Sunsets
can be sometimes as beautiful as abstract paintings,
displaying subtle nuances, clouds burning in the sunset
rays or deep black trees profiling against the horizon. But
if you have the time to wait one more hour, the twilight is
also a very nice event to picture.
In
temperate countries of mid latitudes (50° N) this
afterglow is the most intense and colorful in winter.
In
Luxembourg, a clear sky, free of any cloud, without either shallow fog at the horizon or contrail in the
sky, occurs once each two months in average.

This
afterglow occurs mainly during the civil twilight, when the Sun is
less than 6° below the horizon. This
phenomenon can last 45 minutes to one hour after the sunset, until
colors vanished in the night. But
even 45 minutes after the sunset, when the sky is very clear, a
long exposure (15 s at 50 ISO) will still reveal the colorful
afterglow.
This
is during the nautical twilight (theoretically extending between
the sunset and the night, but practically when the sun in between
6-12° below the horizon) that bright planets appear and during
the astronomical twilight (when the Sun us between 12-18° below
the horizon) that first stars shine. |

The
time of twilight can also be advantageously used by radio
amateurs. High frequency (HF) shortwaves can take advantage of the
line of the terminator, in this case called the
"gray line" to reach countries located at antipodes.
Indeed, at dusk, when the Earth's shadow approaching, seen hugging
the horizon, and for approximately the next hour, the D and E
layers of the ionosphere are vanishing, gradually replaced by the
F layer, located higher in altitude, at about 150-200 km aloft (90
to 120 mi). The reverse phenomenon occurs at dawn.
Here
are pictures of sunsets, sometimes accompanied with the
most beautiful demonstrations of Mother Nature. These pictures
are published in the frame of "fair use" rules.
