Supplement to the Japanese Edition of the August 2024 National Geographic Magazine

Supplement to the Japanese Edition of the August 2024 National Geographic Magazine

As you can see in the upper/left corner of the Cover, there is an advertisement for what appears to be six black-and-white photographs.  These proved to be six postcards bearing photographs by Maynard Owen Williams.  The postcards were sealed in an envelope:

Each photo has a description on the back of the postcard (unfortunately in Japanese).  Each description contains the year the photo was taken (either 1936 or 1946).  Mr. Williams posted articles about Paris in each of those years - "Paris in Spring," October 1936, and "Paris Lives Again," December 1946.  The 1936 article contains thirty B&W photos, none of which match the postcards in this set.  Apparently, none of them made the cut but were, instead, archived.  The two postcards dated 1946, however, are both among the twenty-four photos in that article.  Postcard #1 is from a full-page photo on page 770 entitled "Statues and Children Frame the Eiffel Tower and Its Watery Image."  Postcard #5 is from a full-page photo on page 777 entitled "Lofty Basilica, Humble Bakery, and Winding Street Inspire an Artist in Montmartre."  [Note: the photo on page 770 is credited to Mr. Williams but the photo on page 777 is credited to "Staff Photographer W. Robert Moore."]

The back of the envelope containing this set of postcards bears a photo credited to Mr. Williams and dated 1936.  Again, this image does not appear in the October 1936 issue.

While I have included the images from the postcards and envelope in this discussion, I have also placed them in an album HERE.

Tom, thank-you for bringing this to our attention. I must admit, I am bummed we in the U.S. would not have had this as part of our issues, sigh . . .
