As Seen in Victoria Magazine

As a longtime reader of Victoria before I had the privilege of joining the editorial staff, you can imagine my delight at finding some familiar faces in our current issue. Our team has enjoyed bringing fashion features back to the pages of the magazine, and you are certain to love the romantic billows showcased in the May/June story "Lasting Impressions." Christian was out of town when this photo shoot took place last summer, but you will spy Mary Ashley, Emma and Carson on the third spread and then the girls on the following page. A subscriber from Texas reached out to ask if these were my children, so I am wondering if anyone else recognized these cuties?

What a lovely opportunity for my three and our other models! Find the May/June 2020 issue, absolutely brimming with gorgeous content, on newsstands or at victoriamag.com.

Make Beaded Victoria Bookmarks

"The only gift is a portion of thyself." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

This has been a special year for Victoria magazine, as we have marked our 10th anniversary with Hoffman Media. To celebrate this milestone, I wanted to craft a special keepsake for each member of our staff.

I count it a privilege to work with such a talented team of creative women and thought it would be special to commemorate our shared success with a handmade bookmark.

This idea dawned when I found pretty brass and silver shepherd's hook bookmarks at Christmas Village, an annual holiday-shopping festival in Birmingham. Each one had a ring on the end for affixing a charm. Find a similar selection of styles here. Above, a completed bookmark rests on a Sasha Nicholas plate custom-made for the occasion of our 10th anniversary. See more of the celebratory festivities in our November/December issue!

I cut the miniature magazine covers from subscription insert cards and found perfectly sized frames in the jewelry section at Michaels. You could, of course, frame other ephemera or use another type of charm for the focal point. Other supplies for this project include jewelry wire and cutting pliers, crimping beads and crimping pliers, and assorted Swarovski crystal and pearl beads.

To make the bookmark, slip a magazine cover or other ephemera into the frame and adjust the positioning, if needed. Using cutting pliers, cut a length of jewelry wire a couple of inches longer than needed for the strand of beads. Bend the wire at about 1/2 inch, and loop the wire through the ring of the frame. Slide a crimping bead onto the long piece of wire, also catching the loose end; pull taut and crimp the bead. String approximately five decorative beads onto the wire, careful to cover the loose end of wire, and end with a second crimping bead. Loop the wire through the ring on the shepherd's hook, and thread the wire back through the crimping bead and two or three decorative beads. Pull the wire taut, and use cutting pliers to carefully clip remaining wire.

Making these sweet little bookmarks not only offered a delightful evening of crafting but also served as a reminder of how blessed I am to work with talented people to produce a magazine that I have loved for so many years. Here's to the next decade of bliss!

Classic Sewing for the Holidays

"Methinks it is a token of healthy and gentle characteristics, when women of high thoughts and accomplishments love to sew; especially as they are never more at home with their own hearts than while so occupied." ~ Nathaniel Hawthorne

An exciting highlight of the Christmas season has been getting to see Emma on the cover of the Holiday issue of Classic Sewing. A sister to Victoria, Classic Sewing is one of the newer publications at Hoffman Media. This quarterly magazine includes full-size patterns that are certain to delight beginning to experienced sewists. In response to reader requests for styles suitable for the older girl, the editors have offered the sophisticated dress shown above. The elegant neckline, scalloped bodice and softly gathered skirt make this a pattern perfect for special occasions of all kinds. Emma modeled the dress at one of our in-house studios this summer, and we have eagerly awaited its release. Catch her on the newsstand at Barnes & Noble, Joann Fabric and Crafts, or in your favorite specialty sewing store. To purchase the issue online, visit the Classic Sewing store.

Teatime Parties Book Giveaway

"Whatever the occasion that finds you gathering with family and friends, we offer inspiration to make the milestone more meaningful by celebrating it with a tea party." ~ Teatime Parties

One of the benefits of working with Victoria magazine is getting to enjoy the beautiful and inspiring works produced by our sister publications at Hoffman Media. A longtime reader of TeaTime, I am always especially eager to collect the latest book in the magazine's library of tea-themed offerings. The newest volume is especially exciting to me, as one of the parties was photographed at our house earlier this year. Would you like to take a peek?

The "First Tea Party" menu and tablescape were shot at our kitchen table. When I shared the book with my family last night, 13-year-old Mary Ashley was particularly proud to note that her chair is now "famous." I am also pretty pleased that some of my favorite china (shown with the Caroline place card) added a fitting complement to the many pretties brought by the TeaTime stylist. Test-kitchen chef Elizabeth Stringer left several treats for us to enjoy, so I can heartily recommend the recipes in this chapter.

Preview more delightful tea-party themes here, and order your copy of the book here!

For your opportunity to win a copy of this lovely new volume, leave a comment below detailing your favorite occasion to celebrate over tea.

A Cozy Holiday Getaway to Chattanooga

"Of all the months of the year there is not a month one-half so welcome to the young, or so full of happy associations, as the last month of the year ... ." ~ All the Year Round: A Weekly Journal Conducted by Charles Dickens

Earlier this week, the girls and I escaped to beautiful Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a quick trip to celebrate my birthday. This thriving Southern city is about two hours from our home in Birmingham, so getting away for one night was easy. And I had the perfect destination in mind for our stay.

The Chanticleer Inn

I had the pleasure of writing about the Chanticleer Inn for our November/December issue of Victoria. Learning about the history and hospitality of this quaint bed-and-breakfast, I was completely charmed. Located atop scenic Lookout Mountain, it seemed the perfect location from which to explore the Chattanooga Valley.

As expected, a festive welcome awaited us. Innkeeper Audrey Hart and her daughter add seasonal adornments using natural materials foraged from their sprawling property.

The Main Inn features this cozy gathering space with a blazing hearth, freshly baked treats, and a selection of board games. Nestled before the fire, I texted Joe that I felt like I had stepped into a Hallmark Christmas movie.

While they played checkers, Mary Ashley and Emma enjoyed an array of homemade goodies: Oreo cheesecakes, chocolate chip cookies, and apple cider.

Seasonal touches added warmth to the setting.

The Chanticleer offers 17 guest rooms, including three in the Main Inn. Cottages surround the property. We stayed in Room 2 -- one of several options with at least two beds.

Audrey has decorated all of the guest rooms with a French Country style. I felt right at home with this boudoir's lush pink floral fabrics, botanical prints, and antique china plates. After venturing out for the evening, settling into this room was a pampering treat.

In the morning, a bountiful breakfast awaited us in the Main Inn, with seating available on the sun porch, above, and dining room, below.

The girls and I sat at this table. Along with a buffet of fruits, fresh-baked coffee cake, and cereal, we had our choice of farm-fresh eggs or cinnamon roll pancakes, both served with bacon. Unfortunately, we marred the gingham topper with a hot chocolate spill, but Audrey was as gracious as could be in helping an embarrassed Emma feel at ease after the mishap.

As you can see, I couldn't resist this fluffy birthday indulgence! It was absolutely delicious and worth every calorie. During breakfast, I met another guest who is a regular at the Chanticleer and a Victoria subscriber. She had overheard me talking to Audrey and wanted to express her appreciation for the magazine, as well as our Hotels We Love feature. That encounter was the icing on top of a lovely stay!

From the birthday gift of chocolate-dipped Oreos that awaited us in our room to the hearty breakfast served in the morning, we enjoyed every moment at the Chanticleer Inn and look forward to our next visit. If you get the opportunity to get away to this inviting B&B, be sure to tell them that Melissa sent you. Like me, I am sure that you will be dreaming of your next trip to this romantic inn.

Teatime at The English Rose

I always love celebrating my birthday with afternoon tea, so the girls and I timed our arrival to visit The English Rose in downtown Chattanooga. We did not need reservations for our party of three, so this eased the time pressure of needing to follow a strict schedule.

We dined at this authentic British-style venue several years ago as a family, but the girls were so small that they did not remember the trip. Our initial visit was in summertime, so it was nice to return during Yuletide.

Along with Afternoon Tea and a Victorian Tea for 2, The English Rose offers a variety of pub food. Mary Ashley and I opted for teatime, while Emma chose a plate of cheese and crackers -- along with a few tasty morsels from our array of fruits, finger sandwiches and pastries.

Mary Ashley sipped English Breakfast tea, while I sampled a Caramel Pear blend.

The fare was straightforward, with a selection of tea sandwiches: egg salad; cucumber and cream cheese; cheese and tomato; and salmon mousse. Scones on offer included plain, raisin, and gingerbread, and several sweets rounded out the menu. Simple yet tasty!

After a leisurely teatime, the girls and I enjoyed browsing the gift shop. Along with an ornament to commemorate our trip, the girls chose souvenirs and I found a lovely tiered server and tea-themed stationery. If you find yourself in Chattanooga, I would recommend a visit to The English Rose.

Rock City Enchanted Garden of Lights

The Chanticleer Inn sits across the street from Rock City. Although we had explored this natural wonder years ago during the daytime, I was eager to return for the holiday lights display. I must admit, my girls were not too enthused about the idea, but once we stepped inside, they were swept away by the magic of this winter wonderland.

The Enchanted Garden of Lights has been a tradition for more than two decades, with four realms of themed lights and decorations to experience.

I was a bit concerned that possible thunderstorms predicted for the area would mar our plans for outdoor adventure, but the weather turned crisp, cool and clear for the evening. The chill in the air made our outing all the more merry.

Along with the display of lights, festivities include live music, gingerbread decorating, and a host of other holiday activities.

Mary Ashley and Emma wanted to capture every moment of our journey through Rock City.

This location affords stunning views of seven states. As spectacular as the holiday decorations were inside the park, observing the lights of the Chattanooga Valley was just as breathtaking. The girls and I thoroughly enjoyed our quick trip to Tennessee -- less than 24 hours, in fact -- and look forward to exploring more of its many wonders during future excursions!

Just My Cup of TeaTime: Sneak Peek and Giveaway

As a longtime reader of TeaTime, you can imagine my delight when their stylist, Lucy Herndon, asked if they could photograph a summertime menu in our dining room. The shoot took place last August, so I stopped by that afternoon to catch a little of the magic just as the children arrived home from their first day of school. It was so surreal to greet them with dainty treats prepared by the magazine's talented test-kitchen professional, Janet Lambert. Chicken salad croissants, lavender cakes and decadent chocolate macarons -- the after-school snacks of my dreams!

Since last year, we have eagerly awaited the release of the July/August 2016 issue. How exciting it was to discover that the cover image was shot in our home! Although most of the photos showcased in "Lavender & Lace Tea" are tight shots of the food, you can glimpse a little more of our interiors in the opening spread. To my delight, Christian showed me that holding the magazine at just the right angle superimposes the magazine's tablescape over our view of the dining room. Here is a little peek of that feature!

To celebrate this happy occasion, Editor Lorna Reeves has kindly offered a complimentary subscription to Teatime magazine to one tea-loving reader of A Little Loveliness -- to begin with "our" July/August issue. To enter, please leave a comment below!

Emma's Patisserie Tea Party: Bonjour to Au Revoir

"Paris is always a good idea." ~ Audrey Hepburn

Thank you for stopping in to view all the fun from Emma's recent French Patisserie Tea Party. The invitation above from Freshmint Paperie set the tone for her 10th-birthday celebration -- a merry gathering of girlfriends from her classes at school and church.

For a peek at our front porch -- styled to evoke a Parisian terrace -- visit this post.

Step into the dining room here.

View other place settings in this post.

And stop by here for another round of macarons and other tasty treats.

Find more fun and favors here. Before I tell you who won a bundle of Hoffman Media magazines brimming with French inspiration, I must tell you about a special gift Emma received from our friend across the pond, magazine stylist Marie Paule, who often works Victoria.

You can see Emma's excitement in receiving an international package with a birthday postcard and delicate bracelet with a tiny Eiffel Tower charm. Marie Paule wanted her to have this little token she picked up during a perfect day strolling through Montmartre. Isn't that the sweetest surprise? This kind gesture was the icing on the cake -- or perhaps the top macaron on the tower -- for a precious little girl's very special 10th birthday.

Congratulations to tea enthusiast and author Penelope Carlevato on winning the magazines!
Please message me your address, Penelope, and I will send your package.
