Tried Hamsticks but the Hustler was quite superior. Ran 40 20 15 and 10, and worked very well all bands. DX on all, although on 40 best I could do was Europe and the Caribbean. The 20M setup was actually a 15M coil with a long stinger. Drew power off the cigarette lighter (yes I know that's a no-no but it worked ok) and the antenna was mounted in a small plate attached to the inner seam of the wheel well and braced with a bracket coming out from the trunk seam. RG58 coax fed out through the rear passenger door. Never a problem with it crushing. And no problems with any kind of RF interference on three different Buick LeSabres, the last a 2003. Good luck with it, mobile HF is a blast. 73 Howie WB2AWQ/7 PS I'm a lefty so I had a Bulldog magnetic paddle sitting on a piece of steel bent over the door handle. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: I am currently not using a Kenwood for HF mobile, but am using an Icom 706 plugged into the cigarette lighter-so running about 40 watts. I don't usually drive to work, and only go mobile on out of town trips, so my setup isn't permanent. For antennas I use MFJ Mini-Hamsticks for 17 and 20 meters. These antennas are 3 feet long, and work fine with a 5 inch mag mount on the roof of the minivan. I run the coax in through one of the rear windows, and use a pair of MFJ mini paddles attached to a jar sitting in the cup holder of our 2007 Town and Country minivan. Don't let the size of the Mini-Hamsticks fool you. I didn't expect too much out of them, but have worked 45 countries or so mobile with them, including Australia, Japan, and Siberia, so some longer paths. The 17m one will cover the entire band with a very good SWR. The 20 meter one is limited to the CW portion of the band unless I use a tuner (rare) or retune it. I also get on the CW county hunters frequency and have no problems running stations. Did even break a pileup for 9Q (Zaire) last year on 17 CW for a new band country, and worked KH5 this year on 17 for a new band country as well. The previous poster was correct-HF mobile is a blast! 73 John AF5CC On Sun, May 1, 2016 at 1:39 PM, howard holden wrote: > Hello Bill, up till I retired 6 years ago on the east coast I ran CW > mobile with a Kenwood TS440S and a Hustler antenna system. No doubt you've received numerous replies by now, but I thought I'd throw in my nickel's worth. I use WinWarbler from DXLabs exclusively for both PSK and RTTY. I use a SignaLink USB and/or a KAM Plus TNC with a Kenwood TS950SDX or Yaesu FT-100D In fact, I use all the programs in the DXLab Suite of programs. They are very comprehensive, interface with each other and best of all, they're totally free. There are many users of the programs on the DXLabs Reflector, willing to assist all new comers to the programs. Take a look at the DXLabs website. Cheers and have fun... The radio looks pristine and seems to be working properly except for an issue with the Receiver. There is no signals audible on any 1 MHz segments from 1 - 14 MHz and 21-30 MHz. All that's heard is low level background hiss, and no CAL signal is audible (or very low level). When I switch to 14 MHz, the audio is strong, and SSB/CW signals on 20M and 17M can be heard, with good movement of S Meter. Starting with 21 MHz (15M), the receiver is dead, with low level hiss only, no CAL signal, or barely audible. I checked all board and connectors and they all appear to be in place. Everything seems to be original with no modifications. I pushed around on the RF and IF boards to see if there was some loose or intermittent connection, but could not get normal audio output to restore with CAL signal on 3.5 or 7 MHz. Transmitter is working 100% - full output on 160-10M, CW and SSB, with normal Moni function. No problem with PLL unlocking or display problems. Ideas where to troubleshoot? I did notice in the Service Manual, under Alignment section of RX, it does note that the 14-20 MHz segment has it's own set of coils on RF unit, and the other segments utilize other sets of coils. Seems strange that only the 14-20 MHz segment would be working, and all MHz segments above and below this segment are essentially dead with only low level background hiss, no, or barely audible CAL signal. I am connecting the signal to the ACC 2 input on the rear of the TS 2000.? I don't know if the audio gain control on the front of the TS 2000 controls the amount of audio to the Signal Link or not. That is what is confusing to me among other things because I don't know if the front audio gain is bypassed or not. Being 78 years old and not very computer literate is really a drawback. My problem is that "this ain't 1958 radio" the year I was licensed. Old dog, new tricks makes old dog confused. I guess I need to hear from? TS 2000 owners using the Signal Link. I think I am going to use FLdigi, if I ever get it downloaded to my Laptop with Windows 7. Although I know nothing at all about the TS-2000, in most cases with which I am familiar, one must 1) turn OFF any speech-processing, and 2) adjust the mic gain very low to keep the ALC reading at least mid-scale or lower. This works with my TS-940 and my Yaesu FT-890.
