Storm Summary Number 13 for Coast-to-Coast Winter Storm System
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 AM CST Sat Dec 17 2022
...A swath of wintry weather continues over the Upper Midwest,
Northeast, and New England...
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect over portions of the interior
Northeast and New England.
Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in effect for downwind portions of
Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the upper
Midwest, areas downwind of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior, and
portions of upper New England.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 AM CST...Spotty snow showers and some locally heavy
lake-enhanced snow continue to rotate around a weakening,
vertically-stacked 1000mb low over the upper Midwest. Radar
imagery shows that the heaviest areas of snow are occurring
downwind of the lakes, especially west of Lake Superior and east
of Lake Michigan. Light snow is still falling in regions of the
Plains, with only light accumulations overnight. To the east,
satellite and surface observations indicate a strengthening 989 mb
low pressure system offshore of Massachusetts with strong
upper-level forcing. The heaviest axis of snowfall has shifted to
areas north and east of Boston, especially across southern Maine
and into portions of Quebec. Light to moderate snow, primarily
limited to higher elevation areas, is falling over areas in
upstate New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. In addition, radar
imagery shows heavy, rapidly accumulating lake effect snow
impacting regions downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Scattered snow showers over the northern Plains will continue to
dissipate as the vertically-stacked low pressure system over the
upper Midwest continues to weaken. However, downwind areas of Lake
Michigan and Lake Erie will see heavy lake effect snows through
this weekend as cold west-northwesterly flow continues on the back
side of the coastal low. As the low pulls away toward the Canadian
Maritimes today, heavy snowfall will generally subside from west
to east from the Interior Northeast through New England.
Additional snowfall accumulations of up to 12" (locally 18") are
forecast for portions of southern Maine. Winter Storm Warnings
west of New Hampshire will expire tomorrow morning/afternoon,
while Warning level winter impacts will remain over New Hampshire
and Maine through tomorrow night/Sunday morning. With multiple
days of heavy snow, blowing snow, and mixed precipitation ahead
for the Great Lakes and Northeast, travel may become dangerous or
impossible at times. Be sure to refer to WPC or your local NWS
office to access the latest forecasts and learn about potential
impacts to your area.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
