy Stooet and Mz Kelly, and indeed the great Alfie H. ─ fine material for your punchline!

The Forsyte Saga, an elegy ─ So not a novel after all? Silly me! However, ".... endless, numbing, narrative" has an admirable precision, a perfection of reference, that squares exactly with my memory.

Spectre ─ Not Phil, though. But I love a good ghost story, and I can recall getting the creeps on one particular past occasion, it's just that ...

Time ─ Hmmmmmm. Are quanta able to move because time exists? Or does time exist because quanta move? (I mentioned in a poem in an earlier NaPo that Now appears to be one ten billionth of a second thick, but that doesn't address my question.)

If a body occupies the same space as another body / they must be the same body. ─ I assure you that's not how I remember it.

After-five Mêlée ─ I don't own a sharkskin suit, it's true, but I'd say gossip full of rumour and innuendo was the only kind of gossip you'd bother about.

    Onwards!

    Regards / Dunc

Storm Mass - strong images and I bet they're praying for some of that wine, too.....heh S2L3 - for the end rhyme consider replacing arrayed with hailed maybe?
All Hail Breaks Loose - a fun take on Cinderella
Lark Song - is a sweet image and a lovely metaphor wrapped up in one
Rear Window - nice nod to that Hitchcock oldie but goodie, and I bet she' pissed, too. all that gore to clean up, and s;limy blood is the worst, and "muntin" (had to google that, now I know)
The Forsyte Saga, an elegy. - nice sonics. I've never read it, and now I probably won't ever.
Spectre - oof, this is a grisly ponderance upon a dark, mutilated unpleasantness
Time - nice use of metaphor in this
After-five Mêlée - curse that awful gossip, it can really ruin a day or a life, and usually once let out of its pen its ultra-destructive and unstoppable. it gets the center of attention I think because the people who do it as a means to harm are really sociopaths intent on gaining a rung on the ladder. their reasoning -any means to an end, right?

So I'm glad I waited a bit to return to Spectre, today it seems to me as if the message is that life is quite dark and dismal, no matter, perhaps because of this specte/Satin? I think what kept me digging was the ending, which always held on since first reading. Maybe I'm wrong about what you intend.

Time ---I liked the two line centerpiece--end to deducing--we are all part of each other, scientifically speaking. I could probably read 20 or more poems about this idea, and it would keep sinking in, little by little.

In your last poem I liked : Business roadkill. You definitely get the point across that these gatherings are nasty. Yes, we humans being ourselves and all.

SP - thank you so much for your attention and your reading. I enjoyed your insights.
There are several metaphors in Spectre, thank you for noticing. S3 and S4 are wrestling with an existential conflict I perceive (imagine) between life's demand for meticulousness and the existential strain this places on our peace of mind. Yeats's poem The Second Coming influences me here:

    "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;"

I am glad you found it interesting and took the ime to comment.

    cheers

    Dunc, thanks so much!
Your time in reading, and your energy in commenting is much appreciated.
I'm glad you raised the point regarding Time.
If, say, the object is the photon, it's properties which differentiate it from another photon include its spatio-temporal location. It is this quality I am exploring. In the case of occupying the same space (spatio-temporal aspect) it is not mere proximity, nor a partial overlap I am proposing, it is a complete mapping onto another photon in every dimension, including time, which is my thesis here.
Also, are you familiar with Leibniz' indiscernibility thesis? https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/i...indiscernible/
if, for every property F, object x has F if and only if object y has F, then x is identical to y.
So, if two particles have the identical characteristics including spatio-temporal descriptions, they are reducibly the same object. I query if this is consistent with quantum entanglement?

But, maybe you were thinking of two human bodies? heh.

I enjoyed all your comments, including those of the Lark, and rear Window, etc. Thank you!

    cheers
    Geoff

    17) A Tale of Two Kitties

    17) A Tale of Two Kitties

It was the best of crimes
It was the worst of crimes
    Samantha was feeling kinda antsy
when Leo wanted to raid the pantry.

They waited 'til the midnight hour
when all the family was asleep.
Treats lay between the sugar and the flour
Where Leo aimed, athletically, to leap.

    He didn't know that Mom had been cooking;
she'd laid the cookies out on a towel
which hung o'er the edge where Leo was looking.
He eyed the distance, as Sam began to howl.

Her warning came too late, as he had sprung.
So chilling was her yowl, he froze mid-leap,
    fell short, and by his claws he hung;
    inch-by-inch dishes began to creep.

Samantha hid her eyes; she feared the worst
Leo scrambled vainly; plates smashed on the floor
all around, bang, crash, and Leo's fate was cursed.
Then, a startled Papa thrust open the door.

Leo fell tangled in the towel. Splat!
Samantha cowered, her paws atop her head,
Papa laughed as he scooped up the cats,
he hugged them close, and soon they all were fed.

    Hi Geoff,

You seem to have acquired wisdom somewhere along the way, and you often take the long view of human folly recalling the way it winds up. I can find no flaw with your philosophy of having fun as long as it lasts.

I tried to improve myself by reading and rereading your explanation of time, but I still have a way to go with that...

In any case, your curiosity and breadth of experience are a fine recipe for your keen observations of futility with a smile.

After- Five Melee. Definitely not for the faint hearted... . "Mash" feels like the perfect verb for this vicious little get together. Incisive observation. Spot on characterisation .

A Tale of Two Kitties. Ooh this is pure delight. As a fan of " that" novel I was nervous after the opening couplet, as to where you were taking me. Glad they received hugs at the end, rather than the guillotine! Well observed naughty cat behaviour.

    Larry -
thank you muchly for taking the time.
Time. yes, that deserves a great deal of close inspection.
I'm getting there I think, but haven't yet nailed it.

    I enjoyed reading your insights.
Most complimentary, I am appreciative, touched even.
    "futility, with a smile"
I may use that as a motto.

    all the best,
    Geoff

    Hi Lou,
thanks for stopping by and commenting. Most kind.
I dunno what it is about cat poems that I like so much.
I was captivated long ago, when I was at Southern Grammar school
in Portsmouth, Hampshire, by TS Eliot's book
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.
that and the work of W.B. Yeats
made me want to write poetry.
    I'm still trying.

    all the best,
    Goffe
