Sure it can happen!

I used to work in radiology, and one day we had a 50+-year-old woman come in for a prenatal sonogram.

She was very surprised to learn that day, she was pregnant with twins...

Two babies, and she said her pregnancy was a surprise.

She said they were not only NOT trying, but thought she was too old to get pregnant.

And the babies were due in just six more weeks!

My 45-year-old friend is happily expecting her first baby, after giving up on fertility treatments.

My husband's first cousin had a baby at 44 years old, and another baby at 45 years old - which was a surprise.

They thought she was too old to get pregnant, so they didn't use birth control - and voila!

My father told me about his own aunt who had a baby at 51 years old in Italy.

This was a long time ago as my father is 80 years old.

So there was no chance in h*ll that it was donor egg.

The fact is, before birth control and things like tubal ligation, women routinely gave birth into their 40s and no one batted an eye.

The birth rate for women in their 40s went down as soon as birth control became available.
There is a direct correlation.

What is different now is women are having their first child in their 40s, whereas long ago they would be having their 10th.

That is the only difference.

But from what I've read there is no difference in the fertility among women who have versus women who have not had children before.

I think the reason people make such a big deal about age now is that there was such a long period of time when the birth rate for women in their 40s was low - because that was their choice.

So people were no longer used to the idea anymore.

Then you have the RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] beating us down with their statistics too.

A long time ago women didn't worry or think about statistics - they were too busy having babies!

Just to let all you hopefuls out there that this does happen!

Women can frequently become pregnant after their 40s and 50s but can struggle to sustain their pregnancy due to lack of hormones and health-related complications, such as blood pressure problems, etc.

When there is a problem with menses, often their OB/GYN gives progesterone to promote sloughing of the lining of the uterus; this may also slough off an early embryo.

Being a nurse, I never assume anymore a woman over 50 years old isn't pregnant, as the last call I received was from a 56-year-old woman who sustained a pregnancy unassisted in any way.

She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, with no complications at all.

She even had a natural birth, with no medical assistance!

I can't relate to being an over 50 years old mom, but I'm the daughter of an over 50 mom.

I'm child number seven, arriving when my mom was 55 years old, and her second menopause baby!

Most of our nieces and nephews were older than us, except two were born within eight months of me!

My sisters said what was weird was being pregnant when Mom was, and she didn't go crazy over the grand-kids as much as their in-laws did.

I was so lucky to have my mom for 40 years after my birth.

My older kids loved her sooo much.

Yes, I am 51 years old... and pregnant!

To say it's a shock, is really a minor name for the way I'm feeling.

This is very much an unplanned pregnancy, we were not trying to get pregnant.

Not at all!

To be honest, I really thought my baby making days were behind me.

I did not think it was even possible to get pregnant at my age.

Neither did my doctor!

But then the ultrasound tech found a beautiful baby boy inside me!

I am 50 years old, and 13 weeks pregnant with my fifth child.

I conceived naturally and will be 51 years old when my son is born.

I am using a midwife, and have no health issues whatsoever, even given my advanced maternal age!!

That phrase cracks me up!

I don't even have elevated blood pressure.

I am athletic, still ride my bike, although have recently switched to a ladies' version for ease of dismount because I got hit big time with relaxin, and for safety.

It's been 18 years since I last gave birth, so this is still pretty mind-boggling to me, but this child is very much wanted!

I'm not at all intimidated by the idea of giving birth at my age and after an 18-year gap between this one and my last child.

I'm not a high-risk pregnancy, and a lifetime of living healthy I'm sure has contributed to how great I feel.

But even if a woman finds herself pregnant or trying to get pregnant after 40, it's never too late to start eating right and exercising.

Baby dust to all those trying, and sticky dust to all of us having already conceived!!

Thanks!! Laura

MOST women from about age 13 to age 52 can get pregnant after sexual intercourse.

If you're sexually active, and you don't want to get pregnant, you DO have to use a reliable form of birth control.

Otherwise, you DO risk getting pregnant.

by Whitney Cornelison
-- The road of infertility is one of pain, struggle, and loneliness. It's not a topic that couples bring up in conversation.

It's a journey that will either bring couples together and closer to God, or one that will slowly divide couples as they distance themselves from each other, their friends, and God.

It is time to break the silence. I want you to know that you are not alone. This may not be the path that you would have chosen for your own life. I know I would not have written infertility into my story. But we don't write our stories, God does.

He writes the story of our lives in a way that is beautiful and brings Him the most glory. It's not always perfect, but it's good. It's never easy, but the reward is greater than we could ever imagine.

Whether you are struggling with infertility, or you know someone who is, this book was written for you. Never in a million years would I have thought I would write an eBook telling you our story, but I did.

I pray that this eBook will encourage your heart, give you insight into the reality of infertility, and above all, glorify God.

In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 years old and older.

The birth rate for women in the 40-44 age group has risen steadily since 2000, by 2% annually! It rose 4% from 2015 to 2016.

The birth rate for women 45-49 years old remained unchanged from 2008 till 2012. It rose 0.8% from 2015 to 2016.

The birth rate for women aged 50 and over has remained unchanged since 2006.

Let's check the latest birth stats over 40!

Image: Births and Natality, Births: Final Data for 2016, by CDC

Women in their 40s
—The birth rate for women aged 40–44 was 11.4 births per 1,000 women in 2016, up 4% from 2015 (11.0) (Table 2) to the highest rate for this group since 1966 (11). The number of births to women in their early 40s increased by 1% from 2015 to 2016.

The birth rate for women aged 45–49 (which includes births to women aged 50 and over) was 0.9 births per 1,000 women in 2016, up from 0.8 in 2015. The number of births to women aged 45 and over was essentially unchanged from 2015 to 2016.

Women aged 50 and over
— A total of 786 births in 2016 were to women aged 50 and over, essentially unchanged from 2015 (754) (Table 3) (10). The number of births to women in this age group has generally increased since 1997 (144) when data for women aged 50 and over became available again. The birth rate for women aged 50–54 was 0.7 births per 10,000 women in 2016, unchanged from 2015. Because of the small number of births to women in this age group, the birth rate for women aged 50–54 is expressed per 10,000 women. For rates shown elsewhere in this report, births to women aged 50 and over are included with births to women aged 45–49 when computing birth rates by age of mother (the denominator for the rate is women aged 45–49).

A woman's fertility falls after the age of 35, but many an older woman has been surprised when she has fallen pregnant with an unplanned baby in her late 40s or even early 50s.

Cherie Blair, the Prime Minister's wife, was certainly not alone in assuming her fertility was negligible only to be surprised and delighted to be proved wrong.

The Prime Minister's wife gave birth to her fourth child two years ago, at the age of 45. Their first child, Euan, was born in 1984.

Sadly, Cherie suffered a miscarriage following another unplanned pregnancy at the age of 47.

Late pregnancy can and does happen, and for this reason, it is important to get correct advice about contraception even beyond the menopause.

Gail asks: "Is pregnancy possible during perimenopause?"

In response to your question, you have no doubt heard of change of life babies?

Where unplanned pregnancies occurred when women thought their childbearing years were over.

While statistically there is less likelihood of becoming pregnant at this time, there are many exceptions. Women at midlife are still able to conceive — whether they want to or not.

In fact, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, there were 743 births to women 50 years and over in 2014. In addition, the birth rate for women aged 45 to 49 was 0.8 births per 1,000 women. While these are small numbers, it indicates that pregnancy can happen in midlife (when many erroneously assume naturally conceived pregnancy is no longer possible.)

If you are certain you do not want to become pregnant,
you will need to continue to use birth control.

My father told me when he was younger, he worked at a job where one of his co-workers told him something surprising.

His co-worker said his wife was pregnant by accident when she was 51 years old.

They had a lovely baby boy!

The pregnancy was obviously was NOT from donor egg, because donor egg and IVF [in vitro fertilization] did not exist yet back then!

Image: Before Your Pregnancy: A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception, by Amy Ogle (Author), Lisa Mazzullo (Author), Mary D'Alton (Foreword). Publisher: Ballantine Books; Rev Upd edition (May 24, 2011)Before Your Pregnancy:
A 90-Day Guide for Couples on How to Prepare for a Healthy Conception
by Amy Ogle, Lisa Mazzullo, Mary D'Alton

-- Covering preconception and inter-conception (between-pregnancy) well-being for women and men, Amy Ogle and Lisa Mazzullo draw on new research from their complementary fields of expertise and reveal how good preconception health can lower the risk of pregnancy complications and improve lifelong health.

Why a ninety-day guide? It takes that long for sperm to mature, and at least that much time for the prospective mother to ensure that her body becomes pregnancy-ready.

In a warm, intelligent style, the authors address up-to-date topics such as age, heredity, vaccinations, supplements, and weight.

My doctor also said as we get closer to menopause, our ovaries can shoot eggs out at random with no warning, as last-ditch efforts.

She has worked with women who thought they didn't ovulate, but out of the blue, got pregnant.

Their charts showed no ovulation. I didn't know this was possible.

She is about 50+ years old, by her looks, and has a set of six-year-old twins.

She said when she conceived, she ovulated the day before her period.

She had her period and found out she was pregnant shortly after that.

I don't know how she knew she ovulated that day, but I believe her.

She also said a really hot night of sex is all it takes for some women to pop that egg out.

Maybe that's why some women get pregnant after giving up the job of TTC [trying to conceive].

They go back to BD'ing [baby-dancing] for the enjoyment, which I haven't done in so long.
