Successfully manages to climb a precarious slope when its modern equivalents fail to do so. |

The 'modern equivalents' he uses are a Series 3 Range Rover and a Hummer H2. Ignoring the Hummer (the perfect example of how to exploit the reputation of a very capable vehicle by building a really rubbish version and selling it at an inflated price and in the process ruining the reputation of the original) which has the off road capability of a paper hat, the Range Rover should have been able to climb that very easy little mound. The question is, did the Range Rover fail because it couldn't get over the crest due to its length (which it should have been able to given its trick air suspension) or did it fail because Mr Clarkson didn't know how to drive it off road? |

Yes, that Landie was indeed SER454, which was my own Land Rover Series One for a few years. It was a great car, and was highly original, being one of the very last Series One 88" petrol models having the two-litre IOE engine. I was part of the support crew for the part of the DVD filmed at Enstone Airfield, where my Landie was filmed trouncing the modern 4x4's. It wasn't originally supposed to be part of the show, as it was a support vehicle, but at the last minute (over a lunch break) Clarkson decided to change the script, much to the annoyance of the producer, Brian Klein. Jeremy wanted to add something special to the off-road part of the show, and when he saw my immaculate Series One, he asked if he could include it. There was a bicycle and an acoustic guitar in the back of the car at all times during filming, as we didn't have time to remove them. The car was driven by I. Hiatt. I later fitted an overdrive and parabolic springs to the vehicle, so it was more usable on today's roads, before sadly having to part with it during a time of hardship. Incidentally, SER454 was also used as a support vehicle for the filming at Enstone Airfield of Clarkson's "Heaven and Hell" DVD, as it was my runabout while acting as support crew during filming again. |
