Here if you look off in the distance you can see the then new highway overpass. In the foreground there are some former Rock Island units, the Rock had been gone 4 years by the time of this photo, and the MP 2 years. The track they are sitting on by the fuel tanks and sanding towers no longer exist, as most of the tracks from this era. The Mo-Pac's U23B's had the bad luck of a high percentage involved in wrecks for the number of locos on the system. A number of these units in turn needed cab replacment, and since MoPac had EMD parts readily on hand, the GE units were fitted with the boxier EMD-style crew cabs. Hybrid units, like #4528(now in it's third numbering), would have a look distinct to the MoPac. |

Southbound UP Manifest Train - My First Day Railfanning |

This was taken way back when I was 6 years old. This was the second train picture I ever shot. Back before the SP Merger, UP used to run trains southbound on the Hoxie Sub. to North Little Rock like in the Mo-Pac Days. Poplar Bluff was the crew change point before they moved it to Dexter in 1998 with the start of directional running over the former SP's Cotton Belt. The engineer is just about to deboard and head off to the motel. We had just chased the train over from Ash Hill, back when the track speed was 40, it wasn't hard to beat trains into town, now it is 70, and it is quite difficult at times. This was taken with the Kodak 110 Camera that belonged to my Late Grandma Anna Pumphery, or as I knew her, "Mamaw". |

Northbound UP Manifest Train With CNW 6930 and SSW 9652 |

A lashup made up of Operation Lifesaver CNW 6930 SD40-2 and SSW 9652 GP60 move UP Train MNLPR 23 through the Bluff. CNW 6930 was wrecked a year later and scrapped, sadly. Cotton Belt 9652 lives and soldiers on unpatched. The 6930 would be one of the 5 CNW's I would photograph in revenue service. The sad part is that it rolled over and was destroyed in a UP derailment at Des Plaines, Illinois on 10-21-02 and was later cut up for scrap at Proviso, IL during December 2002. I guess it would rather meet the torch rather than a UP Patch. Thanks to IKE for photo restoration help. |

Here's UP 107, the only B23-7 with an EMD Cab, applied by Mo-Pac after a wreck at Gorham, IL in May 1978 when the unit was only 5 months old. It was used as a local unit in Bluff back in 2002. Sadly, it was retired on April 26, 2005. It became a rebuild core, and was rebuilt into RP20GE Genset UPY 2678 in July 2007, which still rides around on this very frame and trucks. Northbound Manifest With CNW 8706 C44-9W Leading |
| Description: |
Even back when I didn't have to drive 8 hours to see a CNW, it was still nice to see them roll through occasionally. This was one of the last 10 operating CNW C44-9W's on the UP System and one of the last 14 at the time. Almost everything on this one was original, even the numberboards! Now, on 9-17-06, there are just 2 active CNW's, and both Dash-9's, CNW 8646 and 8701. |
