  • Leonardo da Vinci
    Dec. at 67 (1452-1519)
Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. His genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination". According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote". Marco Rosci states that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unusual for his time. Born out of wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci, and a peasant woman, Caterina, in Vinci in the region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter Verrocchio.

  • Danica Sue Patrick (; born March 25, 1982) is a retired American professional racing driver. She is the most successful woman in the history of American open-wheel racing—her victory in the 2008 Indy Japan 300 is the only win by a woman in an IndyCar Series race. Born to a working-class family in Beloit, Wisconsin, Patrick began karting at the age of ten and achieved early success by winning her class in the World Karting Association Grand National Championship three times in the mid-1990s. She dropped out of high school with her parents' permission in 1998, and moved to the United Kingdom to further her career. Patrick competed in Formula Vauxhall and Formula Ford before returning to the United States in 2001 due to a lack of funding. In 2002, she competed in five Barber Dodge Pro Series races for Rahal Letterman Racing. Patrick later raced in the Toyota Atlantic Series for the next two years. Her best effort was third in the championship standings for the 2004 season where she became the first woman to win a pole position in the series. She first drove in the IndyCar Series with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2005 and took three pole positions, equaling Tomas Scheckter's record of poles in a rookie season. She was named the Rookie of the Year for both the 2005 Indianapolis 500 and the 2005 IndyCar Series. She improved over the next two years with Rahal Letterman Racing in 2006 and later Andretti Green Racing in 2007. In 2008, Patrick followed up this victory to place sixth overall in the drivers' standings. She improved on this to secure fifth the following season, which saw her finish a career-high third at the Indianapolis 500, the best performance by any woman at the race. Patrick's overall form declined during 2010, but she still managed two second-places at oval tracks before leaving IndyCar after the 2011 season to focus on stock car racing full-time. Patrick began racing stock cars in 2010 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (now Xfinity Series) with her best result coming in the form of a fourth-place finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2011. She placed a career-high tenth in the 2012 season standings and was the second woman to clinch a pole position in the Nationwide Series after Shawna Robinson in 1994. Patrick started in the Sprint Cup Series (now Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series) in 2012. She became the first woman to win a Cup Series pole position by setting the fastest qualifying lap for the 2013 Daytona 500, finishing eighth. Patrick bested Janet Guthrie's record for the most top-ten finishes by a woman in the Sprint Cup Series in 2015. She stopped racing full-time after the 2017 season, but competed at the 2018 Daytona 500 and the 2018 Indianapolis 500 before officially retiring.

  • Vincent van Gogh
    Dec. at 37 (1853-1890)
Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch: [ˈvɪnsɛnt ˈʋɪləm vɑŋ ˈɣɔx] (listen); 30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness and poverty. Born into an upper-middle-class family, Van Gogh drew as a child and was serious, quiet and thoughtful. As a young man he worked as an art dealer, often travelling, but became depressed after he was transferred to London. He turned to religion and spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium. He drifted in ill health and solitude before taking up painting in 1881, having moved back home with his parents. His younger brother Theo supported him financially, and the two kept up a long correspondence by letter. His early works, mostly still lifes and depictions of peasant labourers, contain few signs of the vivid colour that distinguished his later work. In 1886, he moved to Paris, where he met members of the avant-garde, including Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, who were reacting against the Impressionist sensibility. As his work developed he created a new approach to still lifes and local landscapes. His paintings grew brighter in colour as he developed a style that became fully realised during his stay in Arles in the south of France in 1888. During this period he broadened his subject matter to include series of olive trees, wheat fields and sunflowers. Van Gogh suffered from psychotic episodes and delusions and though he worried about his mental stability, he often neglected his physical health, did not eat properly and drank heavily. His friendship with Gauguin ended after a confrontation with a razor when, in a rage, he severed part of his own left ear. He spent time in psychiatric hospitals, including a period at Saint-Rémy. After he discharged himself and moved to the Auberge Ravoux in Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, he came under the care of the homeopathic doctor Paul Gachet. His depression continued and on 27 July 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest with a Lefaucheux revolver. He died from his injuries two days later. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime, and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood genius, the artist "where discourses on madness and creativity converge". His reputation began to grow in the early 20th century as elements of his painting style came to be incorporated by the Fauves and German Expressionists. He attained widespread critical, commercial and popular success over the ensuing decades, and is remembered as an important but tragic painter, whose troubled personality typifies the romantic ideal of the tortured artist. Today, Van Gogh's works are among the world's most expensive paintings to have ever sold at auction, and his legacy is honoured by a museum in his name, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which holds the world's largest collection of his paintings and drawings.

  • Logan Paul
    Age: 29
Logan Paul parlayed his talent for brief bursts of physical comedy into an enormously popular and financially profitable career as a YouTube personality and occasional film and television actor, until an unexpected scandal cut his burgeoning career short. Born Logan Alexander Paul on April 1, 1995 in Westlake, Ohio, he reportedly began making internet videos for a YouTube channel at the age of 10, but focused most of his teenaged energy on scholastic sports, with a particular focus on football and wrestling. Paul put aside these interests after enrolling at Ohio University, where he studied industrial engineering and maintaining a modest presence on YouTube. His standing on the social media site changed dramatically when he entered a short, six-second video created on the internet video sharing service Vine into a contest sponsored by Virgin Mobile. His entry proved to be one of the most shared videos in the contest, and by the end of 2013, his Vine account had over one million followers viewing and sharing his comic efforts, which largely hinged on broad slapstick comedy or Paul placing himself in harm's way, with decidedly nerve-rattling results. By 2014, he had over 3.1 million followers on social media platforms, with 150,000 alone on YouTube, where his first Vine compilation was viewed four million times in a single week. Such a sizable audience made Paul an extremely attractive showcase for companies, and he soon began earning thousands of dollars from advertising revenue. In 2015, he was named the tenth most influential figure on Vine, while his YouTube channels - which split into two outlets, one devoted to his comedy sketches and the other a daily video blog, or "vlog" - were followed by 4.36 million and 15.7 million viewers, respectively, by 2018. Interest from film and television studios was a natural next step for Paul, though his acting roles outside of YouTube Red productions like the science fiction thriller "The Thinning" (2016) were limited to guest appearances on series like "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" (NBC, 1999- ). Social media remained his most popular showcase, and in this capacity, he enjoyed a successful partnership with Dwayne Johnson on a series of 2017 shorts that detailed, in comic broad strokes, why his guest appearances in all of Johnson's films had been removed from the final release. But a pair of controversial videos posted that same year did much to undermine his shot at mainstream acceptance: a November 23 video titled "No Handlebars," which borrowed a sample of the Flobots single "Handlebars" and featured Paul appearing to ride women like bicycles, was lambasted by the media. A month later, Paul uploaded a video that depicted the corpse of a man who had committed suicide by hanging in Aokigahara, a forest in northwestern Japan where numerous similar deaths had occurred over many years. Seen by over 6 million people within 24 hours, both Paul and the video were widely criticized, and YouTube was petitioned to remove his channel. His channels were eventually removed from Google Preferred and production was halted on his Comcast video series, "Logan Paul vs." More significantly, the video and its ensuing uproar prompted YouTube to review its posting policies. He offered a number of video apologies in the wake of the incident, and posted a lengthy look at suicide prevention to his vlog channel in late January 2018.

  • Charlie Chaplin
    Dec. at 88 (1889-1977)
Charlie Chaplin, born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London, England on April 16, 1889, emerged from a challenging upbringing to become an icon of the film industry. Both his parents were entertainers in the music hall tradition, but his father was absent for most of his life, and his mother battled mental health issues, leading to a childhood marked by poverty and hardship. Despite these circumstances, Chaplin's talent for performance revealed itself at an early age. He began performing professionally as a member of a juvenile group called The Eight Lancashire Lads and his career took off from there, ultimately leading him to the United States. In America, Chaplin found success in the burgeoning film industry. He signed a contract with Keystone Studios in 1913 and created his iconic character, "The Tramp," a year later. This character‚ a man of humble means and scruffy appearance with a heart of gold‚ resonated deeply with audiences around the world. During his time at Keystone, and later at Essanay, Mutual, and First National studios, he wrote, directed, and starred in dozens of films that showcased his gift for physical comedy and social satire. Chaplin's influence extended beyond his on-screen performances. In 1919, he co-founded United Artists studio with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.W. Griffith, allowing him greater control over his films. He remained politically and socially active throughout his life, using his platform to comment on the issues of the day. • It can certainly be said that Patricia Arquette hails from a show business family. Of the actor's four siblings, three of them-David, Rosanna, and Alexis Arquette-were actors as well. Arquette was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1968 to Brenda and Lewis Arquette, the latter of whom was also an actor. The family moved from Chicago to a commune in Virginia for a period of time before returning to Chicago and then eventually, settling in Los Angeles. Arquette took an interest in acting at a young age, though she entertained interests in becoming a midwife or even a nun. Her home life could be extremely unstable and often violent, and so at age 14, Arquette ran away and began living with her older sister Rosanna, who was already a working actor. Arquette made her screen debut in "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" (1987). Parts followed in projects like the Sam Shepard ensemble film "Far North" (1988) and the gritty drama "The Indian Runner" (1991) before she landed the role of Alabama in "True Romance" (1993), a quirky crime drama written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Tony Scott. The movie became a sleeper sensation and Arquette became an in-demand actor, quickly moving on to star in the adventure drama "Beyond Rangoon" (1995) in 1995, the same year she married fellow actor Nicolas Cage-though it was revealed later that the couple separated after less than a year before eventually divorcing in 2000. Arquette continued to appear in prestige projects such as David Lynch's "Lost Highway" (1997) and Martin Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead" (1999). Then in 2005, Arquette began starring on the hit TV series "Medium" (NBC, 2005-2011) beginning a new phase in her fame. She married actor Thomas Jane the following year, and though their marriage ended the same year that "Medium" wrapped in 2011, Arquette was soon impressing audiences once again as she joined the cast of the acclaimed period crime series "Boardwalk Empire" (HBO, 2010-2014) in 2013. The next year saw the release of a project Arquette had been working on for several years, the real-time coming-of-age film "Boyhood" (2014), which earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She moved on to star on "CSI: Cyber" (CBS, 2015-2016) before earning tremendous acclaim portraying disturbed mother Dee Dee Blanchard in the limited series "The Act" (Hulu, 2019-2019), based on the true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard.

  • Though many comedy fans were first introduced to Keegan-Michael Key as a cast member on "MADtv" (Fox, 1995-2016), he truly became a household name thanks to his sketch comedy series "Key and Peele" (Comedy Central, 2012-15). Born in Southfield, Michigan in 1971 to an African American father and white mother, Key was adopted by parents who, by chance, reflected the same racial makeup. Key would later cite the regular "code switching" he engaged in between the two cultures within his family as contributing to his interest in playing different characters. Key eventually earned a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Detroit Mercy as well as a master's from Pennsylvania State University. He was a mainstage cast member at Detroit's Second City improv theater before relocating to Chicago to join that city's even more prestigious Second City location. After a few years, he made the move to Los Angeles to pursue a career on screen, where he slowly began to accrue credits with appearances on "ER" (NBC, 1994-2009) and in the film "Uncle Nino" (2002). In 2004, Key was cast on the sketch comedy series "MADtv" along with another up-and-coming comedy performer named Jordan Peele. Key played a number of beloved recurring characters on the show such as Eugene Struthers and Coach Hines, and when he left the show in 2009, he and castmate Peele opted to pitch their own series to Comedy Central. "Key and Peele" proved both a critical and commercial hit, with Key's regular characters like Luther the Anger Translator becoming pop culture sensations. Key also appeared in recurring roles on "Fargo" (FX, 2014-) and "Parks and Recreation" (NBC, 2009-2015) at this time, in addition to co-starring with Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair on the largely improvised series "Playing House" (USA, 2014-17) and making a small but hilariously memorable appearance in the comedy "Let's Be Cops" (2014). When "Key and Peele" wrapped in 2015, he appeared in the feature film "Tomorrowland" (2015) and began providing the voice of American Ranger on the animated series "SuperMansion" (Crackle, 2015- ). The next year, Key re-teamed with Peele for the absurdist comedy film "Keanu" (2016) and honored his roots as an improvisor with the sleeper hit "Don't Think Twice" (2016). Then in 2017, Key began starring on the comedy-drama series "Friends from College" (Netflix, 2017-19). Though the show lasted only two seasons, it was a major critical hit, increasing Key's reputation as not just a gifted comedian but a talented actor. He quickly moved forward, co-starring with Eddie Murphy in "Dolemite is My Name" (2019) as well as with John Cena in the family comedy "Playing with Fire" (2019), as well as reteaming with Peele as a double act in "Toy Story 4."

    Dec. at 64 (1847-1911)
Joseph John Pulitzer ( PUUL-it-sər; Hungarian: [ˈpulit͡sɛr]; born József Pulitzer; April 10, 1847 – October 29, 1911) was a newspaper publisher of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the New York World. He became a leading national figure in the Democratic Party and was elected congressman from New York. He crusaded against big business and corruption, and helped keep the Statue of Liberty in New York. In the 1890s the fierce competition between his World and William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal caused both to develop the techniques of yellow journalism, which won over readers with sensationalism, sex, crime and graphic horrors. The wide appeal reached a million copies a day and opened the way to mass-circulation newspapers that depended on advertising revenue (rather than cover price or political party subsidies) and appealed to readers with multiple forms of news, gossip, entertainment and advertising. Today, his name is best known for the Pulitzer Prizes, which were established in 1917 as a result of his endowment to Columbia University. The prizes are given annually to recognize and reward excellence in American journalism, photography, literature, history, poetry, music and drama. Pulitzer founded the Columbia School of Journalism by his philanthropic bequest; it opened in 1912.

Like postwar Japan itself, he combines the ancient traditions with a distinctly modern, Western twist.

  • Maisie Williams stole hearts with her 2011 screen debut as the imperiled but indefatigable would-be warrior princess on HBO's phenomenal fantasy series "Game of Thrones" (2011- ). The U.K. native trained from a young age as a dancer, which proved handy as she auditioned for Arya Stark, the irrepressible "Game of Thrones" tomboy who was more interested in making herself a great swordswoman than becoming a demure object of courtly love. With the advent of "GoT" in spring 2011, Williams' portrayal of Arya drew adoration from both critics and the most diehard fans of author George R.R. Martin's source novels. In 2012, she took a starring role in the BBC horror miniseries "The Secret of Crickley Hall." Standing out among a vanguard of exemplary new talent on "Game of Thrones" and holding her own opposite some of the U.K.'s most venerable actors, Williams quickly established herself as one of Britain's most charismatic and naturalistic young thespians. Born April 15, 1997, Williams grew up in Bath, Somerset, U.K. She developed an early love of dance and supplemented her education at the Norton Hill School in nearby Midsomer Norton with study at Bath's Susan Hill School of Dance. Hill recommended Williams for a talent showcase of fellow youthful performers in France, where she was spotted and signed by a talent agent. In 2010, Williams joined a veritable army of Irish and British thespians recruited for HBO's ambitious project "Game of Thrones." The epic fantasy adventure, based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling series of novels, A Song of Ice and Fire, chronicled the power struggle for the eponymous Iron Throne, the seat of power on the mythical continent of Westeros. Comprised of various fiefdoms and family dynasties, the players in the multi-sided gambit of violence and political intrigue were the usurping Baratheons, the wealthy Lannisters, the island-dwelling Greyjoys, and the noble Starks, a clan from the rugged northern region of Westeros. With the series' premiere in spring 2011, Williams' feisty unconventional princess carried key plot threads as Arya followed her father Ned Stark (Sean Bean) to court to serve King Robert Baratheon and, unlike her girly-girl sister Sansa (Sophie Turner), eschewed more distaff courtly pursuits for exploration and combat training. After the treacherous Lannisters staged a coup and murdered Ned, Arya's thread made her a major character in Season two as she fled to the war-torn countryside and, disguised as a boy, wound up a servant to the Machiavellian patriarch Tywin Lannister (Charles Dance). Though acting amongst such stage luminaries as Michelle Fairley, Aidan Gillen and Conleth Hill, Williams drew critical raves as Arya's intrepid pluck and savvy made her a fan favorite. Off-season, Williams resumed her dance training at Bath Dance College. In 2012, she garnered her second major credit playing the teen daughter of a troubled family who moves into a haunted house in the BBC miniseries "The Secret of Crickley Hall." She supported another British stage legend, Patrick Stewart, as the two played a pair of grifters in the 2012 London Olympics-themed short film "The Olympic Ticket Scalper" for Funnyordie.com. After appearing in the indie films "Heatstroke" (2013) and "Gold" (2014), Williams earned acclaim for her starring role in "The Falling" (2014), a British drama by writer/director Carol Morley about an episode of mass hysteria at a 1960s boarding school. She next appeared in a story arc on the canonical British science fiction series "Doctor Who" (BBC 1963- ).

  • Lena Olin
    Age: 69
A powerful and beautiful Swedish actress in the tradition of Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann, Lena Olin first came to prominence in Sweden as a "Bergman actress," working in plays and films directed by the great Ingmar Bergman. The child of actors-her father, Stig Olin, appeared in Bergman films during the 1940s and 50s-she gravitated to the profession in an attempt to overcome her crippling shyness, and though she failed her first audition for the Royal Dramatic Theater school, Bergman saw enough to cast her in a small role in his "Face to Face" (1976). She went on to appear in "The Adventures of Picasso" (1978) and acted for Bergman in "Fanny and Alexander" (1982). In "After the Rehearsal" (1984), she played Anna, a character written expressly for her. Her role as an actress who infuriates her director by getting pregnant while working on one of August Strindberg's plays prefigured actual events when her own pregnancy would complicate a Bergman production of Strindberg's "A Dream Play."

  • Mary Pickford
    Dec. at 87 (1892-1979)
Long before Charlie Chaplin ever met Mack Sennett, silent film actress Mary Pickford had become the first superstar of a burgeoning movie business with her collaboration with director D.W. Griffith. Having broken into movies in 1909, Pickford became such as a fast-rising star, that by 1916 she was making an unprecedented $10,000 a week and a percentage of the profits. She rode the wave to stardom as the curly blonde, elfin moppet in "Tess of the Storm Country" (1914), "Madame Butterfly" (1915), "The Poor Little Rich Girl" (1917) and "The Little American" (1917). She had big hits with "Stella Maris" (1918), "Daddy Long Legs" (1919) and "Little Lord Fauntleroy" (1921). In 1919, Pickford - along with Charlie Chapin, D.W. Griffith and future husband Douglas Fairbanks - formed their own studio, United Artists, in an effort to secure more artistic control over their films. Meanwhile, she developed a more mature persona with director Ernst Lubitsch and eventually segued into talkies, winning an Oscar for Best Actress - and kicking up a bit of controversy - for her performance in "Coquette" (1929). But she soon left acting altogether, making her last film, "Secrets" (1933), before settling into a strictly producer role. Living in Pickfair, her famous Beverly Hills estate, in near seclusion for the rest of her life, Pickford nonetheless basked in her legacy as a pioneering actress whose girl-next-door charm made her Hollywood's first true movie star.

An intelligent, appealingly offbeat American actress, Lake Bell earned her dramatic training in England before making the leap to the small screen with such projects as "War Stories" (NBC, 2003) opposite Jeff Goldblum and "Miss Match" (NBC, 2003) opposite Alicia Silverstone. She came to the attention of critics and audiences alike as Sally Heep, a lawyer who beguiles James Spader on "The Practice" (ABC, 1997-2004) and "Boston Legal" (ABC, 2004-08) and then booked the lead on her own series, the sci-fi aquatic adventure "Surface" (NBC, 2005-06). An excellent comedic second banana, Bell delighted as snarky women in "Over Her Dead Body" (2008), "What Happens in Vegas" (2008), "It's Complicated" (2009) and "No Strings Attached" (2011). As she began to branch out into writing and directing as well, Bell achieved minor stardom for her hilarious turn as Dr. Cat Black, who narrated and anchored the cult favorite "Childrens Hospital" (Adult Swim, 2008- ), which pushed bizarre black comedy to its limits and beyond. Distinguished by her smart, funny screen presence and penchant for unusual projects, Lake Bell exhibited a unique energy and likability that set her apart from her more fame-obsessed, less self-aware colleagues.

  • A beautiful, effervescent teen star, Lark Voorhies went from being one of the original stars of the minor hit "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" (The Disney Channel, 1988-89) to one of the six iconic high school leads of the international smash "Saved by the Bell" (NBC, 1989-1993). As the lovably shallow fashionista Lisa Turtle, Voorhies won two Young Artist Awards and achieved teen idol immortality as a beloved member of the Bayside High crew, a role she would repeat in all the made-for-TV movies, spin-offs and reboots. After the original "Bell" rang for the last time, she lensed long-running roles on the soaps "Days of Our Lives" (NBC, 1965- ) and "The Bold and the Beautiful" (CBS, 1987- ). Romantically linked to Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Martin Lawrence, Voorhies also notched film roles in "How to Be a Player" (1997) and "How High" (2001) but worked most steadily on TV in multiple guest roles, including appearances on "In the House" (NBC, 1995-96; UPN, 1996-99) and "The Parkers" (UPN, 1999-2004). In 2012, she inadvertently made headlines when she gave several interviews appearing physically altered and mentally distracted; her mother would tell People that Voorhies had suffered a breakdown after an unspecified trauma and had also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which the actress denied. Although her later-in-life troubles were definite cause for concern, Lark Voorhies retained enormous goodwill with fans who had grown up idolizing her and who wished her the best in health and happiness.

  • Though Taran Killam seemed like an overnight success when he joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" (NBC 1975- ) as a featured player in the fall of 2010, he already had an extensive resume at the time, including a stint on SNL's most successful competitor, "MADtv" (Fox 1995-2009). Born on April Fool's Day 1982 and raised in a small town near San Bernadino, CA, Killan made his film debut in 1994 in a small role in "The Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult." In 2001, at the age of 19, he joined the cast of Fox's "MADtv" for one season. While studying with improv troupe The Groundlings in Los Angeles, Killam made guest appearances on a handful of comedy and variety series, including "All That" (Nickelodeon 1994-2005) and its spinoff, the Amanda Bynes vehicle "The Amanda Show" (Nickelodeon 1999-2002). He also had a small part in the Ashton Kutcher romantic comedy "Just Married" (2003). In 2005, Killam had a key role in a fascinating TV misfire called "Nobody's Watching." Created by writer/producer Bill Lawrence, the show was conceived as a meta-sitcom, in which two TV-obsessed young men, Derrick (Killam) and Will (Paul Campbell) are followed by a reality-TV camera crew as they try to write and produce their own sitcom. A pilot was produced for The WB, but the network declined after focus groups reacted negatively. But when the show appeared on YouTube the following year, it found enough fans to get a series of web-only episodes bankrolled by NBC in 2006-07. As part of the ongoing conceit of the series, Killam and Campbell appeared in character as background actors on a number of NBC series during this period, including "Days of Our Lives" (NBC 1965- ) and Lawrence's own "Scrubs" (NBC 2001-08 / ABC 2009-2010). Killam returned to sketch comedy as a cast member on the improv show "Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out" (MTV 2005-07) and its more conventional sketch-based spinoff "Nick Cannon Presents: Short Circuitz" (MTV 2007). In 2006, Killam began an occasional recurring role on the sitcom "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS 2005-2014) as Blauman, an obnoxious co-worker of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). While working on that show, Killam met and began dating actress Cobie Smulders, who played the leading role of Robin Scherbatsky. The couple had a daughter, Shaelyn Cado Killam, in 2009, and got married in 2012. In 2010, Killam joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live" as a featured player alongside fellow new faces Vanessa Bayer, Paul Brittan and Jay Pharoah. Killam's boyish charisma made him an immediate standout among the new cast members. He proved adept at celebrity impersonations (including a dead-on skewering of Michael Cera's twee mannerisms in co-star Abby Elliott's recurring sketch "Gettin' Quirky With Zooey Deschanel"), and his original material had an oddball charm of its own. For example, his nearly wordless recurring sketch "Les Jeunes de Paris" consisted of cast members dancing madly to French pop songs on a set decorated like a nouvelle vague film of the early 1960s. Killam was promoted to the show's main cast at the start of the 38th season in 2012. The following year, Killam got his first major film role, as a disgruntled DEA agent in the Sandra Bullock/Melissa McCarthy buddy comedy "The Heat" (2013). Between seasons of SNL, Killam appeared in small roles in films ranging from the comedy sequel "Grown Ups 2" (2013) and "Teenage Mutant Ninaja Turtles" (2014) to Oscar-winner "12 Years a Slave" (2013). He also appeared as himself in a cameo in "Ted 2" (2015) and starred in the educational animated series "Nature Cat" (PBS Kids 2015- ) in the title role. In August 2016, it was announced that Killam would not be returning to "Saturday Night Live" for his seventh season, in part because he was busy directing and co-starring in the action comedy "Why We're Killing Gunther" (2017) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

  • Whether on Broadway, television or the silver screen, Tony Award-winning performer Jonathan Groff proved equally adept no matter the medium. Born March 26, 1985, his parents - one Methodist, the other Mennonite - instilled conservative values in the young Groff, including weekly Sunday school sessions. Despite this religious upbringing, however, it was the call of the Broadway stage that Groff eventually heeded, forgoing his initial plan to attend Carnegie Mellon University in 2005 for a chance to understudy in a production of "In My Life." Despite never seeing the stage, Groff's patience paid off just a year later, when he starred in the original production of "Spring Awakening." Based upon a controversial German play that explored themes of homosexuality, rape, abortion, child abuse and suicide, it went on to win eight Tony Awards, with the Best Leading Actor going to Groff. The acclaim led to a regular role on the long-running soap opera "One Life to Live" (ABC 1968-2013). Fate, however, cut his stint short, as the real-life Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 nixed his character's ongoing storyline about a similar school shooting. Nonetheless, it began an up-tick in Groff's career that continued in 2009, when he made his feature film debut in director Ang Lee's late-'60s period piece "Taking Woodstock" (2009). Roles in the indie family drama "Twelve Thirty" (2010) and Robert Redford's "The Conspirator" (2010) followed, in between several more off-Broadway performances. In 2010, Groff began his most-visible role, a 12-episode stint on the series "Glee" (Fox 2009-2015) as the leader of Vocal Adrenaline, the rival glee club. The following year saw Groff take on his first starring film role in the low-budget indie comedy "C.O.G." (2011). His next movie brought him to an entirely new fanbase: the animated musical "Frozen" (2013), in which he played the male lead of Kristoff, was an enormous hit that inspired a fanatically devoted young audience. Conversely, Groff's next project was the decidedly adult comedy-drama series "Looking" (HBO 2014-15), in which he starred as a gay video game developer looking for love in San Francisco. After appearing in a small role in Clint Eastwood's "American Sniper" (2014), Groff co-starred in the television adaptation of Larry Kramer's "The Normal Heart" (HBO 2014) After "Looking" ended following its second season, the story was concluded with the feature-length "Looking: The Movie" (HBO 2016).

  • A classically trained British actor who honed his craft on the stage, Michael York made a smooth transition to the screen with several noted Shakespearean performances in films made by Italian director Franco Zeffirelli. Though not a leading performer, York delivered strong turns as Lucentino in "The Taming of the Shrew" (1967) and Tybalt in "Romeo and Juliet" (1968), before he played more seductively charming men in "Something for Everyone" (1970) and "Cabaret" (1972). While starring as D'Artagnan in "The Three Musketeers" (1973) and Logan in the sci-fi cult classic "Logan's Run" (1976), he also turned to television to play Pip in "Great Expectations" (NBC, 1974) and John the Baptist in the epic miniseries "Jesus of Nazareth" (NBC, 1977). In the following decade, York joined the cast of "Knot's Landing" (CBS, 1979-1993), while stepping back into guest starring spots on shows like "Babylon 5" (TNT, 1993-98) and "Sliders" (Fox, 1995-99). Though he made fewer appearances on the big screen later in his career, York was quite memorable as the affable Basil Exposition in the "Austin Power" series, starring Mike Myers. As he continued forward, York diversified his talents to include voice work for both animated projects and a host of audiobooks, which served to underscore the wide breadth of the actor's talents.

After receiving his training at RADA, the tall actor noted for his patrician air made his stage debut in 1953 and his London stage debut in 1961. Glover, who joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s, excelled in playing character roles, often in classical plays like "Much Ado About Nothing," "Antony and Cleopatra" and "Cyrano de Bergerac." He won critical praise and an Olivier Award for his supporting performance in "Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2" in 1993 and headlined the 1997 revival of "Chips With Everything."

  • John Tyler
    Dec. at 71 (1790-1862)
John Tyler (March 29, 1790 – January 18, 1862) was the tenth president of the United States from 1841 to 1845 after briefly serving as the tenth vice president (1841); he was elected to the latter office on the 1840 Whig ticket with President William Henry Harrison. Tyler ascended to the presidency after Harrison's death in April 1841, only a month after the start of the new administration. He was a stalwart supporter and advocate of states' rights, and as president he adopted nationalist policies only when they did not infringe on the powers of the states. His unexpected rise to the presidency, with the resulting threat to the presidential ambitions of Henry Clay and other politicians, left him estranged from both major political parties. Tyler, born to a prominent Virginia family, became a national figure at a time of political upheaval. In the 1820s the nation's only political party, the Democratic-Republicans, split into factions. He was initially a Democrat, but opposed Andrew Jackson during the Nullification Crisis, seeing Jackson's actions as infringing upon states' rights, and criticized Jackson's expansion of executive power during the Bank War. This led Tyler to ally with the Whig Party. Tyler served as a Virginia state legislator, governor, U.S. representative, and U.S. senator. He was put on the 1840 presidential ticket to attract states' rights Southerners to a Whig coalition to defeat Martin Van Buren's re-election bid. With Harrison's death after just one month in office, Tyler became the first vice president to succeed to the presidency without election. He served longer than any president in U.S. history not elected to the office. To forestall constitutional uncertainty, Tyler immediately took the oath of office, moved into the White House, and assumed full presidential powers, a precedent that governed future successions and was codified in the Twenty-fifth Amendment. While Tyler did sign into law some of the Whig-controlled Congress's bills, as a strict constructionist he vetoed the party's bills to create a national bank and raise the tariff rates. Believing that the president should set policy rather than Congress, he sought to bypass the Whig establishment, most notably Kentucky Senator Henry Clay. Most of Tyler's Cabinet resigned soon into his term, and the Whigs, dubbing him His Accidency, expelled him from the party. Tyler was the first president to see his veto of legislation overridden by Congress. Although he faced a stalemate on domestic policy, he had several foreign-policy achievements, including the Webster–Ashburton Treaty with Britain and the Treaty of Wanghia with Qing China. The Republic of Texas separated from Mexico in 1836; Tyler, a firm believer in manifest destiny, saw its annexation as providing an economic advantage to the United States, and worked diligently to make it happen. He initially sought election to a full term as president, but after failing to gain the support of either Whigs or Democrats, he withdrew in support of Democrat James K. Polk, who favored annexation. Polk won the election, and Tyler signed a bill to annex Texas three days before leaving office. Under Polk, the process was completed. When the American Civil War began in 1861, Tyler sided with the Confederacy and won election to the Confederate House of Representatives shortly before his death. Although some have praised Tyler's political resolve, his presidency is generally held in low regard by historians. He is considered an obscure president, with little presence in American cultural memory.

  • Cy Young
    Dec. at 88 (1867-1955)
Denton True "Cy" Young (March 29, 1867 – November 4, 1955) was an American Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher. Born in Gilmore, Ohio, he worked on his family's farm as a youth before starting his professional baseball career. Young entered the major leagues in 1890 with the National League's Cleveland Spiders and pitched for them until 1898. He was then transferred to the St. Louis Cardinals franchise. In 1901, Young jumped to the American League and played for the Boston Red Sox franchise until 1908, helping them win the 1903 World Series. He finished his career with the Cleveland Naps and Boston Rustlers, retiring in 1911. Young was one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the game early in his career. After his speed diminished, he relied more on his control and remained effective into his forties. By the time Young retired, he had established numerous pitching records, some of which have stood for over a century. He holds MLB records for the most career wins, with 511, along with most career innings pitched, games started, and complete games. He led his league in wins during five seasons and pitched three no-hitters, including a perfect game. Young was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937. In 1956, one year after his death, the Cy Young Award was created to honor the best pitcher in Major League Baseball for each season.

  • Bud Cort
    Age: 76
Branded as Hollywood's preeminent manchild after playing misunderstood youths in Robert Altman's "Brewster McCloud" (1971) and Hal Ashby's "Harold and Maude" (1971), Bud Cort found it difficult to find steady work as an actor when the film industry homogenized mid-decade. Sidelined by traumatic injuries suffered in a 1979 automobile accident, the former mentee of Groucho Marx turned to character work at home and abroad. In addition to contributing memorable supporting roles to Amy Jones' "Love Letters" (1983), Andre Konchalovskiy's "Maria's Lovers" (1984) and Tobe Hooper's 1986 remake of the sci-fi classic "Invaders from Mars," Cort was called upon to play the occasional lead in such offbeat projects as "The Secret Diary of Sigmund Freud" (1984) and "Bates Motel" (1987), a pilot for a proposed NBC series based on Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" (1960). More than a decade after his film debut, one of the actor's more prominent film appearances found him shunted out of the frame entirely as the voice for a lovelorn computer pining for cellist Virginia Madsen in the CD-rom-com "Electric Dreams" (1984). Seen later in his career in diverse roles in Michael Mann's "Heat" (1995), Kevin Smith's "Dogma" (1999) and Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" (2004), Cort proved himself to be the unlikeliest of Hollywood survivors and a rare juvenile performer able to transition successfully to mature roles.
