Deven Verma
Deven Verma, born on 23 October 1937 in Pune, India, was an acclaimed Indian film and television actor. He was best known for his comedic roles in Bollywood cinema, playing pivotal parts in over 80 films throughout his career. Verma's acting prowess was recognized early on when he won the Filmfare Best Comedian Award three times, making him one of the most celebrated comedians in the history of Hindi cinema.
Verma began his acting career in 1961 with the film Dharmputra. However, it was his role in Angoor (1982), directed by Gulzar, that established him as a household name. His performance in the film was lauded for its subtle humor and impeccable comic timing. Not just a performer, Verma also made his mark behind the camera. He produced and directed several films, including the critically acclaimed Besharam (1978). His multifaceted career spanned five decades, wherein he worked with some of the biggest names in Bollywood, including Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, and Shashi Kapoor.
Despite his stardom, Verma was known for his humble disposition and affinity for literature. He was fluent in several languages, including Urdu, Hindi, and English, which further added to the versatility of his performances. Throughout his life, he maintained a strong connection with his roots in Pune, where he passed away on 2 December 2014. Deven Verma's legacy continues to live on through his timeless performances.
