CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-B 4002 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in October, 1956, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4002 was completed by Baldwin in December 1930 as CB&Q class S-4 3009 (c/n 61556). During July 1938 it was shopped at West Burlington, Iowa and upgraded to class S-4-A with the application of a new valve gear frame, Boxpok main drivers, lightweight roller bearing rods and roller bearing trailing truck and tender truck journals, and renumbered to 4002 The tender capacity was increased from 24 to 27 tons by raising the sides of the coal bunker by six inches, enabling the locomotive to run straight through the 1,034 miles from Chicago to Denver without stopping for coal. During 1951 it was shopped again and converted to burn oil by dropping a 7,300 gallon fuel oil bunker into the coal compartment and reclassed as S-4-B. It ran until about 1958, when it was stored at Lincoln. It was finally sold for scrap in 1960, the cab and tender were removed (along with the tender of number 4003), it was drawbar-connected back to back with 4003 (which also had its cab removed), and the two locomotives were moved (without the tenders, which were retained for MOW use) in November 1960 to Northwestern Steel and Wire in Sterling, Illinois and scrapped. |

CB&Q 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 510 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 0-6-0 Class G-5-A 0-6-0 510, main rod removed at Omaha, Nebraska on January 20, 1957, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built by Baldwin during 1921 (c/n 53983). The CB&Q acquired a total of 25 0-6-0's between 1919 and 1921. The first 10 (class G-5, numbers 500 - 509) were built by the Cooke Works of the American Locomotive Company (Alco) in 1919, and an additional 15 (class G-5-A, numbers 510 - 524) were built by Baldwin in 1921. The difference between the G-5 and the G-5-A design was the omission of the steam superheater on the Baldwin built locomotives. Both classes were built to the standard USRA design, and very little was done to change them over their lives. Baker valve gear and cross-compound air compressors were standard on all the Burlington's USRA 0-6-0's. All were retired and scrapped between 1953 and 1955 except for this one, which was sold to the French Lick Hotel in December 1957. |

UP HARVARD CLUB |
Description: |
Built in October 1914 by Pullman in Lot #4292 to Plan #2521A as the 10 section (10S) sleeper-lounge observation PLEASANT HILL, 1 of 20 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped between September and October. 10 cars were built for AT&SF, and 10 for MP, including the PLEASANT HILL. Between November 1933 and November 1936, 9 of the 20 cars were rebuilt to Plan #4025 8 section (8S) sleeper-buffet lounge solarium observations (various suffixes); the PLEASANT HILL was the last car to be rebuilt, in November 1936, to the HARVARD CLUB, originally Plan #4025D, changed to Plan variant #4025Q in February 1944. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, UP acquired 2 of the Lot #4292, Plan #4025 cars: the HARVARD CLUB and the YALE CLUB, which had been rebuilt in September 1936 from the CASA BLANCA (built for AT&SF); the YALE CLUB was also originally Plan #4025D and changed to #4025Q in December 1943. At the divestiture, both cars were leased to Pullman for operation, and both were withdrawn from said lease in late October 1958. Both were subsequently scrapped in circa 1962. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. Photographer is unknown. |

UP RS1m 1270 |
Description: |
UP RS1m 1270 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive began as Bramberger Railroad RS1 570, built in May 1943 and equipped with a steam generator, used primarily to move troop trains to and from Hill Air Force Base in Utah. After the war, the locomotive was rebuilt by EMD, returned to Bramberger in 1951 with an EMD switcher hood and prime mover, retaining the GE electrical gear. In 1959, the UP assumed control of the portion of the Bramberger to Hill AFB and the 570 was sent to Omaha, repainted as UP 1270, and continued working for the UP until it was traded to EMD for new power in 1972. The Alco short hood was retained after the rebuild as was the original GE electrical gear (traction motors), I do not know if the steam generator remained in place. |

MP F3 772 |
Description: |
MP F3 772 at Omaha Nebraska on February 3, 1963, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Sometimes referred to as a F5, this unit was built during September 1948 as MP F3 568 (c/n 5436) was renumbered to 772, retired in 1968 and traded to GE. The F5 designation was the result of this order of locomotives being built as F3's but equipped with improved (D27) traction motors that were used in the F7 production, as well as heavier cables and higher capacity traction motor blowers. It was equipped with a steam generator. |

UP U50 31 |
Description: |
Union Pacific Railroad U50 31 near Omaha, Nebraska on October 26, 1963, Kodachrome by Lou Schmitz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Union Pacific's Chief Mechanical Officer, D. S. Neuhart, came up with the idea to replace as many as ten first generation locomotives (rated at 1500 hp each) with three dual power plant locomotives producing the equivalant 15,000 horsepower. All three builders responded, and GE delivered three U50's in October 1963. This is the first U50 in road number order, and this is likely the first run of number 31. Completed in October 1963 (c/n 34891), placed in service October 26, 1963, it was retired January 1974 and traded back to GE. It rides on trucks and span bolsters from UP's Standard and Veranda gas-turbines, which were taken out of service in 1962. The trucks and span bolsters were reconditioned by the UP at Omaha and shipped to GE, and the turbines carbodies were scrapped. |

UP RS1m 1270 |
Description: |
UP RS1m 1270 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in January 1964, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built in May 1943 (c/n 70820) as a steam generator equipped RS1 by Alco for the Bramberger Railroad, road number 570. The Bramberger was an electric railroad running between Ogden and Salt Lake City, Utah, but required a diesel to move troop trains in and out of Hill Air Force Base, which had no overhead wire. In service on the Bramberger, the 570 was equipped with a trolley pole at each end to activate the Nachod block signals. The War Production Board allocated the RS1 because the Bramberger was built to interurban standards which would not permit a long wheel base steam locomotive. After the war, the RS1, which had seen considerable service, was in need of an overhaul, first performed by Bramberger's shop forces, which lasted about four years before it was in need of a more extensive rebuilding. Julian Bramberger (president) approached EMD about rebuilding the locomotive (he happened to own stock in GM), and EMD agreed to rebuild the RS1, its third rebuilding effort. The 570 returned from EMD in December 1951 with a 1200 horsepwer 567B derated to 1000 horsepower and, of course, an EMD switcher hood on the long end, retaining the Alco short hood. The UP took over the portion of the Bramberger to Hill AFB in 1959 and the 570 was repainted to UP 1270 and based in Omaha. It was traded to EMD in 1972. |
