At 800 AM CST...The center of a low pressure system, with its
circulation engulfing much of the eastern half of the country, was
tracking northeastward into southern Illinois with an estimated
central pressure of 987 mb. Recent radar trends and surface
observations indicated that light to moderate snow, locally heavy,
stretched from Oklahoma through the central Plains, across the
Midwest and into the lower Great Lakes. Meanwhile on the warm
side of the system, rain locally heavy, was overspreading much of
the eastern U.S. with severe thunderstorms over portions of the
eastern Gulf states. Very strong and gusty winds associated with
the deep low were also impacting much of the central and southern
Plains as well as the Southeast and into the East Coast.

The deep and expansive low pressure system is forecast to progress
through the eastern half of the country with its center tracking
across the Great Lakes tonight. Moderate to locally heavy snow of
6 to locally 12 inches is forecast to fall on the northwest
periphery of this system from the central Plains through the upper
Midwest into the central Great Lakes. Meanwhile, heavy snow
possibly locally reaching a foot is forecast for tonight over
interior New England before warm air from the south surges up the
Eastern Seaboard and changes the snow to rain on Wednesday. In
addition, strong winds and heavy rain are expected from the Deep
South to the East Coast on the warm side of the system, with a
slight to moderate risk of excessive rainfall rapidly spreading up
the East Coast through tonight. Widespread and potentially
significant river and flash flooding are likely in these regions.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
