Congressman Nathan Deal, who was first elected as a Democrat in 1992 but changed Party affiliation to Republican on 10 April 1995, resigned on 21 March 2010. On 1 May 2009 he announced his candidacy for Governor. On 1 March 2010 he announced he would resign from the U.S. House on 8 March 2010 so he could devote his time to his campaign for Governor. However, on 4 March 2010 he declared that he would postpone his resignation (until circa 31 March) so that he can vote against the Democratic health care legislation. Finally, on 21 March 2010, immediately after the Democrats passed the health care bill, he resigned from the U. S. House. Massa (Republican) announced he has Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and will not seek re-election. 5 March 2010: Congressman Massa indicated that he will resign on Monday 8 March 2010 5p EST. The Congressman stated "I can't subject my family and staff to a full investigation ... It would tear us apart" regarding his alleged sexual harassment of a male staffer. 8 March 2010: Congressman Massa, who was first elected in 2008, resigned-- "effective at 5 PM on Monday the 8th of March I will resign my position as the Federal Representative of New York's 29th Congressional District in the 111th Congress.
