Tropical Depression - May 30-June 4,
1963
A low pressure system formed in the western Caribbean sea, crossing
Cuba on May 31st. The system
strengthened as it passed through the western Bahamas, lured northward
by a deep trough along the East
coast of the United States. This non-frontal cyclone continued to
strengthen until it moved inland through
eastern North Carolina and Virginia, dissipating as it drifted westward
through southwest Pennsylvania.
The annual tropical cyclone report for 1963, and the Weekly Weather and
Crop Bulletin, both acknowledged
the system was likely tropical for a portion of its track. The
graphics below show the storm
total rainfall
for the depression. Data was provided by the National Climatic
Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
