2005 Annular Solar Eclipse

2005 Annular Solar Eclipse
This sequence shows the eclipse just before, during and after annularity.

The path of the 2005 annular solar eclipse of 2005 started in the Atlantic and crossed the Iberian Penibsula before sweeping across the African continent. NASA's 2005 annular eclipse website has detailed predictions and maps of this astronomical event.

I led a small expedition of a dozen people to central Spain via Spears Travel. After several days of sight seeing in and around Madrid, our group drove two hours southeast to the small town of Carrascosa del Campo. Our country side hotel offered an ideal and uncogested observing site for the eclipse.

Eclipse day was perfectly clear and cold with a light breeze. After a quick breakfast, our group set up telescopes around the pool area. The eclipse progressed at a leisurely pace and we were treated with wonderful views of annularity from 8:57 to 9:01 UT. At the end of the partial phases, we packed up and headed back to Madrid for an evening celebration at a neighborhood bistro specializing in local cuisine.

This was the first annular eclipse I photographed using a digital SLR. My primary telescope was a Vixen Vixen 80mm f/8 fluorite refractor (fl=640mm) and AstroPhysics 2x barlow (efl=1287mm, f/16.1). A Nikon D100 digital SLR was used to image the partial phases at one minute intervals while the frequence droped to ten second intervals during annularity.

Below is a selection of photos obtained from Campo, SPAIN. For more 2005 eclipse images, visit both of the photo galleries:

At mid-annularity (08:59 UT) the Sun appears as a perfect ring. Even though 90% of the Sun's surface is blocked by the Moon, it is still much to bright to look at without safe solar filters.
