An assortment of Fred Espenak's photographs of eclipses from 1995 through 1999 are featured on this page. The Moon's shadow took Espenak to such diverse places as India, Mongolia, Aruba and Turkey. In recent years, he has begun to experiment with image enhancement techniques through computer processing. This permits a much more realistic representation of the colar corona's appearance to the naked eye. For more information about image enhancement techniques, see Digital Composites for Solar Eclipses.

Enhanced Image of the 1995 Solar Corona
Six separate photographs were combined with a computer to produce the final image of the 1995 corona. The special processing captures both bright and faint details and closely resembles the corona's appearance seen with the naked eye.(Compare to the previous image which is a conventional photograph.)To learn more about the computer processing technique used to produce this image, see Digital Composites for Solar Eclipses. Composite Photograph of the 1998 Solar Corona
Using a computer, Fred Espenak combined 6 separate photographs to produce the final image of the total solar eclipse of February 26, 1998. The special processing captures both bright and faint details and closely resembles the corona's appearance seen with the naked eye.To learn more about the computer processing technique used to produce this image, see Digital Composites for Solar Eclipses. Classic Diamond Ring - 1998 Feb 26
A brilliant bead of sunlight reappears along the Moon's rim as the total eclipse ends. The Sun's faint corona quickly fades from view during the "diamond ring" effect. And everyone asks "When is the next total eclipse?!" Total Solar Eclipse of 1998 Feb 26 (Oranjestad, ARUBA) |
