- Don Raye (born Donald MacRae Wilhoite Jr., March 16, 1909 – January 29, 1985) was an American vaudevillian and songwriter, best known for his songs for The Andrews Sisters such as "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar", "The House of Blue Lights", "Just for a Thrill" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." The latter was co-written with Hughie Prince. While known for such wordy novelty numbers, he also wrote the lyrics to "You Don't Know What Love Is," a simple, poetic lament of unusual power. He also composed the song "(That Place) Down the Road a Piece," one of his boogie woogie songs, which has a medium bright boogie tempo. It was written for the Will Bradley Orchestra, who recorded it in 1940, but the song was destined to become a rock and roll standard, recorded by The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Foghat, Amos Milburn, Harry Gibson, and countless others. In 1940 he wrote the lyrics for the patriotic song "This Is My Country". In 1985, Don Raye was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Tim Green joined the band late in 1989 as a guitarist and the band became "Nation of Ulysses." Nation of Ulysses disbanded in the autumn of 1992, having failed to complete their third album. After the breakup, Svenonius, Canty, and Gamboa went on to form the short-lived Cupid Car Club and The Make-Up. The current lineup consists of Ian Svenonius on vocals, Michelle Mae on bass guitar, Alex Minoff on guitar, and Sebastian Thomson on drums. Weird War was initially formed as an umbrella organization in 2001 to encompass disparate anti-authoritarian groups and to "challenge the idiocy of the new epoch." While the current lineup appears on the group's first release I'll Never Forget What's His Name, the group's first full length, self-titled release featured Neil Hagerty and Jessica Espeleta on guitars, and Steve McCarty on drums. These collaborators soon left to pursue other programs, and the band became known as The Scene Creamers, with Ian Svenonius on vocals, Michelle Mae on bass, Alex Minoff on guitar, and Blake Brunner on drums. In this incarnation, the band released I Suck on that Emotion, through Drag City. The Throes
IndieThe Throes is an indie band formed in 1988 in Northern Virginia. The original lineup consisted of singer/guitarist Bill Campbell, percussionist Harry Evans and bassist Joy Gewalt. Friends from the suburbs of Greater Washington, D.C., The Throes released an independent cassette in 1989, The Era of Condolence, featuring seven songs written by Campbell and Evans of "youth, love and unanswered questions." In 1990, The Throes were the first alternative pop band to sign with R.E.X. Records, an indie label based out of New York City and known mostly for its speed and death metal acts. In September 1990, The Throes released All The Flowers Growing In Your Mother's Eyes, which features "a barrage of guitars, vocals and the lyrical musings of Harry Evans". Or, as reviewer J. Edward Keyes says, Flowers "creates moody, dour pop akin to REM and The Smiths" with "sparkling guitar" driven by "idiosyncratic percussion." The original line-up consisted of just Ben Azzara on drums and Gregg Foreman on guitar, harp and vocals. In short succession, friends Sarah Stolfa on Farfisa organ and Kim Thompson of Cupid Car Club on bass guitar, were added. After the release of their first single 'On the Rocks 7"', a joint production of Dischord and Kill Rock Stars records they toured the United States and played regionally around the Northeast. After Ben Azzara left the group for the Capitol City Dusters, they were signed to Touch & Go Records in 1995. The line-up now consisted of Gregg Foreman on guitar, harp and vocals, Jason Kourkounis on drums, Kim Thompson on bass and vocals, and Sarah Stolfa on Farfisa organ. Their first Touch and Go Records release was in 1996 with the Triple Crown 7” and the album The R&B of Membership. Georgie James
Indie, Rock music, Indie rockGeorgie James was an indie pop/rock group from Washington D.C. composed of John Davis and Laura Burhenn. When Q and Not U called it quits in 2005 after releasing three albums, the band split into three different projects: Ris Paul Ric, a folk/electronic solo effort from Chris Richards; Harris Klahr commenced work on his new project, President; and finally, Georgie James, featuring Q And Not U's drummer Davis. Having met through the D.C. music scene, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Davis and vocalist/pianist Burhenn discovered that they had similar tastes in classic pop music from the 1950s to the 1970s. They decided to start working together as a band, Davis writing the guitars, bass and drums, Burhenn on the Rhodes Electric Piano. A few hours later they had written a few songs, and decided it was a worthy project to pursue. Later in 2005, the duo recorded demos at Silver Sonya Studio in Arlington, VA. with producers Chad Clark and TJ Lipple and also at their practice space in NE D.C. The band included Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat with three former members of his brother Alec's band The Faith: guitarist Michael Hampton, drummer Ivor Hanson, and bassist Chris Bald. Hampton and Hanson had also previously played together in S.O.A. The only recording released by the quartet was their self-titled album Embrace being influenced by The Faith EP Subject to Change. Following the breakup of Embrace, MacKaye rejoined former Minor Threat drummer Jeff Nelson to form Egg Hunt. Bald moved on to the band Ignition, and drummer Ivor Hanson paired up with Hampton again in 1992 for Manifesto. Punk rock, Hardcore punkThe Teen Idles were an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in September 1979. Consisting of teenagers Nathan Strejcek, Geordie Grindle, Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, they recorded two demo sessions and the 1980 Minor Disturbance EP before breaking up in November 1980. The influential independent record label Dischord Records was originally created with the sole purpose of releasing The Teen Idles Minor Disturbance 7" record. They were an early landmark in the D.C. hardcore movement, and MacKaye and Nelson would later form the seminal punk rock outfit Minor Threat. The Teen Idles were among the first punk groups from the early 1980s hardcore movement to break out of their regional scene to tour and sell nationally. Inspired by other American punk bands like the Cramps and Bad Brains, the Teen Idles' music was an early version of hardcore punk, and an attempt, in the words of MacKaye, "to get away from a really corrupted music". The group is currently signed to Hardly Art, a label started by Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman in early 2007. Their debut album, The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly was released on September 11, 2007. Their current album, Family, was released by Hardly Art on September 22, 2009. Their song "Morning Song" is featured in BlackBerry commercials released the summer of 2010. Formed in the summer of 1990, the group consisted of vocalist and bassist Christina Billotte, lead guitarist Mary Timony, guitarist Nikki Chapman, and drummer Melissa Berkoff. The group broke up in May 1991, with Timony forming Helium and Billotte forming Slant 6. Timony later participated in several short-lived side-projects, and released solo albums on Lookout! and Matador, before forming Wild Flag in 2010 with ex-members of Sleater-Kinney. Autoclave became known for their intelligent, off-kilter brand of rock, which featured the use of compound and changing meters, thus affiliating them to some extent with the "math rock" movement.- Albums: Autoclave

Punk rockSlant 6 was an all-female punk rock trio based in Washington, D.C. The group consisted of Christina Billotte, Myra Power, and Marge Marshall; it formed in July 1992 following the 1991 breakup of Autoclave, in which Billotte had played. The group took their name from an in-line six-cylinder engine produced in the 1960s and 1970s by the Chrysler Corporation. Slant 6 recorded for the Dischord label and toured the United States several times, and England once. The band makes an appearance in the 1994 cult roadmovie Half-cocked. Alternative rock, Punk rock, Indie rockBeefeater was an American post-hardcore band from late 1984 until 1986. Formed by Tomas Squip, Fred "Freak" Smith, Dug E. Bird and Bruce Atchley Taylor, they were pioneers of the post-hardcore genre and the Revolution Summer which took place in the Washington D.C. hardcore in the mid-'80s with similar bands like Embrace, Rites of Spring and Gray Matter, among others. Their debut LP, Plays for Lovers was released in 1985 on the Dischord and their follow-up House Burning Down was released in 1986, as their farewell LP. Drummers Mark "Two-Chair" Shellhaas and Kenny Craun replaced Taylor on later albums. Squip and Birdzell went on to form Fidelity Jones, while Craun joined the Rhythm Pigs and Fred "Freak" Smith joined Strange Boutique. While Beefeater's songs had all the angry energy of its hardcore labelmates the energy was channelled as much through funk and jazz as rock and roll. Dug E. Bird's fast-paced bass slap drives a rhythm section over which Fred "Not Sonic" Smith's guitar rides in a way reminiscent of the Minutemen.- Albums: Plays For Lovers & House Burning Down, Need a Job, House Burning Down

On Saturday, July 3, 2004, Strange Boutique celebrated a brief reunion in Washington, D.C.
