Call For Papers

As part of programming inspired by its 2023 exhibition Pursuit and Persistence: 300 Years of Women in Science, the American Philosophical Society is organizing an international conference reflecting on the past, present, and future opportunities for women in science. The conference especially aims to examine this topic from interdisciplinary and global perspectives.

The conference will be held in-person at the Society in Philadelphia on October 5-6, 2023. The conference will also be livestreamed.

The program committee invites paper proposals from scholars in all fields, as well as practitioners, policymakers, educators, and others whose work or experiences bear upon this theme.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Studies of past and present policies that succeeded in creating opportunities for women in science, as well as those that failed

Studies of how institutions and organizations support leadership, mentorship, and training opportunities for women in science

The impact of community-led initiatives for promoting women in STEM at the local, national, and international levels

Past, present, and future opportunities of formal and informal K-12 education for promoting women in science

Strategies for teaching and learning about women in science, especially through storytelling, science communication, and different media platforms

Studies exploring the diversity of opportunities and career pathways for women in science, especially beyond the academy and/or the laboratory

The ways in which women in science have advanced opportunities for political, social, and economic change in the past and present

Opportunities to diversify representation among women in STEM

Applicants should submit a title and a 250-word proposal along with a C.V. by June 12, 2023 via Interfolio: http://apply.interfolio.com/123891

All presenters will receive travel subsidies and hotel accommodations. Presenters may also have the opportunity to publish revised papers in the APS’s Transactions, one of the longest running scholarly journals in America.
