At 800 AM MDT...Surface observations indicated sharply colder air
spilling south and east behind a well defined front extending from
northeast Minnesota through the Mississippi Valley and into South
Texas. A surface low with a central pressure of 996 mb, or 29.41
inches of mercury, was identified along the front just northwest
of International Falls, Minnesota. National Weather Service radar
and surface observations showed moderate snow, with embedded heavy
snow bands, falling across eastern and central North Dakota,
northeast South Dakota, and far northwestern Minnesota. Gusty
winds were also observed behind the front across the Plains which
is also causing blowing and drifting snow across the Dakotas this
morning.

The storm is forecast to consolidate farther north over northern
Minnesota and remain quasi-stationary there through Saturday.
Thus, heavy snow will persist across the Northern Plains and Upper
Mississippi Valley on the backside of the storm. Additional snow
accumulations of over a foot is likely across north-central North
Dakota while 6 to 10 inches are expected for parts of northwestern
Minnesota. Blowing snow is also expected with blizzard conditions
possible. Some mixed precipitation is also possible for portions
of the eastern Dakotas and Minnesota along the transition zone
between snow and rain.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 300 PM MDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
