plein air painter - Monhegan Island - the island time forgot...
American Contemporary plein air painter.
The Monhegan Island workshop August 5 - 9 , 2013
If you are still thinking about this workshop, only a few spaces remaining.
About the island...
Be prepared to step back about 60 years in time, to when things were simpler, there was time to appreciate a sunrise or sunset, people took time to smell the roses...again and again.
The island is like nothing you've experienced, if you're a creative person, or would like to find out if you are - you'll experience a calmness, tranquility really, that stills the inner voice to a point where you can again hear the whisper of your soul. If you've already been to the island, you know how elusive it is to put the atmosphere and the state of mind you experience in mere words...
You would be surprised how many people who take this workshop remark that they've been following the notices for a few years and they're so excited to be finally doing it 'this year'.
If you're thinking about it, listen to that whisper and don't miss this opportunity.

plein air painter - Green Drake Gallery, Millheim PA
American Contemporary plein air painter.
J. R. Baldini
is from upstate New York where she studied painting and printmaking
from a very early age at Munson Williams Proctor School of Art, now part
of Pratt.
Having
spent 30 years painting on tiny and exotic islands and the Niagara
Peninsula, she now resides there with well known Canadian photographer
husband Charles Vandersluys and their Silky terrier Bebe Star.
J,
R. is referred by the National Gallery of Canada as the only
Contemporary artist painting Niagara Falls, painting Niagara over and
over for the same reason Monet painted his haystacks, the ever changing
quality of light.
“Painting
en plein air has the capability of transferring internal communication
to the viewer very successfully. A metaphysical immersion happens when
you're drawn to a plein air painting – you're engaged in the atmosphere
the painting was created in, connected to a moment in time,” says
Baldini.
J.
R. founded International Plein Air Painters in 2001, hosting the annual
Great Worldwide Paint Out bringing artists from all over North America
to Niagara to paint, as the Executive Director and a Signature member of
IPAP .
J.
R. is currently showing at the NEW CENTURY ARTISTS Gallery in Manhattan
and the GREEN DRAKE gallery in PA.,as part of the WORLD TOUR OF
CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPE ARTISTS that she has been a founding member of
since 2007. She's been a juror for numerous plein air events and been
published in many art and travel magazines. She has taught workshops in
St. Lucia for eight years, Maine for many more, Niagara Falls, Florida,
SC and new locations including a 'Greek Muse' painting tour of the Greek
Islands in the Fall. J. R. is a Master Photographer, she's been
inducted in the Niagara Falls Arts & Culture Wall of Fame
and is currently writing and illustrating a book on art and psychology
and a children’s book on celebrating what makes us different.

plein air painter - Sarasota Art workshop March 23-24, 2013
American Contemporary plein air painter.
Shells print available HERE
Each day starts with a morning demonstration and lecture
focusing on bold composition with underpainting.
You will learn to make quick decisions and simplify for the most impact.
We will discuss Color relationships, temperature, detail, form and edges
Put the brakes on and learn to 'build the foundation' before you apply the decoration.
Participants should be able to start a second painting for the afternoon session
so it is suggested to work no larger than 12x12. I will be working square.
Supervised painting until 4:30 pm each day
This workshop is focused on making you a faster and better painter,
capturing the essence of the landscape
Workshop is from 10:00 - 4:30 pm
2 day Workshop Cost pp is $297.00 US
Plein Air painting TIP
With plein air painting, I often see artists confused about what to focus on outdoors.
Some truly don't know where to begin painting something in front of them.
What plein air painting is about, is relating
your feelings about the scene, and not about copying nature.
I have seen artists walk around endlessly looking for subject.
A much more dramatic way to paint is to look for 'light'.
Subject is secondary for me. An ordinary object in a wondrous light becomes extraordinary !
And when you have excitement starting your painting, you can more easily carry that through to the finished piece, instead of deciding at the finishing what you can do to make the painting more exciting.
Is your painting missing something but you can't put your finger on it ?
It probably wasn't there to begin with...
Go for the drama ! More info HERE

plein air painter - the experience
American Contemporary plein air painter.
The
artist learns to make decisions and work quickly to engage the changing
light and the experience of the artist is tranferred to the viewer.
www.jrbaldini.com
Plein air painting is a different experience than studio painting.
For the artist and the viewer...
If
the artist works in a studio, they most likely work from photographs,
which involves a process of transferring the 2 dimensional surface of
the photograph to the 2 dimensional surface of the canvas. The artist,
therefore does not transfer the atmosphere and 3rd dimension of the
location, because the artist is not physically experiencing it at the
time the artist is painting it.
The environment engages all of the senses to record the essence of the subject.
and not just a photographic likeness.

plein air painter - Let's all get real...
American Contemporary plein air painter.
We've all been an amateur at something, at some time...
I remember the very first workshop I took. It was a gift for my 25th birthday.
I shouldn't have been surprised, coming from my parents, who sent me to art school at Munson Williams Proctor School of Art before I was 10 years old. I shouldn't have been surprised that they would give me such a gift, since their unspoken message to us always was that we were capable of doing anything we set our mind to. I remember my Dad's exact words growing up, 'you're better than average', this was a reference to his grandfather being a land baron in Austria, but also gave him a sense of pride that his children were born to 'do well'. Still, I was pretty scared to be going away to a workshop where I wouldn't know a soul and I was probably going to be in the midst of everyone in the world who was a better artist than I was.
So, last week, I was thinking about something I've been putting on the back burner for quite a while. I've mentioned before that I was working on a book, right ?
Well, I've compiled pages and files and thoughts, but there was one thing I couldn't get past. Namely, why would anyone be interested in what I had to say - and what made me think that I could do this ?
And then it happened, last weekend in midst of one of our busiest days at the studio, I woke up and said 'I can do this - I have something to say'...and really, I got so excited, it's all I could think about all day.
And you know what starts happening when you focus on something...
There is a Zen saying that applies here: “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” That night I met someone who had just had a book published and offered help if I needed it, and emails started appearing in my mailbox from authors and the list goes on.
Every artist faces fears and negative self talk regarding their creative abilities. These concern lack of knowledge and lack of confidence.
So if you have an obstacle that's stopping you from going for something you want, focus your positive thoughts on it, instead of all reasons you can't do it and
Let's all get real...

And then it happened, last weekend in midst of one of our busiest days at the studio, I woke up and said 'I can do this - I have something to say'...and really, I got so excited, it's all I could think about all day.

plein air painter - a workshop on a tiny island
American Contemporary plein air painter.
Art workshop by the Ocean...
Are you ready to experience the workshop that will change the way you paint ?
Come and join us as we paint on the tiny island of Monhegan, Maine 12 miles out to sea and one of the most charming islands in Penobscot Bay.
There are two workshop offerings this year, a 5 day intensive with J.R. Baldini (Jacq) and clinical psychologist Molly Delaney,Psy.D that will address the visualization and exercise of painting en plein air.
You know how sometimes it takes a day or two after traveling to a location for you to really get into the zone of painting ? Molly's sessions can replicate the mind set of day three of painting as you begin your workshop. This sets the tone for confidence, excitement, visualization and creativity for the workshop.
The second workshop is a two day on August 9-10, 20012,
http://artworkshops.homestead.com/Monhegan_2_day.html
for those who need a refresher or just want to paint with some guidance on this beautiful, visually intense island and their schedule doesn't fit the full week workshop.

Does the Monhegan Workshop whisper to your soul?
J.R. Baldini and Molly Delaney, Psy.D
All levels welcome to participate at your own pace
Transformational workshop allowing your creativity to surface.
http://artworkshops.homestead.com/monheganworkshop.html
Use it to communicate, grow as an artist, handle stress and PAINT !.
If you've ever had the good fortune to spend time on an island in Maine, you know how magical an experience it can be... a place where time seems to stand still and you can hear your inner voice whispering all the possibilities of the day...
I've been painting Monhegan Island since 1974
Picture yourself walking in the footsteps of Homer, Hopper, Kent, Fitzgerald, or Wyeth... literally
Monhegan has no cars !
Then imagine being inspired not only by the beauty of Monhegan island, but also by having the key to unlock your creativity more effectively.
The plein air workshop on Monhegan is designed to help you hone your painting and creativity in ways unmatched by any other workshop.
This workshop is aimed at helping you see with ‘new eyes’ and translate your vision more effectively whether your skill level is advanced or beginner.
Here's your chance to stay and work on the magical, mystical island of Monhegan, long known for creative, spiritual and life altering forces with like minded individuals seeking the essence of oneness and serenity with nature. Experience the ancient romanticism long known to artists, poets, writers and musicians that is Monhegan, the island that time forgot...
Get in touch with your inner creative force in a reality most artists just dream about.
Imagine waking in the morning, looking out your door and everywhere you look is a painting waiting to happen. Paint en plein air in and around Monhegan Island. Classes will concentrate on capturing the light and atmosphere on location. Emphasis on color temperature and grisaille to simplify outdoor painting. All levels accepted.
En plein air, you are immediately challenged to create a strong composition and get it down before the light changes. This gives you a window of approximately twenty five minutes before the lighting pattern begins to change.
Jacqueline believes the painting experience for her, would not be the same without the use of all five senses- to hear the wind and gulls, to smell and taste the sea air and feel the sun or rain- to truly connect to the spirit of the land. Being a plein air painter forces you to stop and "smell the roses".
Monhegan is wonderful for nature walks, hiking, birding, searching for fairy houses, watching performances in a one room schoolhouse, casual conversations with interesting characters, gourmet dinners, golden sun, panoramic views, silky fog, reading a favorite book near the oceans edge or catching some rays and a snooze (multi tasking), meeting a friend over a latte, sharing your day over dinner, and watching scarlet and cherry vanilla sunsets.
And painting....
Class is held around the village and small coves.
There is considerable walking required. Please let us know if you have physical limitations.
The village is small but, there are no cars. The only vehicles on Monhegan are the Hotel trucks used for hauling and luggage. The island is 1/2 mi. wide by 1 1/2 mi. long. with 17 miles of trail.
Demonstrations capturing light patterns using grisalle and composition will be emphasized. Critiques will be held for personal growth. Personal critiques can be arranged for some of your current work. Days are spent painting in and around the island which boasts some of the most beautiful vistas , 600 species of wildflowers, 100 species of birds and at 165 feet, the highest headlands on the East Coast!
The workshop is very relaxed.
Why not treat yourself to a fun, learning holiday?
Be sure to check out the accomodations and student comments and photos page.
If you'd like more info on the island email me your address .
If you are a beginning painter or a studio painter, you are in for a great experience!
The island has two small stores for general merchandise, a library, 3 establishments for dining, 3 walk away food places, a church, a gallery that sells limited art supplies, a one room school house where community events are held, a light house and museum, a few small local craft shops and artist studios.
Should you be extending your stay, there are boats that do tours to other islands.
The island is basically rustic with most homes & cottages using kerosene lamps.
This is a step back in time, the pace is simple and slow and very conducive to creating. Monhegan has been an artist colony for years and the level of art created on and about the island is phenomenal.
Supplies should be kept to a comfortable minimum. A complete list be be mailed upon registration.
You may choose to work in Oil, Acrylic or Pastel.
There is considerable walking involved - appropriate durable footwear is required.
Please inform us if you have physical limitations.
If you do not already have supplies for plein air painting, please check with us before you purchase them.
A painting umbrella is STRONGLY recommended.
On the accomodations page you will find a list of suggestions for lodging. Participants are responsible for their own accomodations - most find the Monhegan House charming. We suggest refundable reservations for any of your travel reservations.
The hotels fill quickly so please call them early. You will also find contacts for the ferry boat.
5 day workshop instruction and creative visualization sessions
classes from 9:00 - 4:00 pm with morning or afternoon demos each day critques are held as time allows
Introductory price at $597.00 pp.
(workshop only - participants are responsible for their own accomodations)
We suggest refundable reservations for any of your travel reservations.

Workshop Title : Problem solving ‘on your feet’ en plein air painting & Creative Visualizations
Description :
5 day working on location workshop to help you achieve drama in your painting. Demo/lecture each morning.
You will learn to ‘bake the cake ‘ before you applying the frosting.
Wonder why your finished painting bears little resemblance to the excitement you felt when starting your painting ?
Students will should have 2 12x12 or smaller canvases to work on per day. Typical work day is 9 - 4pm
Creative Visualizations
Sessions incorporated during the workshop for Creative Visualizations. Re-enforce the body/mind connection and learn how your 'filters' work to your advantage.
Goals : Students at the end of a 5 day workshop will be able to recognize a strong composition and see values using grisaille.
This will enable them to make decisions when doing problem solving on their own, painting on location.
Grisaille studies, directly on canvas will enable students to commit to a composition and value plan instead
of constantly adjusting their values and shadows, commonly known as ‘chasing the light’.
This eliminates the also common fragmented, unfocused painting.
Experience level : Beginner to Advanced
Prerequisite Student Skills: It is suggested that beginners have the experience of at least one drawing course.
Students Supply their own Materials: The workshop is taught using a limited primary color palette. A complete list of suggested oil & acrylic pigments is mailed before the workshop. Canvas board or stretched canvas 12 x 12 or smaller.
A support for canvas and carrying materials. Incidental list also mailed.
A painting umbrella is strongly suggested.

plein air painter - Rockwell Kent and Jamie Wyeth
American Contemporary plein air painter.
Jamie Wyeth’s connection to Monhegan dates to the late 1950s, when he first went there with his father, and he has continued to paint there ever since. His connection to fellow artist Rockwell Kent goes back nearly as far. Early in his career Wyeth bought several pen and ink drawings by Kent used as the sources for his illustrations to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, one of Kent’s most renowned book illustration projects. Subsequently, Wyeth acquired what was Kent’s last home and studio on Monehgan, and then bought several of Kent’s paintings from his first period on the island around 1907. This exhibition will focus on works by the two artists done on Monhegan, and how the scenic island has inspired their work.
The exhibition opening will be celebrated on Friday, May 11, at a members-only preview and reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the museum’s Wyeth Center at the corner of Union Street and Grace Street, in Rockland.
The primary media sponsor for this exhibition is Maine Home + Design. This exhibition is made possible in part thanks to the generous support of: Anonymous, The Crosby Kemper Foundations, Mr. Richard Gilder and Ms. Lois Chiles, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Pyne, John and Anne Surovek, and Mr. and Mrs. George Twigg III.
In association with this exhibition the Farnsworth will present the following lectures and talks: on Saturday, May 12, at 2 p.m., Fertile Ground: Rockwell Kent on Monhegan Island with Scott R. Ferris; on Friday, July 6, at 1 p.m., Gallery Talk with Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky; on Thursday, July 12, at 6 p.m., Wyeth Day Lecture with N.C. Wyeth biographer David Michaelis; on Wednesday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m., Realism and Resonance: George Bellows Paints the Urban Landscape and the Sea, with independent scholar Marianne Doezema; on Friday, August 3, at 1 p.m., Gallery Talk with Farnsworth Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky; on Tuesday, August 14, at 5:30 p.m., A Conversation with Jamie Wyeth and Chief Curator Michael K. Komanecky; on Wednesday, September 5, at 5:30 p.m., Rockwell Kent’s Illustrations for Moby Dick, with Elizabeth Spear, Fellow in Curatorial Practice, Colby College Museum of Art.
The Farnsworth Art Museum celebrates Maine’s ongoing role in American art. It offers a nationally recognized collection of works from many of America’s greatest artists, with 20,000 square feet of gallery space and over 10,000 works in the collection. The Farnsworth has one of the largest public collections of works by sculptor Louise Nevelson, while its Wyeth Center features works of N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth. Two National Register historic sites, the Farnsworth Homestead and the Olson House, and Julia’s Gallery for Young Artists complete the museum complex. April 1st one day only...come with a friend and enjoy a mini holiday in the middle of winter in my studio with a cozy fire and tons of genuine inspiration to fire your creativity !
I often have people stop and watch me paint & most times tell me they wish they could paint or want me to know they could never draw anything but a stick figure. Bet you may have had that happen, too. The myth is, this is what people have been told - the truth is everyone is creative and everyone can use creativity to better their lives.
The "Day in an Artist's Studio" is one of the most different workshops that I offer. I base the workshop on the experience... First, starting with actually working at my studio, then engaging a relaxing, informal atmosphere with a cozy fire in the fireplace, soft inspirational music, a colorful & interesting subject to work from...then add in the opportunity to paint with M. Graham fabulous oil paints and we'll be serving a light lunch & perhaps enjoy a cup or two of gourmet coffee or tea. In this relaxing atmosphere, conducive to creativity, you will also receive the instruction and encouragement to be able to paint your own oil painting, whether or not you've ever picked up a brush before. This workshop is all about the experience and the realization that you can utilize any form of creativity to communicate and reduce stress in your everyday life.
Let me show you, you already have everything you need to be creative.

American Contemporary Plein Air Painter - that time of year
American Contemporary plein air painter.
Welcome to the Niagara Falls Humane Society The Niagara Falls Humane Society helps find loving homes for unwanted and mistreated animals, as well as trying its best to reunite lost pets with their rightful owners. The NFHS provides a safe haven for pets in limbo, before they are placed in a new home. The Society tries to alleviate the suffering of all animals and to eliminate euthanasia as a method of population control for pets. At the NFHS, no healthy adoptable animal will ever be euthanised.

If I can, I do...I don't 'need' more stuff...but a full heart would be nice.
All year long our studio supports the community- Rotary,Project Share,Welland & District Humane Society,Poor Boy, etc., but this time of year, it's more important than ever. In The Northeast, the need accelerates because the cold adds another hurtle for charities. I, myself, can't think of a thing that would mean more to me in the form of a gift. Please consider giving to local charities.
In Niagara - please consider the Niagara Falls Humane Society or maybe Last Chance Horse and Pony Rescue that cares for horses and ponies no longer wanted.
