Happy Place = Happy Valley Shop

My current happy place is Happy Valley Shop on Smith St. I love it not just because they are my most recent stockist, and not just because a dear friend works there, but because it is so darn deluxe!

A lot of stores these days are too pretty, too visually busy, too colourful (never thought I would say that!), too girly, but Happy Valley Shop is the antidote to all of that. Best book selection, great mags, well considered gifts for guys and gals, it's a beautiful big space which is peaceful and airy, and always makes my savings card a little less full!

Happy Valley Shop are stocking my leather cases and luggage tags.

Edition X

I'm very excited to have my work included in the amazing collection at Edition X. Housed at Pieces of Eight, at 28 Russell Place, Melbourne, Edition X focuses on presenting the 'affordable collectable'.

'Edition X is unique, bringing you completely exclusive commissioned works from a variety of artists and makers from around the globe with all collections made in very limited set editions.
The works range from jewellery, textiles and books to sculpture and works on paper.'

The Pinwheel earrings are available in three colourways, pictured above, and are a limited edition of three in each colour.

Making like a mofo

Sampling some new things. Playing with old designs/materials and reinventing them. I will never get tired of circles!
Sending samples of new things off to magazines in the hope of some press.

Every night I am at the kitchen table making work by incandescent light. Not my favourite, I prefer daylight, but I need to make the best use of my kid-free time. Here are some pinwheels on the go...
...and here they are finished. They've found new homes at Craft Vic, Five Boroughs and Klopper.

Thanks for the feedback regarding my previous post, I know it often appears that other people have it all, when we are probably all a bit guilty of painting the best possible picture of our lives, despite the mess and chaos.

We are battling coughs and colds brought home from daycare, interrupted nights with the small girl, last night we struck a deal that she would spend all night in her bed, lo and behold it worked!

I've got a few new projects on the boil which are very exciting, I'm also in full production for my little Christmas range, and I'm doing the Finders Keepers in early Oct, so it is full steam ahead!

Bag of tricks

I packed my freemason's case ($4 at the opshop) to head off and play show and tell with a potential stockist.
When I got home my case looked like this, and I can happily say that my Pinwheel Flower Brooches and Postal Luggage Tags can now be found at Five Boroughs in East Brunswick!

Heide Store

Announcing that Postage Belts can now be found at Heide Museum Store out in Bulleen.

What a great place to visit, we have just returned from a jaunt there, managed to see the last day of the Cubism show and had a posh lunch at Café Vue.

I waddled around the gardens but really just wanted to head home, this Little Miss is doing some strange bulging and I feel the need not to travel far from home. Will keep you posted.

Ensemble

Here's a lovely lass in the window of Cottage Industry, modelling an astoundingly beautiful ensemble, including a belt of mine featuring 1960's Queen Liz stamps. I wish it was a maternity outfit, but alas, I'll have to dream for now.....

What I really wanted to say was 'yeehar' for retailers who merchandise things well. I have been vexed by this issue over the years, as some of my stock is in stores on consignment. It has been frustrating to see my wares gather dust on the same old shelf, forgotten about, expected to sell themselves from such a disadvantaged position.

Even on consignment, stock should be displayed to both its best advantage, and the store's; after all if it sells, both parties make money, right? I understand that consignment often has advantages, and that not all retailers are in the position to buy stock outright.

Some retailers run purely on consignment, such as Craft Vic, and I am proud to stock with them as I know that the displays are changed weekly, in fact over Xmas I know that Craft Vic were changing displays daily. It all helps, aren't we meant to have short attention spans? Oh look, the shop has been rearranged, hey I never noticed that doodad last time I was here!

Good merchandising is a must for any store, and when I see it done well, particularly using my wares, I am whooping it up in the street! Gold star to you Pene, you made my week!

Daisy Chain

I have been a demographers' puzzle lately, sitting on the couch crocheting rather pretty things whilst watching The Wire. Well I'm breaking up the intense viewing with a bit of 30 Rock Season Three, which is so damn funny, but anyway, my inner girliness is embodied in these new necklaces.

They are currently residing at etsy HQ and Craft Victoria, among many other fine items of handmade splendour. Seriously folks, if you're in Melbourne, a visit to 31 Flinders Lane is a must.

Corky Saint Clair

Not only is Corky Saint Clair a great character from Waiting for Guffman, but also a much beloved Melbourne store in the Degraves subway arcade. We recently dropped off a number of Mini and Double fringed military brooches to Corky, adding to the deliciously fabulous range of jewellery, accessories and gifts. You know when you walk into a shop and feel instantly at home? That's the mood we get at Corky HQ.

Leo and I love to visit, because there is a cupcake shop nearby, a Sole Devotion shop selling John Fluevog and Trippen shoes (drool), and we love the baguette shop too. Plus the pink tiles in the stairwell and arcade are so retro, a detail from old Melbourne town that remains, let's hope for many more years.

You cain't always get what you want

Well you can get what you want, if they are of the leather Xmas decoration category, at Meet me at Mike's and Craft Vic.

Michi was spruiking my wares in spirit, but sent out Monday's forecast on Tuesday aswell, hence my in-the-archives-but-not-seen-by-7000+ subscribers version.

Oh well, Michi have been good to me this year, may they all have some R&R over Xmas.

PS. The photo is taken at Craft Vic, not Mike's

Visit Mike's

These beauties are playing sleep-overs at Meet me at Mike's, in the hope that they will be gazed at adoringly and purchased for a beloved friend/ partner/self for Xmas.

Numero uno is a slightly patent grey, featuring the native Yellow Tailed Thornbill.

Second is the very popular whimsical woodland theme, on full grain chocolate brown,

and finally my favourite, patent red with a mish mash of pink, blue and purple stamps. I was thinking of keeping this one, but I have too many already (8 and counting).

On My Desk

The desk I have mainly used in the past few days is the computer table in the house.
I've been madly finishing an application for Artisan's Cherish Showcase, which will at their retail space (m)art in Brisbane in the lead up to Christmas.
So I've been finessing the CV, writing Artist's Statements, taking up-to-date photos, including this one, of my Dahlia Brooches.
They are made from crocheted leather thonging, and are so robust that I can only make about three at a time, I get a bit of RSI in the ol' wrist!

Queenie with Bling

These shiny gems are now at Craft Vic, and also Meet me at Mike's. I'm a bit of a multicolour addict, so they come in a huge range of colours, some metallic for extra shine.
I was thinking of doing a King shaped crown, ie a bit spiky, it's on the never ending list of things-to-do!

Adelaide Days Part 2: My afternoon in Croydon

When I still lived in Adelaide Croydon was an average suburb not far from the city, on the flatlands, with a lot of great big, cheap, old houses. I wouldn't have considered it a shopping destination at all.

All that has changed, and I found myself in heaven as I strolled along two modest blocks lining either side of Elizabeth St. My shoemaking connections had let me know of another apron-wearer and hammer-wielder, Kelly, who has set up shop in Croydon. Her place is called Clubhouse Lane Boutique, and stocks a mix of vintage and new, clothing, accessories and, of course, shoes.

Had a great time playing show and tell with Kelly, and now Emerge wares are residing in her shop! Great stuff indeed.

I was also told to visit Hype and Seek, across the street, and spent a long time browsing all their amazing finds. Genevieve and Dexter call their place a vintage/retro store, with all the requisite furniture, lamps, objects, clothing, bags ( a selection pictured below), home wares - you name it, these guys have found it, collected it, and are now sharing the goodies!
I had a chat to Genevieve about my 'thing' for old-school tracksuits and parkas, sadly my collection has now dwindled to a few trusty faves.

There are more great establishments along Elizabeth St; One Small Room, Nest Studio, a fine looking florist sporting a bit of Kale, a great cafe, and the boy loved the playground near the train line!

(Muchos gracias to Leah for recommending this adventure to Croydon.)

Adelaide Days Part 1: Irving Baby

The boy and I went to visit my hometown of Adelaide, and after being away for 10 years now it felt like a parallel universe.

While we were there, our list of things-to-do included finding lovely homes for my recent range of Key Rings pictured a few posts back. The first of these lovely homes is Irving Baby, a shop that has been around for quite a while now. It's a visual and tactile feast of vintage and new; clothes, accessories and objects, custom wallpaper, fabulous natural light and music. Trenna and Briar, proprietors extrordinaire, have a second city store, so the more the merrier!
(They were also featured in Frankie issue 23, which is where the above photo is from.)
