Storm Summary Message
Storm Summary Number 10 for Major Pacific Coast to High Plains
Storm System
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 PM CST Thu Dec 15 2022
...Winter storm continues tracking through Northern Plains and
Midwest, bringing a wide variety of hazardous weather conditions
from the Northern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic...
Blizzard Warnings are in effect for the northern High Plains.
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect over portions of the northern
High Plains, upper Midwest, the interior Northeast, and New
England.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the
Northern Plains, Upper Midwest, Appalachian Mountains, and
interior Northeast.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 PM CST...A potent (but gradually weakening) 990 mb low
pressure area remains centered over the Upper Midwest this
evening, while a lead coastal low analyzed at 1003 mb over the
Mid-Atlantic is deepening into the main surface low as it tracks
northeast along the coast. Surface observations and Doppler radar
suggest widespread blizzard conditions are ongoing over much of
the Northern Plains, as moderate to heavy snowfall and sustained
winds exceeding 35 mph are noted this evening over the Dakotas,
into northern Nebraska and Minnesota. Meanwhile, east of the Ohio
Valley, surface observations and regional radar mosaic imagery
depict a transition zone from moderate to locally heavy rainfall
and snowfall over the northern Mid-Atlantic, Interior Northeast,
and New England owing to a complex surface pattern with multiple
fronts overhead.

Additional locally moderate to locally heavy snows are anticipated
over the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest through Friday as low
pressure lingers overhead. Blizzard conditions are expected to
persist through at least the morning/early afternoon Friday over
the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest, before winds fall below
blizzard criteria as the aforementioned overhead low weakens.
Meanwhile, mixed precipitation, including additional freezing
rain, should continue over the Interior Northeast/New England
overnight as the coastal low treks toward the Canadian Maritimes.
Heavy snowfall activity with this system should focus over
portions of Upstate New York into Northern New England through
Sunday, where max snowfall totals approaching 2 feet are possible
through the weekend. As a result of multiple days of snow, blowing
snow, and freezing rain across a broad swath of the country,
travel may become dangerous or impossible at times, so be sure to
refer to WPC or your local NWS office to access the latest
forecasts and learn about potential impacts to your area.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
