At 300 PM EST...A surface low was located near Houlton, Maine with
a central pressure of 998 mb, or 29.47 inches. A trailing cold
front extended south into the western Atlantic. National Weather
Service radars and surface observations indicated that light to
moderate snow was exiting eastern Maine into New Brunswick,
Canada. Snow showers were reported farther west across portions of
the Great Lakes region, including moderate to heavy snows
producing low visibilities across portions of southwest Lower
Michigan, the eastern Upper Peninsula and western New York. A
second cold front extended southeast from a surface low moving
into western Quebec. This front extended from Upstate New York
back through the Mid Atlantic into the Southeast. Snow showers
were falling along the front in some locations, resulting in snow
squall warnings for portions of eastern New York, New Jersey and
western New England. This cold front has ushered in bitterly cold
wind chills in the 50s and 60s below 0 in eastern parts of the
Northern Plains and throughout the Midwest.

The surface low along the coast will track north across northern
Maine into New Brunswick and eastern Quebec on Wednesday, with
snows ending across much of Maine Wednesday afternoon. However,
snow showers will continue to fall along portions of the second
cold front as it pushes east through the remainder of the
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, producing brief periods of heavy
snowfall and reduced visibilities. As very cold air continues to
move across the Great Lakes, heavy lake effect snow is expected to
continue across potions of the Great Lake region through Thursday.
Additional snowfall accumulations of up to 12 to 18 inches are
possible downwind of the lakes, with areas east of Lake Ontario
expected to see some of the highest totals. Extremely cold wind
chills of 40 to 60 below 0 are expected to remain across the
Midwest and Ohio Valley through Thursday. Record low temperatures
will spread eastward into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast by
Wednesday night and Thursday as well, with wind chills of 10 to 30
degrees below 0.
This will be the last storm summary issued by the Weather
Prediction Center for this event. Please refer to your local
National Weather service office for additional information.
