At 600 PM PST...A potent storm system continued to track eastward
through the Intermountain West, and was analyzed along the
Colorado Rockies range, with a central pressure of 993mb or 29.32
inches of mercury. An occluded boundary extended southward from
the low across southern Colorado, before connecting to a cold
front along the CO/NM border, which was analyzed stretching
southward through central New Mexico. Meanwhile, a frigid arctic
airmass continued to surge south over the Northern Plains and
Intermountain West, with a southward advancing cold front being
analyzed north of the main low, ushering in temperatures 10-20
degrees below average behind the front. Current surface
observations and RADAR depict scattered areas of moderate to heavy
rain and elevation snow over the Intermountain West associated
with the storm system.

Heavy snowfall is expected to continue across the Intermountain
West overnight into Tuesday morning, which could result in
hazardous travel in the terrain. However, the most widespread and
substantial impacts will occur as the system ejects into the
Central Plains on Tuesday as a developing low-pressure center
tracks eastward. This will result in heavy snow and blizzard
conditions across portions of the Central and Northern High Plains
through Wednesday. A rather broad swath of 12"+ of snow is
forecast to fall along an axis extending from southwestern
Nebraska northward through South Dakota, North Dakota, and eastern
Montana, with localized areas potentially receiving over 2 feet of
snow, especially across southern South Dakota. Multiple days of
significant impacts to travel and infrastructure is expected due
to snow, blowing snow, and freezing rain, with travel becoming
impossible at times.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 AM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
