Friday Frolics - The Shoe Personality Test

Today is the 12th day of the new lunar year and yes, today is still part of the Spring Festival as celebrated by the Chinese community all over the world.

Spring Festival is celebrated for 15 days, from Day 1 which was on February 8 until the 15th day which will fall on Monday, February 22.

For this Friday Frolics, I have picked one relating to Shoes. Let me tell you something with reference to shoes this time of the year.

Buying shoes during Chinese New Year (any of the 15 days) is a no-no. The Chinese observe some do's and don'ts during this time of the year and buying shoes is one of the don'ts. Some still observe this, yours truly included. It is believed that buying shoes this time of the year will result in a coming year of sighs and challenges. I figured better to be safe than sorry.

And now the quiz..

You Are Clogs

People know that they can truly depend on you.

You should work: At a company dedicated to helping the world

The World of Flip-flops

Flip-flops are the rage these days. Known simply as Japanese slippers here, they used to be in a standard colour scheme of blue and white, flip-flops have made a major comeback here in Malaysia.

The contemporary version comes in a variety of colours too, practically any colour imaginable.

They are so popular that you can find flip-flop stalls operating in shopping malls and complexes. If you come to Malaysia, buy some back to take home for friends and family. Lightweight and useful, they do make great gifts from your travel.

On the other hand, looking to start up your own little stall? Go here for a lead..shopforbags.com for wholesale flip flops - mind-blogging stock at wholesale prices!

Happy flip-flopping!

Fixed favorite loafers make a happy me

Have you ever got a repair done on your shoes?

The other day, I sent a pair of loafers to the local cobbler for some fixing.  I've only worn them for a couple of months and the soles were already giving way, coming off, sort of.  My fault, really.  I only 'discovered' the shoes, still in the box, the other day.  They've been in the closet from last year!  That's the problem when you buy too many pairs of shoes at one time and you sometimes lose track of them. Oops!

Driving with your shoes on also reduces the lifespan of your shoes, believe me.  That's why I drive wearing slippers but I digress.

Here in Malaysia, cobblers still operate in five-foot ways just outside shops as in the picture below.  These cobblers are usually immigrant Indonesians but of late, I've noticed local retired Malay men operating the business.  This professional in the image is parked outside a bank located in a row of shops.  You'll find cobblers at their station from as early as 10 in the morning and they close shop when office-workers finish for the day.  The repair job is normally done the same day.  You send your shoes in the morning and collect them later in the afternoon.  Easy-peasy.

Cobblers like him can be found everywhere in every housing estate as well as in the older parts of the city. However, we do have the more professional cobblers operating in shopping complexes, which I've had the chance to use just once - why pay more when you can get just-as-good or even better service at a better rate from mobile cobblers.

The loafers that I sent needed some gum-work to hold the soles in place.  I don't think epoxy is being used but plain old reliable shoe gum.  The shoes came back not only with soles in place, I noticed there was stitching all around and very well done too.  Good job!  I was one happy customer.   Now, my boots next.

These Boots are Made for Walking..

Now who says cowboy boots are for cowboys only? A visiting colleague from the U.S. just walked into the office with the most rugged-looking pair of cowboy boots, and I know he isn't a cowboy. I don't know, he probably is back home, being from the state of Texas.

I think cowboy boots not only are they good to look at, they will surely provide many years of wear and feet protection. Not sure if they are suitable for our climate though but I have seen people wearing them here and they look great too - both the wearer and the boots. Are you a boots person?

Wait, let's get retro a little with this Nancy Sinatra classic, These Boots Are Made for Walking. Enjoy!

McDonald's staff & Nike's new seamless shoes

Two interesting videos to watch and probably come away with a new insight. They say perception is real but sometimes it can be deceiving you'll see.

By the way, are you (in Malaysia) aware that McValue meals for lunch and buka puasa (breaking fast) come with much reduced prices? These promo prices only apply from noon to 3pm and from 6 to 9pm.

Christian Louboutin

I think not only diamonds are a girl's best friend.  Lots of other stuff are also a girl's best friend too, for example, make-up products, clothes, bags and shoes.  I know most ladies would agree with me.

Talk about shoes, I came across some Christian Louboutin shoes and they are gorgeous!  Love the designs and colors but not sure if I love the prices though.  However, the shoes are on sale right now.    Temptation!  Temptation!      Check them out to see what I mean..

Thinking Out of the (Shoe)Box

Whenever I see black suede shoes, they remind me of a pair of black suede clogs that I used to own. And clogs remind me of a package that arrived at the office for a colleague the other day.

He was surprised to receive it but had no idea as to what it could be so naturally he was excited but apprehensive at the same time being mysterious and all. His elation turned to disappointment when he found out that it was one clog, yes, just one, nevermind if it's a famous brand.

The accompanying note says if he'd like to claim the other clog, he'd have to go downtown personally to sign up for some seminar or something. The clog went into the trashcan. Say, have you heard of Dansko sandals? I hear they are famous for comfort and support.

These Shoes Ain't Made for Walking..

This happened in Singapore at a parking lot. A woman, believed to be in her 20s, was caught on video hitting the private parts of her boyfriend with her high-heeled shoe. Ouch!

A passer-by recorded the 'brutal' act and subsequently uploaded the 31-second clip onto the Internet.

The video clip showed the woman reprimanding her boyfriend with shoe in one hand. She was also seen slapping him with her high-heeled shoe at least four times and subsequently repeatedly attacking him on his private parts with the shoe.

The man tried to ward off the blows with his hands but she continued to attack him by slapping him in the face with the shoe.

Not sure if it's on YouTube but I couldn't find it. I found something else instead - a clip from Malcolm in the Middle, a tv series. Take a look..

Loafers to Give Your Feet a Break

Wearing heels is taxing on one's feet (and backbone), so I decided to fill my shoe-closet with a few more pairs of loafers the other day. I didn't buy just a pair or two. I have a strange habit of getting into a binge when shoe-shopping. To cut a long story short, I bought four pairs. My record is seven pairs of shoes at one go. Yeah, But they stretched for months and gave me a good rotation of shoes. Did you know that your shoes last longer if you give them time to take a break? Shoes need some time-off too.

"What are loafers?" This is a query I received on one of my posts. So as to be able to provide an accurate answer, I checked up an online dictionary and Wikipedia.

Before we go into the word loafer or loafers, let's look at the word 'loaf' and we are not talking about the bread or the meat here.

Loaf means to spend time idly, to pass time at leisure, to lounge around or simply bum about. Taking it real easy. Okay, lepak, if you will in our local lingo.

So, loafers would be shoes that you can just slip on - easy to put on and take off.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say about loafers:

Slip-on shoe
Slip-ons, are low, leather lace-less shoes. The style most commonly seen, known as a loafer in American culture, has a moccasin construction. First appearing in the mid-1930s from Norway, they began as casual shoes, but have increased in popularity to point of being worn in America with city lounge suits, though these still require lace-up shoes in more conservative locations such as Britain. They are worn in many situations in a wide variety of colours and designs, often featuring tassels on the front, or metal decorations (the 'Gucci' loafer).

So, do you wear loafers?

Btw, how do you break in a new pair of loafers or shoes for that matter. An old Chinese belief always works for me. You may scoff at the idea but it really works. You may want to try it.

Before we start wearing a brand new pair of shoes, we'd first give them a little nibble (both shoes). It's actually symbolically indicating that we'd bite the shoes so that they can't bite us. Yeah, laughable but it's worth a try nevertheless.

A company called Zappos

How is your office like? Are you surrounded by spaciousness and lush greenery or squeezed in between racks of files and other knick-knacks? Does your office have a popcorn machine or a dance machine in the lobby..

Or an Elvis in the office..

How about a lineup of shoes..

Or your favourite rubber duckies..

Large bowls of snacks..

Or a workstation of your favourite things..

Or your CEO in a cube with a nametag that looks as creative as this..

Hard to imagine all these, isn't it? But not so for employees of this company..

For more pictures, go here..

A little about Zappos.com, from Wikipedia...
"Zappos.com is an electronic commerce company specializing in footwear and is currently based in Henderson, Nevada, USA. The company warehouse is located in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, along with an outlet store. In addition, Zappos has two outlet stores in Las Vegas, Nevada and Henderson, Nevada.

Since its founding in 1999, Zappos has grown to be the biggest online shoe store. Zappos did "almost nothing" in sales for 1999, but grossed over $800 million in merchandise sales in 2007, and is projecting over $1 billion in 2008."

I read that they hit the $1 billion mark on Cyber Monday, Dec 1. Employees gathered at a bar around a laptop showing sales for the day minute-by-minute, like New Year's. That was also a Zappos record day in gross sales.

The name Zappos is derived from the Spanish word zapatos, meaning shoes.

If you have a say at designing or restructuring your office, how would you like your office to be or to have?

Nike Shoes, Louis Vuitton Bags at Ridiculous Prices

Thinking about getting a pair of sports shoes? I found this site that has discounts as much as 54% off! No kidding. Kickstime.com has stocks for Nike Air Jordans I-XX2, Air Dunks, Air Force 1's, Bapes, LRG, BBC & Bape Hoodies. They also have Red Monkey Jeans, Coach Handbags, Chanel sun glasses, New Era fitted caps and much much more, all at ridiculously low prices, and with free shipping too!

Most online shops do not provide a number where you can reach them but this shop does. It has a toll-free number where you can call in 7 hours, 5 days a week to make an enquiry or place an order. You'll get to speak to a knowledgable, polite representative. They charge no shipping & handling, no tax, no hidden fees. What you see is what you pay.

The Crazy Summer Sale is on. To give you an idea of how low their prices are, a pair of Nike Air Jordan is going for only $79.95 vs the usual price of $175.00. And their Louis Vuitton bags are going for also $79.95 each vs the usual price of $650.00. That's a huge 88% discount!

If you'll excuse me, I gotta go spread the news.
